But then, come to think of it - she has something common with Bond - the longevity of their marriages. Now, now, is it really fair to put Bond's marriage into the same category as Britney's, considering his was drastically shortened by death? (P.S. That was Bond's only marriage wasn't it? -- I'm not a Bond afficiando -- I'll admit I only watch them cause of Pierce. ) migs

Yes, it was his only marriage. And as tragic as it was, both his and Britney's marriages were plot devices, so I think it's fair co compare them. I thought about it before posting and my healthy sense of black humor told me I could hit the "Post" button.

From another board; no URL was specified. Despite the last paragraph (they all say it anyway) it seemed more apropriate to post it in this thread.
Bond 21 Director Chosen? And he's Eyed Bond before.
February 26, 2004 - According to Moviehole, GoldenEye director Martin Campbell may return to helm the untitled 21st installment of the James Bond film series. A scooper for Moviehole advised them that "Campbell has been tipped, though his commitment to Zorro 2 would clash with the Bond schedule." But schedules can lways be juggled.
The site adds that the script for Bond 21 hasn't even been written yet so Zorro 2, which films this spring, could be done by the time 007 is ready to shoot.
Martin Campbell's other credits include Beyond Borders and Vertical Limit.
Moviehole also mentions a recent appearance made by Scottish thesp (and rumored Pierce Brosnan replacement) Dougray Scott on the BBC's Breakfast show wherein the M:I-2 villain was coy about slipping into 007's tux in the future. The actor apparently acknowledged he'd be interested in the role ... should Eon Productions approach him for it.

Things that make you go hmmm...
Pierce Brosnan is not exactly quelling rumors that he won't return as 007 in the next James Bond adventure. During the recent Oscar festivities, Brosnan told Variety that the chances of his reprising the British spy in the franchise's 21st film were "opaque."

;D;D;D Btw, here's the source to what Piper posted: Pierce Brosnan Says His 007 Future is OpaqueSource: Variety Sunday, February 29, 2004 Variety chatted with one of the many superstars at the Oscars Night Before party, Pierce Brosnan, who noted he'd completed four films in a row. As for whether he'll be back for another outing as James Bond, Brosnan said that commitment was "opaque." It appears the rumors from a few weeks ago, that said his participation in James Bond 21 was iffy, weren't that far off after all. We'll keep you updated as soon as we hear more about the next 007 film.

Empire: Male Bonding007 screenwriters speak09 March 2004 History is littered with great partnerships – Bonnie & Clyde, Butch & Sundance, Robert Wade & Neal Purvis. OK, so you may not be familiar with that last pair, but they’re the talents behind The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day, as well as the upcoming Bond 21. We caught up with them at the Orange Screenwriters Seminar at the British Library in London last night to ask how you write for Bond. “We started writing the new one two weeks ago – so obviously all the cliches are already in place,” says Neal. “As far as we understand it, Pierce Brosnan is Bond. He’s a great Bond and he gives you a lot to work with as a writer because he’s very good looking. Seriously, he is very good at suggesting an undercurrent of – you don’t know what. He shows that there is a shadow on this man.” “I don’t think there’s a more difficult task,” says Rob, of writing Bond. “It’s all been done. The twentieth film was harder than the nineteenth. It’s very difficult to think of new ways to blow things up! But character is the thing; it’s finding new ways to explore the character.” So how about the once-rumoured Jinx movie? “We spent two months with Stephen Frears on it and it’s all down to the studio. Halle Berry was very happy, Stephen and the producers were happy and we were happy – but the studio didn’t want to make it. It was going to cost $80-90 million and Charlie’s Angels and Tomb Raider hadn’t done well, so they didn’t want to risk it,” says Neal. They also showed the audience a clip from their film which has just finished shooting, called Return To Sender. It tells the story of a man who writes to prisoners on death row, befriends them and then sells their last letters to the press. “The name will probably be changed. We wrote it fourteen years ago when we were researching Let Him Have It and it finished shooting on Saturday. The whole budget was less than the pre-title sequence on Tomorrow Never Dies.” ===================================== The scripted started 2 weeks ago? What's the hurry? Sheesh... and all that wasted time doing Jinx and for that film they got Stephen Frears to direct? No wonder there's no contract signed for PB yet, there's no script! Ace

