Ilana Glazer, Justin Theroux, Pierce Brosnan to Star in A24 Horror Movie ‘False Positive’ by Jeff Sneider March 28, 2019
For the past week I’ve been trying to confirm that Pierce Brosnan would play a mad doctor in A24’s psychological horror movie False Positive, to no avail. Well, the studio itself confirmed today that Brosnan has, in fact, signed on to join Ilana Glazer in the film, which sounds batshit insane.
A24 hoped to keep the premise of False Positive under wraps in its announcement (check the ever-dutiful trades), but this logline is so crazy that it inspired a feature I’ve been chipping away at all day, since I wanted to write about this project despite being stonewalled on the casting front.
So… here we go. Glazer (Broad City) and Justin Theroux (The Leftovers) will play a couple who are struggling to conceive a child, so they go see this fertility doctor (Brosnan), only the doctor is crazy and tricks them by getting her pregnant with his own sperm. pierce-brosnan-false-positive
I’m sorry, but that is next-level messed up… and a killer premise for a psychological horror movie. There’s no word on whether the film is based on the disgusting true story of Donald Cline, a fertility doctor who used his own sperm to inseminate approximately 50 women between the 1970s and 1980s. While he was stripped of his medical license, he ultimately didn’t face any criminal charges for lying to his patients, which is truly sickening.
Anyway, John Lee is directing from a script he co-wrote with Glazer, and the two of them are producing alongside Jonathan Wang. Production starts next week in New York. As for the supporting cast, it will feature Josh Hamilton (Eighth Grade), Gretchen Mol (Rounders), Sophia Bush (Chicago P.D.) and Zainab Jah (Homeland).
A24 has been crushing it on the horror front of late between Hereditary and The Witch, not to mention personal favorites like Green Room, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and Tusk, and I can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeves with Ari Aster’s Midsommar. Hopefully I still get invited to a future press screening of that film after dishing the dirt about False Positive, but hey, that’s the job. That the doctor is crazy is part of the premise, not a spoiler, and besides, by the time this film comes out, you won’t even remember this article given the 24-hour news cycle. I’m just saying, this film is going to inspire more than a few think pieces, and I can’t wait to read them all. No word on a release date for False Positive, but perhaps we’ll see it in nine months or so. ilana-glazer-false-positive

False Positive Tease: Broad City's Ilana Glazer's Evil Delivery Debuts Posted on May 21, 2021 by Jeremy Konrad | Comments
False Positive is a new horror film coming to Hulu on June 25th, starring Broad City's Ilana Glazer, Pierce Brosnan, and Justin Theroux. It will hold its debut before hitting the streaming service at the Tribeca Film Festival, and a new teaser for the film was dropped ahead of a more full-length trailer soon. This is an A24 film, so you can expect some weirdness. Sophia Bush and Gretchen Mol will also appear in the film, from director John Lee, he himself a veteran of directing Broad City and the creator of Wonder Showzen.
False Positive Synopsis
"After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Ilana Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle's gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him and her own "birth story." As if getting pregnant weren't complicated enough…" Since this is an A24 production, you know demons are involved; I am pretty sure it is required at this point.
I am just excited to see Glazer in this. She is really branching out from comedy here, and she also will produce this film and co-wrote the script. She is uber-talented, and it is awesome to see her doing something different than what we are used to seeing her in. Man, this really is going to be the summer for horror, isn't it? Especially on streaming, there is so much quality horror coming across all the various services; it will be hard to keep up with. Make sure False Positive is one you don't forget about on June 25th.

‘False Positive’ Teaser: Ilana Glazer Stars in A24’s Bloody ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ Riff Posted on Saturday, May 22nd, 2021 by Hoai-Tran Bui
Hulu has released the teaser for False Positive, a new A24 feature billed as a Rosemary’s Baby-inspired horror film. Ilana Glazer of Broad City fame sheds her comedy persona to star in False Positive as a woman who finds her dream fertility doctor (Pierce Brosnan) and finally gets pregnant, only for something sinister to begin happening. Watch the False Positive teaser below.
This is the briefest of teasers, playing more like those annoying pre-trailer reels that have become common in the YouTube era, but it suggests that maybe Ilana Glazer’s comedy chops won’t go completely unused after all. From the 14 bloody seconds that this teaser played, there’s a distinct camp element to it — is False Positive a horror comedy instead of straight up horror? That would certainly be a fresh twist on the Rosemary’s Baby formula, which follows a woman who starts to believe her unborn baby is the spawn of the devil.
Still, it’s a departure for Glazer, who is best known for her role as Ilana in the Comedy Central hit show Broad City, which she co-starred and co-wrote with longtime friend Abbi Jacobson. While Jacobson has found flourishing career in the voice acting field post-Broad City, Glazer has mostly stuck to the familiar genre of raunchy comedy, appearing in films like The Night Before and Rough Night. But it’s exciting to see her take a leap into horror with False Positive, though with Glazer also producing alongside director John Lee and Jonathan Wang, we can probably expect some sort of comedic bent.
Hulu announced that A24’s False Positive will debut on the streamer this summer, following a Tribeca Film Festival premiere. The film is directed by John Lee, the creator of Wonder Showzen who has also helmed episodes of Broad City and Netflix’s Pee-wee’s Big Holiday.
Starring alongside Ilana Glazer are Justin Theroux (American Psycho),Pierce Brosnan, Sophia Bush and Gretchen Mol.
Here’s the synopsis for False Positive:
After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Ilana Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” As if getting pregnant weren’t complicated enough…
False Positive will World Premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 18, 2021 before it’s expected to arrive on Hulu on Friday, June 25, 2021.

