Renowned primatologist Jane Goodall, Ph.D., DBE, took time out of her world tour to stop in Washington, D.C., for the second annual Jane Goodall Institute Global Leadership Awards Celebration on Friday, November 7 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. The Jane Goodall Global Leadership Awards honor the work and achievements of individuals and corporations that embody the Institute’s mission by taking informed and compassionate action on behalf of all living things.
The 2008 Jane Goodall Global Leadership Award winners include: U.S. Rep. Tom Udall (D-NM) for Excellence in Public Policy; Pierce Brosnan and Keely Shaye Brosnan for Responsible Activism in Media and Entertainment; and Green Mountain Coffee for Corporate Social Responsibility. Youth Leadership Award winners include Manoj Gautam of Kathmandu, Nepal; Emily Woodall of Banner Elk, N.C.; and Tayler McGillis of Toluca, Ill.
Upon accepting his award, Pierce Brosnan said, “Keely and I are honored to be in Washington, D.C., at such an exciting time in this nation’s history and to accept this award from our dear friend Dr. Jane Goodall.” The Brosnans were awarded for their demonstrated long-term commitment to environmental education and active support of Roots & Shoots, Dr. Goodall’s global environmental and humanitarian youth program.
Dr. Goodall, the evening’s keynote speaker encouraged her audience to, “develop respect for all living things and try to replace impatience and intolerance with understanding, compassion—and above all—love.”
The evening’s master of ceremonies, Anderson Cooper, host of CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, shares Dr. Goodall’s strong interest in Africa and the state of the environment. Academy Award-nominated actress Abigail Breslin and her brother, actor Spencer Breslin, were also on hand to help present the Youth Leadership Award.