A longer report on the scriptmaking process from MKKBB'21' Screenplay Now In Progress March 09, 2004 In a personal appearance at the British Library in central London, screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade revealed that work has commenced on the script for Bond 21, writes Steven Woodbridge. The two screenwriters confirmed that they started the 'challenging' task two weeks ago, and will once again try to find 'new ways to explore the character'. They also commented that, 'as far as we understand it', Pierce Brosnan will indeed be Bond in the next film. Purvis and Wade appeared on stage as part of the Orange Word International Screenwriters' Season, and took part in a detailed interview and discussion on the art of screenwriting. The audience were treated to various clips from the films that have influenced the two writers over the years, including 'Sweet Smell of Success' with Tony Curtis and Burt Lancaster, which contains some beautifully constructed and very sharp dialogue, and also to excerpts from just a few of the 31 films they have now written themselves since their partnership formed, including, of course, TWINE and DAD. There was also the added bonus of a montage of scenes from their new film 'Return To Sender'. In an entertaining session on stage, the two screenwriters were subjected to a searching and often humorous interview, and then patiently responded to questions from the audience afterwards. At one point, they were also invited to do the 007 'Vodka Martini test', designed to test whether they could distinguish between which of the two glasses of vodka offered to them was 'shaken' or 'stirred'. Purvis and Wade both passed with flying colours! There was also a serious side to the proceedings, though, which gave particularly good insights into the challenges faced by modern screenwriters, especially in an industry that increasingly places 'pressure on the script' (as they put it), and requires writers to get the idea across as quickly as possible in order to get the screenplay moving along at a fast pace. During the course of the evening, the two screenwriters described the initial developmental process involved in putting together a script. They revealed that, when they think of a core idea, they put together a 'beat sheet' over coffee and beer. This 'nascent' stage of the project can take quite some time. Each writer then usually takes about 5 pages each and works on them, and then the other looks over their partners' work and the collaborative process really kicks in. Purvis and Wade pointed out that their scripts for the films 'Let Him Have It' and 'Plunkett and Macleane', as strongly 'character-driven' screenplays, very much appealed to the 007 producers in the late 1990s, who were looking to inject more drama into the Bond movies after TND. They had about 18 months overall to develop the TWINE script and revealed that the main requirement with 007, as far as they see it, is to try to 'anticipate' news before it happens - to tune into the latest geo-political trends and developments and try to work them up as a backdrop to the script. A lot of serious newspaper reading is involved. With TWINE, the main news-points involved oil, Russia, and nuclear proliferation. Similarly, with DAD, again they wrote with certain geo-political developments in mind. North Korea was very much in the news at the time. Both men referred to the Bond script-writing process as a 'nervous' experience. After all, a script that failed could seriously damage the most successful film series in cinema history. Wade also noted that its very difficult not to repeat what's been done before. Making things 'fresh' is very much a challenge: 'Finding a new journey for the character is always difficult'. The Broccoli family, however, were a 'fount of knowledge' on the topic, and always helped the two writers avoid the problem of repetition. The producers reminded them that one idea they had recently developed for Bond 21, for example, had already been used in 'Licence To Kill'. However, the two writers emphasised that, contrary to the common impression, the scriptwriting on a new Bond movie is not done 'by a committee', and both writers have been given a high degree of freedom to explore and develop the character and new Bond concepts. The two screenwriters also reflected that, as a character, Bond does not give much away - he does not 'externalise' his feelings too much. This makes it even more of a challenge to develop a new angle. The current Bond actor helps considerably here. They told the attentive audience that what they like about Pierce Brosnan is that he is particularly good at suggesting an undercurrent and dark tone to the character. They had also tried to 'break down' some of the 'cosiness' that had developed between Bond and the regular secret service characters in the later films - between M and Bond, Q and Bond, and Moneypenny and Bond. Some 'tension' between the characters was needed, to make the characters more rounded and 'interesting'. The 'virtual reality' sequence in DAD had been one way of doing this, together with the restoration of a certain 'testiness' between Q and 007, reminiscent of the earlier Connery films. Purvis and Wade also noted that they were especially interested in 'psychologically flawed' villains, an approach explored in both TWINE and DAD, and something they hoped to continue in the future. However, in the Questions and Answers session later on, they also acknowledged that it would be difficult to deliver a totally 'Fleming' movie, as certain expectations from audiences were now in place. But, they pointed out, the first half of DAD was still, in their opinion, very 'Flemingesque'. DAD was also an 'anniversary' Bond movie, something that had tied their hands to a certain extent. With Bond 21, they said they would like to 'step way' from that as far as possible and come up with something very fresh. The evening was also rewarding for the audience when Purvis and Wade were asked questions about both the 'Johnny English' film and the abandoned 'Jinx' project. They revealed that Johnny English ended up a very different movie to the one they originally envisaged, and they were both 'embarrassed' by it. They had not wanted to do a Bond spoof, and had written a script that originally paid homage to the Graham Greene spy genre. The original idea was about spies with very little to do, who went about 'creating' work for themselves because they were bored. However, after 9/11, and a change in the social and political atmostphere in Hollywood, it became unacceptable to criticise the intelligence services too closely, so the 'Graham Greene' type treatment was very much toned down by the studio - to the point where it became a mere James Bond spoof, something Purvis and Wade had wanted to avoid. Regarding the cancelled 'Jinx' movie, Purvis and Wade revealed that they had spent two months on the project with the director Stephen Frears. Frears had been happy with the script, and so had Halle Berry. However, the studio had pulled out at the last minute, which both writers had found 'extremely disappointing'. It was probably down to the fact that films such as Charlies Angels and Tomb-Raider, essentially female-driven films, had not done as well as originally expected with audiences. The studio had feared Jinx might suffer the same fate. Both writers stayed for a while afterwards and generously signed autographs on souvenirs brought along by some of the audience. All in all, it was a very enjoyable and unique evening. Many thanks go to Orange and to the British Library for hosting the event.

