An excerpt from in interview with Emma Thompson ... www.theenquirer.co.uk/emma-thompson-it-was-heaven-to-be-driving-an-ex-james-bond-around/“I did my own stunt driving up and down the steps with Pierce next to me,” she says proudly. “It was heaven to be driving an ex James Bond around. If I’d gone up another step we’d have tipped over but I was just having too good a time so the angle got more acute and Pierce’s terror became more apparent, which of course made me want to go further!” As the first time the actress has worked with Pierce Brosnan, Emma couldn’t have been more complementary to the star, who found fame in the 90s as the MI6 agent 007. But as the leading man in a romantic comedy, I have to ask, was he a good kisser? “Yes,” giggles Emma, bashfully. “I had him kissing me all day to practice as many times as I could. “It’s interesting because you can’t really be a movie star if you can’t walk or run and some people just can’t,” she continues. “But Pierce has glamour and the most extraordinary physical grace, he’s like a ballerina. That sounds odd but, he’s got this extraordinary way of moving. And then also he’ll sit there, be doing a crossword and being very normal and Catholic.”

everythingmultimediaonline.wordpress.com/2014/04/19/divorcees-make-the-best-partners-the-love-punch/Emma Thompson and Pierce Brosnan are evidently two of the most talented people to come out of Britain. Throwing them together in a film set in France, as a divorced couple is what helped the most to make The Love Punch work. With their daughter moving out, off to university in Scotland, divorced couple Kate and Richard are brought together on a mission after their retirement money, savings for the kids etc is practically stolen from them by a rich French dude after he runs the company Richard works for into the ground (as per usual). So in return, Kate and Richard scheme to perform a Robin Hood scenario, to steal from the rich and give to the poor. With the help of Celia Imrie and Timothy Spall (who seems to know everyone) the awesome four travel to France where they put their action into motion to get back what is rightfully theirs. It’s a typical British comedy in the sense of the humour, food, golf and script, and it’s very refreshing, sunny and bright (It’s not always dull and rainy in England). When the scenery switches to France, it does feel like a lovely holiday with the sun, sea, sandy beaches and fancy hotels. Thompson and Brosnan’s relationship is really funny, with little pinches of innuendos a happily divorced couple should have (if only all divorced couples where like that). They play the part really well and make fun with the situation at hand. Obviously there are a few emotions running high between the two but there’s the force of not wanting to look back to the past that sometimes pulls them apart (it’s not as vibrant and full paced as It’s Complicated). The constant reminder that their all past their 50’s and considered “old” adds to the humour especially when it comes to climbing, swimming, back pains and bunions. With Thompson’s awkward, fast witted personality and Brosnan’s determined charm, The Love Punch is a very likeable comedy. A solid cast, an acceptable story and a bunch of great fun performances that will get you laughing. 3.5 out of 5 stars

A review I found on Tumblr from tuppencetee ...
I just got back from seeing The Love Punch and I have to say I enjoyed every single minute of it. It wasn’t until we left the cinema that I realised I had been smiling constantly from the second it began to the moment it ended. A thoroughly enjoyable and funny film.
I couldn’t say a favourite part or a favourite character or actor, because everything was equal. I loved the chemistry and dynamic between Kate (Emma) and Richard (Pierce) and their wonderful back and forth, I loved Pen (Celia) and Jerry (Tim) with their running joke of Jerry revealing different parts of his (increasingly sketchy James-Bond-sounding) past and Pen just becoming increasingly confused and shocked by all this new information about her husband.
The heist itself was fantastic, and full of priceless moments with great timing, and I really loved that this film didn’t do what a lot of (and I do use the quote marks because it’s not a phrase I use myself) ‘Mature audience’ films do, which is make the youth the enemy. That wasn’t the case at all here; the stereotypical beautiful twenty-something was not demonised and actually had some brilliant moments herself. The only bad guy was the business man stealing the pensions. And seeing a group of people, average people, getting the better of him in a wonderfully funny way, just makes for a marvy film and I enjoyed every second.
And I can’t deny with Emma, Pierce, Celia and Timothy this was essentially a dream cast for me. They were all brilliantly funny, but all four of them also brought really tender moments to the film which was lovely.
Favourite line has to be:
Kate: Oh God, we didn’t did we?
Richard: No.
Kate: Oh thank God.
Richard: No need to sound so relieved.
Kate: Well, I haven’t had sex for two years……I would have liked to have remembered it.
and generally any line that Tim came out with was pure gold.
I highly advise you all go and see it. It isn’t the comedies you typically get though, so if you adore Cameron Diaz and Kirsten Dunst tripping up over their own dress while trying to impress some guy at a banquet, be prepared that this film is miles away from that (in my opinion, rather overdone) comedy theme and I loved The Love Punch all the more for it.
Not to mention it’s a great aesthetic pleasure just having Pierce on the screen. That always brings a smile to my face. But that’s another matter entirely.

Overwhelmingly positive reviews of this film by the general public on twitter and tumblr

From Screen Daily:
Rounding off this week’s top five was eOne’s The Love Punch, with a solid debut of $1m (£611,000) from its 373 sites. That’s narrowly behind the $1.1m (£640,390) UK debut from 302 sites for director Joel Hopkins’ previous UK outing, Last Chance Harvey.

