Maybe that's why he's not coming back -- they threatened him with another invisible/animated co presenter. Gotta love the photo name tags they slap on the stars. Priceless.

I wonder how many tags are misspelled...

He's still not listed as presenter. I'll tape it anyway (time difference and all that), but I'd have liked to have his appearance to look forward to. His name-tag photo looks suspiciously Bond-ish too boot. I wonder how many tags are misspelled... As long as they didn't hire John Travolta to make them, they might be okay.

Last night .. the 78 Annual Oscars: it wasn't long into watching it before I became grateful that Pierce didn't have anything to do with this stinker. It was an awkward moment that dragged on for hours. I hope he spent the day packing for Vancouver and then tossing about with his kids on the livingroom carpet.

So I was not the only one who thought the whole show a tad awkward. I liked George Clooney's acceptance speech, however, and there were a few gorgeous outfits (Salma Hayek, Keira Kneightley, Jennifer Garner). But the most awkward vibes I got were from the host, John(?) Stewart. He didn't seem to be comfortable with his task at all. And whatever was the problem with the usually formidable Lauren Bacall? I was really worried about the way she stumbled on her lines.

Lauren Bacall is 81 years old, she looks so great we can forget that and younger eyes than hers have had trouble with the tele prompter, and younger legs than hers had trouble getting across the stage (probably too smooth with new shoes).
I liked Stewart quite a bit. I thought he started off a tad nervously but got better and bett as the evening went along and he had some great dry onliners about some of the ridiculousness around him. I also liked the skits he obviously wrote, from the opening skit to those attack ads.
"Dame Judi Dench poked my eye out in a bar fight!"
The pacing as usual with these awards though was a killer. They spend far too little time showing clips from the nominated films and performances and are too obsessed with dragging people off stage who've worked a lfe time to be there. And yet they pad the show with montage after montage (like Stewart's joke that later there would be a montage of the best Academy montages!) , some really bad presenter babble and skits that might work if they were all half as long. How long did that Stiller joke go on and on -- as well as the Streep/Tomlon bit which was funny for about 30 seconds.... then not.
Don't even get me stared on the rancid dance they insist on doing behind song nominations. The only song performance that was enjoyable was by Dolly Parton because she actually performed the SONG and she didn't have any silly garbage behind her.
Oh Altman, I thought he was going to thanks the young woman that made his life possible, and all he managed to do was stumble over her age and sex and gloat he had years left. I bet that boosted organ donations across the nation!
George Clooney's speech was very good -- loved his line that he knew Beest Director was now out -- but his joking and smirking intro to the In memorioum was horrid. The only actor who would have been more inappropriate would have been Nicholson.
But as usual the show lingered where it should have sped up and sped up where it should have lingered. I think Stewart actually did as well a job as could be expected linking the segments and commentating on what was going on and without being smug or acting as if the show was about him which it isn't. I think if he were asked back next year he'd be better because he'd be more comfortable. He was easily better than Chris Rock, Letterman and Whoopi.

Lauren Bacall is 81? Wow. I was worried that she might have health problems, but of course now I understand.
Maybe I picked up Stewart's nervousness in the beginning and then I kind of got the wrong impression. I haven't seen his show, so I couldn't tell if that's just how he is. But yes, Chris Rock hosting was less enjoyable, and I can't imagine Letterman as an Oscar host either. During the introductory montage I thought they had him in as a joke. I didn't know he had hosted the Oscars before.
