Over at salon dot com they’re reporting that celebrities are not so different from you or me in “Attack of the Celebrity Blogs.” www.salon.com/ent/feature/2005/03/19/celebrity_blogs/index.html. On inspection, we find that CB's can range from the sublime, Sir Ian McKellan’s digressively witty “Grey Book” to the ridiculous, Melanie Griffith’s form letter to her inner self. (Yikes!) The question on everyone’s lips here no doubt, is why hasn’t the SMA hopped aboard this trend – too busy, too A-list? Nah. If Sir Ian can do it – well then PB should take a page from “No Excuses” jeans and get keyed up, eh? The article notes that Jeff Bridges illustrates his musings with Lennon-esque line drawings, proving that man can doodle on his napkin for only so long but his blog is a different story. Don’t you think Brosnan sketching around the margins would be mondo cool, indeed? By the way, Ace, do you know what happened to movie critic Charles Taylor? I like Stephanie Zacharek, too, but wasn’t Salon City big enough for the both of them? Has he gone elsewhere? I once wrote to him about his review of TCA because, at a point when most critics were intimating that those who liked the movie were shallow, he was a guy who “got it” – knew that it wasn’t just about conspicuous consumption, but the adult pleasures of sparring, seduction, meeting one’s match – and art appreciation, too. “Charlie” wrote me a really lovely response back, happy that we both “got it” and devoutly wishing there were more “adults only” films out there, so to speak. (Sorry, I don’t have it anymore. Damn. Lost in an e mail crash.)

Dont you think Brosnan sketching around the margins would be mondo cool, indeed? I'm going to have to go with an emphatic no. I know it's all the rage to let loose one's private musings all over the net but at least most people know they won't up on the newswire. Contact Music & WENN would be releasing them in mangled form daily. I wouldn't mind daily doodles though. No, I don't know what happenned to him. I hadn't read about a shift, not like when the NY Times had their critics comings and goings. If he's gone then too bad because as you say he's a very good critic. Also a very cool one in that he wrote you back! Ace

I’m going to have get you and David Spade into therapy! As for the *cough* accuracy *cough* of the newswires, well, with our eyes firmly on the prize, we could all ignore that. Context has never been the ne plus ultra of celebrity reportage, so what else is new?
You have to admit that no matter how bad piercebrosnan.com/blog was for our health we’d all eat it up with a spoon. Wouldn’t we? No no, a thousand times nyet! I don’t want to hear that Julianne Moore called to chat (again!) or that little Dylan took daddy’s bong to class for his “found art” project or that the SMA found a pop-up illustrated Tantric sex manual in the used book bin at Borders or – stop me before it gets interesting!
Speaking of illustrations, I do like that idea, as private musings go. In Thackeray and Dickens’s day, sketchbook diaries were a popular art form with readers, too, that is until photography began to put a crimp in the style. And in the twentieth century Erik Satie proved that marginalia in the manuscript can sometimes be livelier than the notes on the page. As for the SMA, I think, he, and we, might enjoy it, schedule permitting.
What might be fun would be a diary “from the set” in this vein. Then the jottings would have more of a focus, a story to tell, and not just be about one’s choice of breakfast cereal. Those of us who are interested in the process might learn something they don’t teach in film school and even if we don’t well, if he’s half trying it’s bound to amuse (imagine if we'd had a “behind the scenes” of TCA or TOP and you’ll see what I mean). In any case it might be as close as we’d get to autobiography. (I know none of this is bound to happen, but don’t interrupt my fantasy, LOL!)

I hope he lands on his feet (and makes more $ elsewhere). Seemed to me like a prince of a guy, and anyone who loves not just TCA but good film criticism would have to tip their hat to him for this one. www.salon.com/ent/movies/review/1999/08/11/crown/It’s rare that a review perfectly encapsulates the experience, matches the film in style, and gives you such a contagious sense of the writer’s enjoyment. Hard as I was concentrating on the screen <wink> he came up with more insights than I did, for sure, on first viewing. Made me want to go back and buy another ticket to see what I missed. Sheesh, if salon.com has to get rid of some excess baggage why don’t they jettison TV / wanna-be social critic Heather Havrilesky? Her writing defines disposable. Sometimes the lady can be good (not as funny as she thinks) but she can also sound as bubble headed as the shows she snarks at. A second career as a reality TV hostess or maybe writing medium cool chick lit might be worth pursuing. Sorry for the digression, but this just got under my skin.