Tribeca Review: False Positive Ilana Glazer’s modern Rosemary’s Baby arguably finds something more demonic by Matt Dougherty June 18, 2021 in featured, Reviews, TRIBECA
From minute one, everything feels just a little bit off in John Lee’s False Positive. The first act lives in a heightened satire of Manhattan privilege, taking digs at excitement over Dig Inn orders while Lucy (Ilana Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) struggle to conceive in their fiercely lit triple height penthouse apartment that peers over the streets like the Tower of Terror. The grim lower perspective on their building echoes the way Mia Farrow stared up at the gothic architecture of her character’s home on the same island in Rosemary’s Baby.
Lee’s film, on which he shares a screenwriting credit with Glazer, borrows a lot from the rightfully disgraced Roman Polanski’s undeniable 1968 masterstroke. But its strength lies more in how it reclaims the narrative rather than retelling it. The plot kicks in as Adrian offers to take Lucy to a renowned fertility doctor who happens to be his former professor (Pierce Brosnan). The ultra-modern, ultra-clean clinic at first seems like a hopeful mother’s dream. Brosnan’s Dr. Hindle is quick to comfort Lucy, offering immediate solutions, and then results, for the couple’s conception trouble via artificial insemination. Suddenly, Lucy is glowing, and that’s when things go from feeling off to feeling wrong.
Even so, Lee’s direction and Pawel Pogorzelski’s cinematography play it cool, similar to how he shot Hereditary and Midsommar with Ari Aster. False Positive builds not unlike the latter, with little things going wrong building to bigger contradictions and visual paranoia. At just 92 minutes, the film is stunningly economical, even with a great many of its scenes purposefully slowing to a crawl to achieve an uneasy social awkwardness (you’ll never see Brosnan the same after you’ve seen him slowly ready gynecological tools with a cheery smile here).
But with such elongated sequences, the film naturally relies heavily on its cast to carry them. Glazer knocks it out of the park, perfectly in tune with and reacting to the film’s satire of New York high society while still becoming believably paranoid about just how much control she has over her body. Theroux, too, is perfect as the loving but suspicious husband. His charm goes beyond what could have been a simple Christian Grey-type and into something real. And then there’s Brosnan, stealing scenes right out from under both of them with a horrifying level-headedness that’ll have you screaming at the screen and squirming in your seat.
Together, alongside a quietly deranged Gretchen Mol as Hindle’s all too loyal assistant, the main cast fits very comfortably in the roles that populated Rosemary’s Baby, to the point where the transition from the second act to the third feels a little too much like a mere remake. But False Positive manages to elevate itself with a much more contemporary intent than the classic it borrows from. Where Rosemary came up against the antichrist itself, here, the devil is found in the patriarchy. Glazer and Lee’s script manages to make men the villain without talking down to its audience or reading false (or too preachy). That’s partially due to savvy writing and filmmaking, but also because the film is bringing attention to real things that happen to real women.
The film’s twists are a little obvious, and it doesn’t necessarily even try to disguise them rather than set an uneasy tone throughout, but they serve a larger purpose. Once the third act evolves into the story’s ultimate resolution, things go artistically off the wall in the most satisfying way possible. The last ten minutes are the type of filmmaking where you and everyone in the audience around you has their jaw on the floor. But its oddities have major emotional purpose in getting to the place False Positive bravely leaves us on. It’s brazen but rewarding—a splash of cold water that earns our attention and then some. For as much as the film plays to the strengths of the classic it’s reimagining, its ultimate point is beautifully executed and wholly invigorating. This isn’t a story about a woman’s body, it’s one about the control men grant themselves, and what the fight for freedom from that might look like.

The 'Broad City' actress is unable to watch her new horror movie 'False Positive' about pregnant women because she's expecting her first child in real life.
Jun 20, 2021
AceShowbiz - Actress Ilana Glazer won't watch her own pregnancy horror movie "False Positive" now she's expecting in real life.
The "Broad City" star, who is expecting her first child with husband David Rooklin, appears in the film with Justin Theroux as a couple with fertility issues.
"It's a horror movie about how women are treated in the medical system, specifically when they are pregnant," she said on America's "Live With Kelly and Ryan".
She closed her eyes when a clip of the movie screened, then added that her co-star Pierce Brosnan, who plays a world-renowned fertility specialist who isn't quite who he seems, terrified her.
"Pierce is so scary in this movie, it's shocking," Glazer shared. "He was so good. You don't think of someone as beautiful and elegant as he is (can) be so scary, but actually those qualities make him scarier as a villain."
