What is it with Apple and their Quicktime player? Can't they have a decent version of it for Windows 95? One that doesn't come in zip-format, installs properly and doesn't tell you during the setup that there's a later version available, for which you have to connect to the inernet to download it only to find out later that it doesn't run on your operating system? I'm sure that I installed the damn thing at least five times, and it never worked. Either there was some mistake that didn't make it start in the first place, or I get sound but no picture. I'm nearly going berserk with this. Does anybody have an idea what to do?

When they ask you to upgrade, then don't! Everytime my Windows Player or my Winamp or several other programs tells me to do that I was directed to a non-Win95 compatible program, now I don't even bother to click the link.
I use QT on Win 95. I have the the 5.02 version.

Yes, but the problem is, you can't escape the upgrade! I installed the 5.20 player from their support page because it's the latest version for Windows 95. It comes as a zip file, but when you unzip and start the setup it suddenly wants to connect to the internet before the setup is finished. Then it starts installing version 6.something, which I don't want.

A little searching via Google and I found a site that hosts the 5.0.2 Quicktime version in exe form that you can download. That should keep it from trying to automatically upgrade since it's a standalone and not in zip form. www.access.com.eg/FTP_DownLoad/aud-ved.htmAce

Oh, Ace, I can't thank you enough!!! I was about to give up. ::immediately starts downloading:: *** Edit: It was unfortunately the same installer. I was again "forced" to download the QT 6 installer. I'll just give up, I've had enough. Anyway, thank you very much for your help.

Kelly has stated on her board under the Laws topic that she managed to download the media trailer and has graciously offered to share it with those who e-mail her. Go check it out. Ace

SparklingBlue, I think I found the solution to your problem. It's from the Quicktime site (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43083): Important: The QuickTime 4 and QuickTime 5 installers are saved to your computer as a Zip archive (Figure 1). You must first decompress, or "unzip", the archive before you can install QuickTime. If you try to install using the Zip archive, this message will appear: "This application may depend on other compressed files in this folder. For the application to run properly, it is recommended that you first extract all files." You can then click "Extract all", Run, or Cancel. Clicking Run will install QuickTime 6. To install QuickTime 4 or 5, click Extract all and then run the installer from the extracted folder.Hope it works for you, migs

You know, I was doing just what you posted and it still didn't work. The problem is not the un-zipping, but the fact that the setup always looks for later versions of QT and installs these instead of the one you want. Thank you so much for looking, migs! I'm sorry!

Which version of quicktime did you download? If you go to docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120133there is a quciktime 5 version to download. I'm downloading it now to see if I can get 5 to install without asking for an update. I'll let you know what happens. migs

Okay, I downloaded the Quicktime 5 from the url I posted above and it installed fine. I have Windows 98, but that shouldn't make any difference. It didn't say anything about updates or internet connections. Here are the steps I took: 1. Downloaded Quicktime 5. 2. Disconnected from the internet. 3. Unzipped the quicktime file. 4. Opened the Unzipped folder (QuickTimeInstaller) 5. Opened the folder in that folder (QuickTimeCDInstaller) 6. That folder contains 2 files: an .exe program and a .qdat folder. I clicked the .exe file and it started the installation. 7. Kept clicking "next" until the installation was finished. Make sure you don't have any leftover Quicktime files or folders from previous installations (or attempts) and then try again. Good luck, migs

Congrats! Maybe it was as simple as doing it offline so it had nothing to latch on to, to try and update, or just doing everything in the exact right sequence... why oh why must they make it all so difficult. Sparkling there are links to direct download the trailer on my site for the med and lo versions if you need them instead of the hi. Ace

Thanks!! I figure it must have been the order in which I unzipped the installer. Appararently you have to unzip installer and cache at the same time so that it doesn't ask you to go online and begins installing properly. Already helped myself to the lo-res version of the trailer. Lovely, just lovely! ;D
