by Peter Knegt
Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” led the always interesting, often non-sensical Satellite Award nominations, which were announced this morning. The film took 11 nominations, including best picture (drama), best director, and acting nods for Leonardo diCaprio and Marion Cotillard.
While the awards - handed out by International Press Academy - are generally disregarded as a serious Oscar precursor due to their often inexplainable decisions (see this year’s bizarre move to erratically extend most categories to seemingly whatever number of nominees they wanted), this year’s batch is definitely full of worthy nominees, particularly from the specialty sector.
Of the ten nominees for best picture (drama), seven hail from specialty distributors - “127 Hours,” “Animal Kingdom,” “Blue Valentine,” “Get Low,”
“The Ghost Writer,” “The King’s Speech” and “Winter’s Bone,” while “Cyrus,” “The Kids Are All Right,” “Made in Dagenham” and “Please Give” all got best picture (comedy or musical) nominations, alongside the oddly well-represented “The Other Guys.”
Other welcome decisions included acting nominations for “I Am Love”‘s Tilda Swinton, “The Ghost Writer”‘s Pierce Brosnan, “Please Give”‘s Catherine Keener and “Animal Kingdom”‘s Jacki Weaver.Surprise omissions (if there can be such a thing as a “surprise” here) included favorites like “The Kids Are All Right”‘s Mark Ruffalo (though both Annette Bening and Julianne Moore got nominations), “The Fighter”‘s Melissa Leo and Mark Wahlberg, “The King’s Speech”‘s Helena Bonham Carter, and “Made in Dagenham”‘s Miranda Richardson. “Black Swan,” “Rabbit Hole” and “The Fighter” all were left out of the best picture category, while as-yet-unreleased films like “Another Year,” “True Grit,” and “The Way Back” altogether (though perhaps they didn’t see them, which is very likely in “Grit”‘s case though much less so with “Year”). Though keep in mind this doesn’t mean anything for the films’ eventual awards season chances.
Check out the entire list of nominations below. The winners will be announced Sunday, December 19, 2010. Last year’s winners included “The Hurt Locker” and “Nine” in the best picture categories, while Meryl Streep, Jeremy Renner, Michael Stuhlbarg, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Christoph Waltz and Mo’Nique all won acting trophies.