World Exclusive: Brosnan's back for BondWORLD EXCLUSIVE BY CARL JONES Pierce Brosnan is poised to return as James Bond for a fifth time after his Shropshire cousin exclusively revealed today that he had not been stripped of his licence to kill. The 50-year-old Irishman was reported last month to have been pensioned off in favour of a younger model, with names such as Clive Owen, Jude Law, Colin Farrell and Hugh Jackman among the favourites to take over. But Ann O'Callaghan, Brosnan's cousin who lives at Brookside in Telford, today revealed that he was being lined up to play Ian Fleming's secret agent at least one more time. Speaking after returning from a trip to visit relatives at the Brosnan family home in Navan, Ireland, she said: "Pierce told me last year he was lined up to do at least one more, and possibly two, and this is still the case. "No-one has sacked him, contrary to what the media has said," she added. Her claims were backed up by Bond script-writing duo Robert Wade and Neal Purvis, who revealed they had begun writing the 21st James Bond movie screenplay with Brosnan in mind. Wade said he was not aware of Brosnan being axed, adding: "He is a great Bond and he gives us lots to work with." Brosnan took over the role in 1995 and his four movies have taken over £700 million at the box office. His last outing, Die Another Day, raked in £250 million. The next 007 film is due for release in November next year. ******* I guess the interesting bit here really is the "Shropshire cousin".

AP: Brosnan Unsure About Spears Bond Rumor 3-22-04 LOS ANGELES - If pop singer Britney Spears is going to be a Bond girl, it's news to James Bond's Pierce Brosnan. The actor says he knows nothing about Spears becoming a Bond girl, in spite of rumors to that effect. Brosnan says, "Bless her cotton socks and good luck to her." If given a choice, Brosnan says he'd like Keira Knightley or Monica Belucci to be in a Bond movie. While the 21st Bond movie is supposed to be in theaters November of next year, Brosnan says the producers are having a hard time of it. He says "there's a certain sense of paralysis that has kind of blanketed production at the moment. The last Bond broke all records. They don't know what to do." Add to that the matriarch of the Bond empire, Dana Broccoli, recently passed away. Brosnan calls the Broccoli's death "a terrible loss." But, when things do get moving and the next Bond movie is ready to be filmed, Pierce Brosnan will be there. The actor has appeared in four Bond movies and says they know where to find him, "if they want to set sail with a fifth." ======================================= Bless her cotton socks? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Oh and a huge YEAH on Belucci and a nay to Keira (way too young and green even if she looks older and all her other recent men are older, much older) Ace

Um guess not. Bond's glass half empty: Brosnan's days with franchise could be numbered By LOUIS B. HOBSON -- Calgary Sun HOLLYWOOD -- James Bond is in limbo but Pierce Brosnan is neither shaken nor stirred. "We've reached an impasse with the producers. They seem to be paralyzed and can't move forward," says Brosnan who starred as 007 in the last four Bond films. It had been announced that Brosnan would do a fifth Bond film for the franchise, but the Irish actor insists "it is nowhere near a done deal but they know where to find me. "I was prepared to do a fifth film and then walk away, and we had started negotiations, so I want to follow through but conversations and telephone calls have dried up." Brosnan feels "the bar for these movies was raised so high with the last one and they don't seem to know how to improve on it. They don't have a script or a director so the rumours that we will begin filming in the fall are just rumours." Brosnan, who stars opposite Julianne Moore in the romantic comedy Laws of Attraction opening April 30, is heading off to Mexico City to begin filming The Matador with Greg Kinnear and Hope Davis.

BROSNAN STILL IN BOND-AGE? March 23, 2004 PIERCE BROSNAN told a Canadian newspaper that he has reached an impasse about the next Bond movie with its producers. Brosnan is quoted as saying, "The bar for these movies was raised so high with the last one and they don't seem to know how to improve on it. They don't have a script or a director so the rumors that we will begin filming in the fall are just rumors." 'Die Another Day,' co-starring HALLE BERRY, marked the 20th Bond film on its 40th anniversary and pulled in more than $300 million at the box office. Should Brosnan bow out of doing a fifth round as 007, other actors have already been mentioned including COLIN FARRELL, ORLANDO BLOOM and HUGH JACKMAN. et.tv.yahoo.com/newslink/index.html#l3Vote for Pierce in the ET poll. $300m, well give or take $125m And EEK, Orlando fangirls are spamming the poll... embarrassing. Frankly the producers would have to be on some serious hallugenics to make Orlando Bloom Bond. And figures I watch E!News which I never do to see PB, and he's on ET instead. Ace
