Irish Independent July 14, 2003
Movie stars come out to shine at the film fleadh
IF you found yourself in Galway last week, you weren't seeing things if you thought you spotted Pierce Brosnan browsing in a book shop, Colm Meany sipping a cappuccino or Neil Jordan buying a postcard.
The stars had gone west and the real surprise at this cinematic hooley was the absence of the ubiquitous Colin Farrell, a no-show at the premiere of yet another film he's in, Intermission.
But with the rest of the cast and crew including Cillian Murphy, the aforementioned Mr Meany, Michael McElhatton, director John Crowley, writer Mark O'Rowe and producer Neil Jordan on hand, who missed him? Even Gaybo was there. But then again Mr Byrne had a very good reason to be there.
He was attending the Galway Film Fleadh's opening film, the Irish premiere of John Deery's electrically controversial Conspiracy of Silence, which features the hitherto unsuspected thespian talents of the godfather of Irish talk television.
Less than a week long, it may be one of the shortest film festivals we have, but the 15th Fleadh somehow managed to squeeze in over 70 features, world premieres, Irish premieres, 102 short films, documentaries, animations, public interviews, seminars, business deals, gossip, celebrities a-plenty and even an acting masterclass with 007.
At a time when there is a heavy question mark hanging over the industry's future with the end of our tax-based incentive, Section 481, on December 31, this year's festival came out with its boxing gloves on to prove to our decision makers how short-sighted this move will be.

Nice to see he still has got that black leather jacket I like so much on him... I liked the interview. More Irish in his voice, that hearty laughter and he's cracking jokes. Know what I miss though? No one asked him to sing. However, I was sorry to hear the comments on Grey Owl. It's such a good movie.

Yes PB still seems to be smarting over over-hearing Richard Attenborough refer to Grey Owl as "a disaster" and in turn now self mockingly saying "maybe it didn't fly because it was a turkey". ;D It was sadly financially a turkey, but that was because Sony/ Columbia buried it and wouldn't release it thinking no one would be interested in it.
But I also liked the film, quite a bit. Yes it's leisurely paced and too slow for many but PB gives an excellent central performance of a very interesting character and the time and place is beautiful realized. It's work he should be very proud of. Whatever faults the film has PB's performance isn't one of them.
Oh and I think this was the first time I heard him say he messed up his back riding and jumping a horse pre-Goldeneye.
His story on him and Cassie moving furniture to hide the fact that they already had central heating after taking out a loan on the house to get some so they could use that $ to got ot America... very very funny!

Yes, PB is a great storyteller. Another thing that seems a bit strange to me: I can't understand why he refers to Stu Dunmeyer as a "nerd" and a "jerk". I always saw the character as very caring and kind.
