Found this review on Tumblr ... www.johnsherrod.net/post/96319054696/review-the-november-manWarning! Massive spoilers ahead. Read at your own risk! I’ve always been a massive James Bond fan. Growing up, Roger Moore was Bond to me. We taped almost all of the Moore Bond films when they came on TV and watched them over and over again. GoldenEye was the first Bond movie I saw on the big screen, and it’s actually been my favorite Bond film ever since. That said, Pierce Brosnan is not my favorite Bond. In fact, I’d probably put him fourth or fifth out of six if I were ranking all the Bonds. Weirdly though, I really love him in GoldenEye, and then didn’t like him much after that. It didn’t help that most of his Bond movies weren’t great, but he also changed his style a little bit after his inaugural Bond film. In GoldenEye he was hard and detached, though not quite to the level Daniel Craig has taken the character. After GoldenEye he played up his sensitive side in a smarmy 90’s sort of way that never really resonated with me. That said, because of GoldenEye the movie, and GoldenEye the video game which I spend countless hours playing as a teen, I was actually really excited to see him return to the over-the-top spy action genre when I first saw the trailer for The November Man. I knew the audience would skew older for this film. After all, if you’re a teenager now you probably have no idea who played Bond before Daniel Craig, assuming you care of the Bond series at all. I was a little surprised at just how old the audience was in the theater I went to in Smyrna, Tennessee. With few exceptions I was easily the youngest person in the room by at least fifteen years and in some cases probably more than double that. I was legitimately worried that I had somehow walked into the theater for The Hundred-Foot Journey by mistake. I was in this for one reason: to see a former James Bond do his thing again. That was all the movie had to do to work for me, and in that respect it lived up to my expectations. Brosnan was terrific as Peter Devereaux, a former CIA agent enjoying retirement who is dragged back into the fray and winds up having to protect Olga Kurylenko’s character, Alice. Kurylenko basically plays the same character she always plays. It’s worth noting that Kurylenko played the main Bond girl in the largely forgettable (and writers strike affected) Quantum Of Solace. Meanwhile he’s being pursued by CIA agent David Mason (Luke Bracey). The movie has a lot of well-worn spy movie tropes. The damsel in distress, an over-the-top monster of a bad guy, the mentor being pursued by his protege. Brosnan plays the role as much tougher than he did in most of his Bond films and he even trains his protege not to get involved with women because of the potential for getting in the way of the mission. The big misstep the filmmakers made, in my opinion, was making this a hard-R film. The film includes gory gunshot wounds, foul language, and gratuitous nudity. While I’m not a fan of those things in any movie, it really seemed inappropriate here. Rightly or wrongly, I perceive Pierce Brosnan to be a PG-13 action star, and it was clear that the old people in attendance with me were quite unprepared for the hard-R content. Also, in an era where you’re writing off millions of dollars in box office returns by not getting a PG-13 rating, I’m not sure what they thought they were getting in return for putting that content in the film. The film executes well on the well-worn spy movie cliches, but doesn’t rise above them. It’s entertaining, but isn’t worth paying to see unless, like me, you just really want to see Pierce Brosnan return to the type of role that made him a movie star.

I've been monitoring Pierce chatter on the twitter feed this weekend, and other than people retweeting reviews by actual critics, the comments on November Man have been very positive. Most individuals who are tweeting about it seem to love it and are recommending it or sending Pierce kuddos on it.
I saw where it was 5th in the weekend opening box office. But my question, for anyone who knows these things, is when they post these rankings do they take into account how many theaters a movie is actually playing in? For example ... if Guardians of the Galaxy is playing in 4000 theaters and November Man is playing in 2500 theaters, is that taken into account? (BTW, I made those numbers up - I have no clue how many theaters each movie is in).

(BTW, I made those numbers up - I have no clue how many theaters each movie is in). It's ranked by total gross. The per screen avg (which is really per theater since bigger movies will have multiple screens per theater) doesn't factor into it. The film has pretty much done what Relativity predicted and tracked what it would do over the 6 days early last week when they announced a sequel, maybe 1/2m less. Depending on legs it should make in the US anywhere from $20-25m. According to the LA Times it was made for a very inexpensive $15m for this kind of film (my guess is Pierce gets paid on the back end) and Relativity paid just $3m for the U.S, rights though far more for marketing. A sequel will depend on legs and Int'l numbers though Relativity has already pre-crunched estimated numbers, as well as VOD, TV, DVD etc if they're saying the want to produce the next one and not just distribute it in the U.S.. But lots of sequels are green-lit w/o happening so we'll wait an see.
