Steele...Remington Steele Posted by David Lambert 1/13/2004 Fox Home Video's main man for DVD development, Sr. VP Peter Staddon, was generous enough to spend more than 2 hours last night at an online chat, sponsored and hosted by the wonderful staff over at The Home Theater Forum. He was asked a LOT of TV-on-DVD questions, and tonight I hope to bring you the complete wrap-up.
One of TVShowsOnDVD's very own readers, Jessica, started off the chat by asking Mr. Staddon about Pierce Brosnan's "Bond-inspiring" role in Remington Steele. This is a show that Fox owns by way of their aquisition quite some time back of the MTM properties, which include The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Newhart, among others.
Staddon replied that "One of the guys in the office has been pestering us for six months straight to release (Remington)", indicating that the show had support from "inside" (even if we don't know the person's position).
Jessica and I were both pleased by the rest of the answer, which was that Remington Steele WILL be released, and that the timeframe is "probably later this year".
As the 007 franchise seems to be nearing the end of the Pierce Brosnan era, it will be great to finally get onto DVD the show out which first inspired, then delayed Brosnan's stint as the ultimate secret agent. Stay tuned, and we will let you know the details, as soon as Fox wraps up their planning for this long-awaited set.

Thanks Piper! And here's the link to the transcript of the chat held by the site Home Theater Forum: www.hometheaterforum.com/files/fox2004.txt<RonEpstein> At this time I'd like to introduce Peter Staddon from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Peter, many people know your name but may not know exactly what you do at Fox Entertainment. Perhaps you can better explain your job title. <peterstaddon> Sure, I'm a senior vice president of marketing. I also oversee the development of all dvd product. I have a great job and get paid for looking at movies!! Ready for the questions, always a pleasure to chat with the HTF. <RonEpstein> Let's open the floor to questions. <Jessica> Hello - thanks for taking time to talk with us. I was wondering if there are any plans to release Remingtont Steele to DVD, now that Pierce Brosnan is Bond. <peterstaddon> One of the guys in the office has been pestering us for six months straight to release Remmington, and we will be releasing it probably later this year. I hope you'll like it when we are done. Richard didn't put you up to that question did he ==================================== Figures I just got about the last complete epsode I needed on tape. ;D Ace

Yee-ha! Do you suppose it's true? Gee, if I can come up with however much they want to charge for it, I might finally, actually learn the names of the episodes! Sobering thought, isn't it? ;D

Oh it's true, the man is legitimate and a VP at FOX and does these chats from time to time with Home Theater Forum (probably the largest DVD site on the web). Hopefully they'll come out in yearly sets and not 2 at a time or some best of package.
Considering that 10 years ago Columbia was charging $20 for 2 episodes per tape even the most expensive yearly DVD packages would now be cheaper.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that Sam's Club will have them, where I've been able to get the few TV series seasons I own for prices ranging from $26 to $38.

This would be great news. Now if they'd issue ALL episodes, we'd be in seventh heaven. (Is there are 4th, 5th and 6th heaven?) Perhaps we could write to these people requesting RS on DVD. Does anyone have the address? We have the names. mg

Hi MG! Welcome back again. I do believe the plan will be to release the DVD's on a season by season basis, that's how FOX has done the overwhelming majority of their series. If they stop after season 1 or 2 or 3 it will only be because they don't sell well enough. Ace

Found this on another board about begging for DVDs of TV series:
Many a show has been saved and put into DVD due to the fans. I have three great examples for you. 1) La Femme Nikita - this show was on the verge of cancellation and they were NOT going to put out a DVD. The fans got together and put out an ad in "Daily Variety" and "Variety" which are 2 of the biggest trade ads in the media business. The ads read that they did NOT and would Not accept a cancellation of their favorite show and give us a DVD now. Executives caved in and not only did the show have a 4 and final season. They also put out a complete season one DVD that went through the roof. 2) Roswell - this show was kept on the air with similar techniques such as emails and ads in the same papers. They also kept sending "empty tabasco bottles" to the producer of the shows office. The characters had a thing for Tabasco. It worked. The show was kept on the air and the DVD and soundtrack were put out this year. 3) Angel - Ads have been run in Variety the past two weeks stating the fans will go to hell and back with Angel just to keep him alive. The power and persistance of fans and some creative tactics could get them whatever they want. The power of the public is a lot stronger than we think.

What's the latest on this? Anybody heard anything recently? Seems like the opening of LOA would have been a good tie-in. PB has even made a link to RS in some of his LOA interviews regarding similarities to romantic comedy.

Last week I checked the TV Shows on DVD site and there have been no further articles or news items released since the first in Jan. But the release is said to be at the end of the year ("probably") and that's 1/2 a year away so it's probably too early for news.
If LOA opened bigger in the U.S. than it did there would be more immediate impetus for an RS tie-in. We'll see how the DVD sales and rentals go for it (probably much better than in the theaters since it skews older and romantic comedies usually do very well).

A friend of mine is on the A&E mailing list, and evidently A&E will be the ones to release the DVDs. No date, as of yet, has been given.

Urgh NOT good news. A&E complete season sets for 1 hour shows are usually about twice as much as the FOX ones. $70-100 vs $30-50. Multiply that difference by 4 years and then scream! If A&E is releasing them I'll probably be waiting and buying them when the price goes down as it usually does before the next "year set" comes out. Ace

Boo! Hiss! A pox on A&E! (Do you think they'll still be cheaper at Sam's Club?) cg

I'm sure there will be sales, but let's face it a sale on a $100 set is still more expensive than a non sale on $35 one. Ace

That's really mean! And not wise of them considering that some people might not be willing to buy/able to afford a set at this price.

Ace I don't know about "sales," as such, I just know that Sam's Club typically has fairly good prices on TV series DVD's, although of course you're right, it won't help much if the starting price is double (or worse) to begin with. cg

I guess they price the sets really hight because they know the die-hards will pay it, then they lower it later when they want to sell to a broader audience. And fi the price is 2-3 times as high they don't care if they lose 50% of possible sales because they'll make more this way. *Sigh* Expensive as it is it's still cheaper than the Columbia tapes which went for $20 per 2 episodes, 10 years ago! But with so many other series selling for so much less than A&E sells them it's still a bitter pill to swallow. Ace

Think there's a possibility that they'll go for a reasonable market price rather than a price gouge? cg
