N.Y. Magazine Critics Pick nymag.com/listings/movie/married-life/in Married Life, Ira Sachs aims a bit lower than Green but obliterates his target: The funny, the scary, the campy, the sad—they’re all splendidly of a piece. The movie is a goof on Hitchcock and Sirk—a period (late forties) soap opera with nasty sexual undertones and the omnipresent threat of murder. The narrator, a Lord of Misrule, is Pierce Brosnan, who can play a too-handsome cad and convincingly parody one—everything rolls off him. But his best friend, the protagonist, is played by Chris Cooper, off whom nothing rolls: Sour, saggy, quivering with repressed longing, always a step away from implosion, Cooper straddles the comedy-melodrama border and keeps you both giggly and tense. The premise of Married Life is that he wants to spare his wife (Patricia Clarkson) the agony he knows she’ll feel when he leaves her for a young, blonde war widow (Rachel McAdams)—which means doing the humane thing and killing her. The joke is that he doesn’t have a clue what’s really in her head—or in the heads of his mistress and best friend: His scary switchback emotional roller-coaster ride has nothing to do with the real world. The movie is written from a male perspective—the women are projections—and wouldn’t work without the gorgeous Clarkson, neurasthenic one instant and the next the very image of sensual feline self-containment. — David Edelstein

I saw it tonight at a screening in NYC and Clarkson and Sachs were there for the low key and enjoyable Q & A afterwards. I loved it. It's an exquisite gem of a film - humorous, charming and poignant - crossing genres deftly and is so beautifully acted by the entire cast. I thought the narration was wonderful. It's not overused or dense and it's wry, witty, playful and thoughtful - and yeah because it's Pierce it's pure sex. It sets the tone for the entire film -- along with the gorgeous animated pre title sequence (that Sachs says was the idea and creation of a recent Russian emigre, aged 24). Pierce's role is more a supporting one (but then he was almost supporting in Tailor of Panama as far as screen time as well) but he's a fascinating character. There are scenes and narration from the book with Richard that I'd have loved to see more fleshed out as well as maybe a little more focus on him and Kay (McAdams) but cinematically what was shown works for all the characters. Having read the book I wondered how the director was going to change the end and make it work and I think he succeeded in regards to the story he wanted to tell by adding a couple new small twists. Still I'd love to see an alternate cut with the original ending -- but that would be a different film. Supposedly there's at least 1/2 hour of non used material that was shot though none of it an alternate ending. There's one scene of about 5 minutes (that Chris Cooper mentions in an interview he did with NPR) of when Richard finds Pat in a compromising position that is beyond brilliant in regard to Pierce's comedic skills - verbal and physical. Even if I didn't thoroughly enjoy the rest of the film (and I did, Cooper is especially marvelous) that sequence alone would have been worth the price of admission. And yes I know it's politically incorrect and unhealthy but damn the man really knows how to smoke on screen. So well that his use of cigarettes in celluloid should probably call for it's own special warning. Ace

Excerpt from Interview with Sachs blog.jaman.com/?p=334AMAN: It’s a terrific cast. Along with Chris Cooper, you’ve got Patricia Clarkson, Rachel McAdams, and Pierce Brosnan, who’s really the one bonafide movie star here. Brosnan is eminently watchable, but how was it different working with him? His background is so different from Cooper and Clarkson’s. IRA: I think that every actor needs something different from a director. Part of your job is just to figure what would create an environment that would make them each comfortable to do their best work. What I was struck by in Pierce’s performance was his comic elegance. The wit and the comic timing, he has a real Cary Grant quality, there’s a fluidity to his performance which is physical, almost acrobatic…but he also pulls off a certain vulnerability which gives the film a lot of heart. It was also surprising that he could pull off such a fully rounded, vulnerable character, and yet still be in the mold of a comic bon vivant, he pulled off the movie star persona, and there’s a depth beneath that.

www.edfilmfest.org.uk/films/married-life/Married Life Ira Sachs / United States of America / 2007 / 90 mins Pierce Brosnan, Chris Cooper, Patricia Clarkson, Rachel McAdams, David Richmond-Peck, David Wenham Performance dates Sat 21 Jun, 17:00 Tue 24 Jun, 19:45 A treat of a film: clever, gorgeously visual and expertly performed. Oscar®-winner Chris Cooper (an In Person guest of last year's EIFF) is the eye of this deliciously dark emotional storm. He plays businessman Harry, who's desperate to leave nice wife Pat (Patricia Clarkson) for lovely young Kay (Rachel McAdams) - without hurting anyone. Couldn't Pat just... disappear? The noirish intrigue is deftly managed by writer/director Ira Sachs (40 Shades of Blue) and his exceptional cast, also including a fabulously caddish Pierce Brosnan. Eye For Film: Edinburgh International Film Festival 2008 films announcedA great line-up for an ever-popular event by Max Blinkhorn and Scott Macdonald Taking their first look at the programme The freshly revamped Edinburgh International Film Festival today revealed its plans for 2008. Eye For Film correspondents Max and Scott were there to hear them. Photos are by Max Blinkhorn. Max writes:- Edinburgh's yearly film bash, the EIFF, was launched today on a sunny Scots morn and the message was "It's a cracker". The assembled media and film world were treated to a showreel of exciting clips from films to be featured in the two week long event. The three big reelers in the Fest, Hannah McGill, Ken Hay and Ginnie Atkinson, enthused about the context and took great pains to remind us of the Festival's earlier dates (18th to 29th June). McGill, characteristically shy but stylish in a little brown dress, modestly told us of the goodies to come. She thanked Cineworld and the Filmhouse for their ongoing contributions to the cause of the EIFF and, of course, of Scottish cinema in general. The showreel included a tantalising glimpse of Pixar's new animated character Wall-E, which made everyone sit up and look, while Pierce Brosnan is hunky as always in Married Life - or should that be death? It's a marvellously atmospheric piece and the girls are stunningly gorgeous in this Forties-style sexy murder thriller.

On DVD in the U.S.: July 1, 2008 Does anyone know if the DVD release date has been changed? I can't find ML available for pre-order, which it should be if July 1 were the date. videoeta.com says ML will be released in September but they can't post the actual release date until June 30th. On DVD.talk forums they list the date as Sept. 2, 2008.

DVD Talk is usually good at dates so I guess Sept 2 is it. DVD Empire removed the July date a few weeks ago and hasn't updated it.
