Does anyone know where the character came from? It may be slightly misspelled. It looks like a kids' story or a cartoon because just a couple of days ago my 7-year-old son tried to tell me something about her.
It's kind of urgent and it's a work-related question for a good friend of mine, so if you have anything to say today, I'd appreciate it.
Later edit. The exact expression is "Mamadreqja, grandmother of all witches." It comes from Jonathan Carroll's Marriage of Sticks. But where did he get it from?

What does "oh my" expression usually refer to? I was just reflecting on hard life of a person who has to make his living translating something like that. Second plan, subtext, context, vast area of author's expertise of which neither the translator nor the editor know absolutely nothing, double entendres, etc., etc., etc... Oh, and also smart-ass readers and yet smarter critics... Sigh... Um... I spent the last few days lurking in translators' forums at www.livejournal.com. Had a few good laughs. This question was for a friend, though, and he ended up emailing the author asking him where it came from.

Oooohhh....
Who cares about his trials and tribulations, he got to e-mail Jonathan Carroll!

;D ;D ;D Which one is it from? He "got" to email Carroll before; I remember because I helped with some research. www.jonathancarroll.com/ - you can email him, too, his address in on the site. The question is whether he'll answer...

My condolences to your friend. I've only had a glimpse yet on what my future job will be like, but it was already enough to put people straight who think that translating is not a "real job" for which you have to work hard.
From what I am told translating literature, which is the hardest field in this job anyway, but imo also the most exciting and interesting, doesn't pay enough to make a living from it. You'd have to have an additional source of income. At least that's what the situation here in Germany is like.

Alas, I think you're right. My friend used to translate encyclopedias and other stuff to supplement income. I don't think he does that anymore, though maybe I just don't know.
What language are you going to translate from?

I translate mainly from English into German and vice versa. I specialise in economics.
I also get a little education in French, but I won't receive an official leaving certificate for that. This is not possible at my school bacause you choose one main language and an optional second one. I'm far better at translating from French into German than vice versa, naturally.

So, what profession do you have to fall back on?

Might apply for a job as personal assistant to PB. Seriously, I'm actually about to take an exam as bi-lingual secretary. I can do that parallel to my studies at the same school without too much extra work. Now I only have to pass it, of course.
