Pierce Brosnan to do a cameo in Teen Patti Kolammal Shankar [February 3, 2009, 2:41:38 PM]
Is it raining Bollywood everywhere? Or is it just the East-meets-West season? Whatever be the scenario, Bollywood is steadfastly going global in all areas of film-making. And Teen Patti, Leena Yadav Bajaj's film on casinos and gambling, is yet another big name in the East-meets-West genre.
Teen Patti, a high-stake gambling film, has roped in Hollywood actor and ex-Bond Pierce Brosnan to do a cameo in the film. Based on a true story of a group of MIT students who mastered the art of card counting and bankrupted millions from numerous casinos in Las Vegas, the movie has Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan, R Madhavan, Raima Sen and many others in it. It is reported that Brosnan's scenes were shot entirely in Oxford, U.K. and the film kick-starts with his cameo appearance.

Teen Patti is not big because of Brosnan and Big B, but also because of Jon Harris. Yes, the guy who edited Guy Ritchie's flick Snatch has been roped in to editing for Teen Patti.
With Brosnan and Harris, Teen Patti is already making waves. Hope Teen Patti and its gamblers have the potential to loot the box office also.

The U.S. film 21 was a film of this same plot. But then U.S. films are always doing their own remakes. I wonder when he was in the UK recently to do the cameo -- maybe when he went to Spain in Dec to do the Visionlab commercial.

07 February 2009 @ 11:43 pm IST There are chances of former James Bond Pierce Brosnan making an appearance in Amitabh Bachchan starer Teen Patti. Bollywood seems to be becoming the hottest destination now for Hollywood big stars what with stars such as Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger already sharing screen space with Akshay Kumar in Kambakht Ishq.

While producer Ambika Hinduja wasn't willing to offer her comment in this regard, our source stated, "Pierce Brosnan has been approached for a cameo part in the film. His sequences will be shot in the UK. Much of the rest part of the film has been completed."
Teen Patti is rumoured to be inspired by Kevin Spacey starrer '21′ which was released in India in 2008. The whole plot is the same and the only difference is that '21′ was shot in Las Vegas while Teen Patti has been shot in Mumbai and the prestigious Flame College in Pune. Big B steps into Kevin Spacey's shoes as a professor who teaches his students the art of gambling. The makers of the film are denying any resemblance to 21.
Amitabh Bachchan heads the cast comprising R Madhavan, Raima Sen, Shakti Kapoor's daughter Shraddha, Jackie Shroff and Mahesh Manjrekar and a few debutantes. There are several cameos in the film including Ajay Devgan, US model Saira Mohan, Danny Denzongpa, and Sushmita Sen
(RealBollywood.com) So it looks like he hasnt done his scenes yet, and i dont live far fron oxford, yippee! Mel x

My favorite Indian restaurant in town has a big screen TV and there’s always a Bollywood movie on. Most of the time it looks like Mamma Mia! in saris instead of spandex to me but on one lucky night I recognized the actual movie. They were showing Lagaan, a very engrossing Oscar nominated epic that I had rented on DVD from the library. I was telling my husband about the plot (basically the arrogant and eccentric captain of a British regiment says he will exempt a poor village from a triple tax, the lagaan, if the locals can beat his men in a game of cricket). The owner of the restaurant was waiting on our table and he overheard me and we had a nice chat about what a good film it was. We watched it for about an hour and when we got our bill for the food it was half price. I offered to pay it all but the manager waved us off saying how happy he was we enjoyed the film. Hmm. Maybe if they show Teen Patti I can impress him again. “Oh, that’s the one with Pierce Brosnan in a cameo!”

The best reason possible for PB to do this cameo -- potential half off dinners. I've heard good things about Lagaan - it's now moved up on my list.

PB supposedly declined and Richard (all is forgiven by India) Gere is now in.

Isn't there another movie where Richard Gere replaced PB? I guess these two must be up for the same parts often, which is so strange to me. I know the pool of over-50 actors is limited, but still.

Gere did Richard (The Matador) Shepard's The Hunting Party though the part was offered to Pierce first (he turned it down b/c he didn't want to go on location again. so soon after finishing 3 films in a row in 2006.
Pierce replaced Gere in Seraphim Falls when Gere took another film (The Flock) for a bigger payday.
There might even be more instances since most casting choices/changes rarely hit the press. I never knew Pierce was the first choice for the Coen's Oh Brother Where Art Though until Clooney mentioned it recently in an interview.

I never knew Pierce was the first choice for the Coen's Oh Brother Where Art Though until Clooney mentioned it recently in an interview. Actor Bruce "The Chin" Campbell, who writes funny books about his misadventures as a cult B-movie actor in Hollywood, wrote one called "Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way" where he's in a rom com with Richard Gere directed by Mike Nichols. It's an inspired bit of book casting, playing against the contrast of BC's constant attempts to impress everyone (and juice the film and his own role in it as a doorman / "relationship guru") and Richard Gere's sockless Buddhist serenity. It's a distracting book, though, because I kept imagining all the ways it could be funny, maybe funnier, if Pierce Brosnan starred in it, LOL! I checked Richard Shepard's website and no sign of a Matador sequel. <sigh>

I was thinking about this earlier (it was either that or work), and I realized that the one movie in which I have a hard time imagining Richard Gere replacing PB is Seraphim Falls. I can picture Richard Gere in any other PB film, even The Matador. His performance wouldn't be as good or as iconic, but I could picture it. But Seraphim Falls seems too... I don't know, rough?

Lauryn, I think that the Chin was wise in his choice. He likes to steal scenes and his work would have been much harder against the SMA. Blooey, I also can't really see Gere in SF. There's a rawness and toughness to that role and in PB's performance that I can't see Gere doing. But actors can surprise us, PB surprised many by SF and Matador.