The Love Punch Opening Titles ...
A stylish retro sequence with some tricky transitions!
This opens the Pierce Brosnan / Emma Thompson heist-romcom set in the south of France.
The original animation was produced in 4 days, then after some public test screenings we were asked to extend it and add more scenes.
The final delivery was tight - Tom jumped on the Eurostar to Paris, dropped off the drive, grabbed a sandwich and came back in a matter of hours!
Anyway, the film's out now - a pleasant Springtime matinee.
Designed and Directed by Miki Kato
Animator: Nic Benns
3D Animator: James Doherty
Producer: Tom Bromwich

www.moviesinfocus.co.uk/#/latest/4561138761/Review-THE-LOVE-PUNCH-Succeeds-On-The-Charm-Of-Pierce-Brosnan-And-Emma-Thompson/8004554Review: THE LOVE PUNCH Succeeds On The Charm Of Pierce Brosnan And Emma Thompson By Niall Browne, Apr 25 2014 9:22AM The Love Punch isn’t a great movie – but it is an enjoyable one. Joel Hopkins’ comedy succeeds on the ample charm of stars Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson. The duo manage to turn what could have been a disappointing comedy into a light a breezy farce. Brosnan and Thompson play Richard and Kate, a divorced couple who have lost their retirement fund to a crooked hedge fund banker. Rather than watch their life’s work fade away, they decide to head-off to France in an attempt to recoup their loss – which leads to them attempting a £10 million diamond heist. Brosnan is no stranger to suave robberies. The Irish star has made a career out of classy crimes in films such as The Thomas Crown Affair and After The Sunset, while also dabbling in a bit of larceny in the television show Remington Steele. He can do this type of movie in his sleep, but it also helps that he has amazing comic timing – something which many people seem to forget. The Love Punch sees Brosnan play on his suave reputation by making his character something of a bumbling idiot (fans of Remington Steele will know that this type of performance is nothing new). You can tell he’s having a blast. Emma Thompson matches Brosnan in manic energy. She sparks-off the former James Bond, coming across as both neurotic and the sensible one in their dysfunctional relationship. Thompson, like Brosnan has a physicality to her comedy that makes it feel real and also over the top. It may verge on slapstick, but there’s more nuance to it than that, there’s more precision. They don’t go mining for laughs, even when the material sometimes sets them back. Timothy Spall and Celie Imrie also impress in supporting roles as the kooky friends of our unlikely heroes. They’re a solid counterpoint to Brosnan and Thompson, playing a more down-to-earth couple who tag along in the adventure for a bit of mid-life excitement. Spall and Imrie add a welcome extra dimension to the film, delivering a few stand-out comedic moments of their own. What lets The Love Punch down is the unfocused script by director Joel Hopkins. It’s not bad, but it’s not great either. It feels like it’s one draft away from being complete. I get the feeling that the talent had signed on and a schedule was already agreed before Hopkins could craft the script into something that he was ready to shoot. A few too many plot points are left dangling and a couple of extraneous subplots make The Love Punch feel a touch unfocused. The film needed to be tighter – punchier. Ultimately, The Love Punch is worth watching for the performances given by its stars. This middle-aged comedy hits all the right notes for a fun romp, with great scenery (it’s set in France) and a wonderful sense of energy. Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson show that they have plenty of vigour and charisma left to show top-line a romantic comedy that doesn’t feel like it was crafted by a committee. It’s a film that once again proves that over fifty doesn’t mean over the hill.

entertainment.inquirer.net/140561/brosnan-and-thompson-ham-it-upBrosnan and Thompson ham it upBy Rito P. Asilo Philippine Daily Inquirer April 26, 2014 | 12:50 am BROSNAN AND THOMPSON. Loony mirth and featherweight humor. Netizens have an appropriate piece of advice for moviegoers who expect great things from Joel Hopkins’ “The Love Punch,” if only because the rom-com marks Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson’s first screen pairing: Manage your expectations. The rom-com does not have a lofty ambition—it just wants its actors to have a fun time and enjoy the picture-perfect scenery. After all, you don’t watch “Borat” and demand the comedic sophistication and believability of, say, “Annie Hall” from Sacha Baron Cohen. Of course it’s fair to expect exciting action scenes from former James Bond Pierce, as well as spectacular “dramedic” moments from two-time Oscar winner Emma, who respectively portray Richard and Kate Jones, a divorced British couple who travels to Paris to steal a diamond necklace from the lovely future bride (Louise Bourgoin) of Vincent Kruger (Laurent Lafitte), the greedy business mogul responsible for the loss of their retirement money! Does that sound too wacky? Wait till you see Thompson doing most of the action stunts while Brosnan doze off on a beach in the swanky Côte d’Azur. You’ll find yourself alternately snickering at the movie’s implausibilities—and wishing you were having as much fun (and sun) as they do! Zany antics With their tongues firmly in cheek, Brosnan and Thompson dutifully—and conveniently—ignore the production’s lapses and embrace the loony mirth required to make their zany antics more tolerable than their film’s featherweight humor. Richard and Kate call in their similarly unhinged friends, Jerry (Timothy Spall) and Penelope (Celia Imrie), to help them pull off their grand larceny and portray the tacky Texans they kidnap (!) before the wedding. If that isn’t challenging enough, Kate must accomplish the harder task of winning the trust of Kruger’s fiancée to pull off their high-stakes heist. Yes, there are more details in the story that don’t make sense. Having said that, however, it’s certainly disarming to see the usually prissy Thompson hamming it up and trading comedic barbs with Remington Steele’s now much older alter ego, as they help their characters explore the possibility of rekindling their romance. And, why not? Everybody deserve a second chance at love!

Wow, the art dept went all out with the creativity - as well as the airbrush on both - though at least Emma still looks human unlike Rene on the Thomas Crown Affair poster.
