;D ;D ;D Lauryn, you're just too funny! Wait til you read this item (I snagged it over at PB Chat): Lara Croft beds James Bond? Date : June 27, 2007 Posted By : Clint Morris
I assume this is going to hit the trades any second now.
Word from within the weatherboard walls of Irish DreamTime Productions is that Angelina Jolie has been offered the chance to co-star with the company’s CEO, Pierce Brosnan, in the sequel to “The Thomas Crown Affair”.
Should Jolie sign on, it ain't a bad catch for a film that’s seemingly been stuck in the development stage for a couple of years now.
Brosnan told Moviehole a few months back that the new film is based on an old Peter Ustinov crime caper called “Topaki”. "(Topkapi) is much loved by people who love that genre of film, and it has a sentimental resonance to it. So we just took 'Thomas Crown' off the shelf, kind of dusted it off, and took 'Topkapi,' which is much loved, and is also in the canon of the MGM library, so it didn't cost us anything. This version of 'Topkapi' will have a different part, different woman, and different affair... and we're using wonderful locations."
Rene Russo got her kit off in the first one, so I assume that means we can expect to see Jolie both naked, snorting coke from Brosnan’s chest AND walking on a trapeze in this one?

Angelina Jolie Breaks Into "Topkapi"From Dark Horizons Angelina Jolie has been apparently been offered the chance to co-star with Pierce Brosnan in his sequel to 1999's "The Thomas Crown Affair" reports Moviehole. Based on the classic 1964 Peter Ustinov heist flick "Topkapi", the original follows a small time crook living in Greece who ends up playing both sides as he works for both the Turkish authorities and a gentleman thief determined to steal a jewel-encrusted dagger from the famed palace in Istanbul. Brosnan told the site a few months back that "(Topkapi) is much loved by people who love that genre of film, and it has a sentimental resonance to it. So we just took 'Thomas Crown' off the shelf, kind of dusted it off, and took 'Topkapi,' which is much loved, and is also in the canon of the MGM library, so it didn't cost us anything. This version of 'Topkapi' will have a different part, different woman, and different affair... and we're using wonderful locations." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Okay, my excitment for this sequel was just killed. I'm not sure I wanna know more about it, yeesh.

Don't be put off by all this. Pierce wasn't talking about any specific leading lady in any of these quotes. They just pulled them from other articles and pasted them in.

From Cyberhermit: Pierce Brosnan, Angelina Jolie In “Thomas Crown” Sequel? Not LikelyJune 28th, 2007 There has been a great deal of talk swirling throughout the cyberverse the past two days regarding Angelina Jolie joining Pierce Brosnan in a sequel to “The Thomas Crown Affair.” As the story goes, the sequel will be an adaptation of an old Peter Ustinov crime caper film called “Topkapi.” The original plot and story would be adapted for the Thomas Crown character. There have been some variations on the report. Some have Angelina signing the contract in Prague while filming her latest movie. Some have things only at the discussion stage. Some have the role offered with Angelina considering. Some have everything signed, sealed and delivered with production set to begin in Egypt and Russia. Apparently, Moviehole “broke” the original story and much of the ‘verse latched onto it with all the appetite of voracious wild boars. Many sites running with the story are sites I have respect for. Of course, much of the interest was driven by NC-17 to X-rated visions of Angelina Jolie and Pierce Brosnan engaged in lustful activities and romps such as those Rene Russo shared with Brosnan. That is apparent from such headlines as ,”LARA CROFT TO BED JAMES BOND.” The idea of Angelina Jolie reclined naked in a beach chair has appeal, great appeal, but … I have spent much of the last day and a half trying to find one reliable, corroborative source for this story … and failed. In fact, I discovered just the opposite. I have been informed by more than one source that not only has Angelina Jolie not agreed to the film, but that she would not do the film. Period. One source even informed me that, to their knowledge no one, not even Angelina Jolie, had been offered the “leading lady” role yet. So, you decide what you want to believe. As for me, while I would not mind seeing a Brosnan-Jolie coupling in the movie, I do not see it as a very good probability.

I have spent much of the last day and a half trying to find one reliable, corroborative source for this story … and failed. That sounds very reassuring. I don't mean any disrespect for Angelina Jolie, but what these reports outlined is not what I'd expect from the movie. At least the movie got some publicity and we got laughs out of it.

Aside from the lamentable writing (er this would be a sequal to his film, not McQueens) and the more than questionable conclusion, this is an interesting tidbit and I hope he gets his way because it's a great elite sport and fits Crown wonderfully.

An Equine line . . .
Actor Pierce Brosnan has been champing at the bit to play polo in his next project: a sequel to the Steve McQueen/Faye Dunaway hit "The Thomas Crown Affair." Now you know what the former James Bond is up to . . . trying to play James Bond again.

According to what? It's still listed as ongoing on his site under IDT Projects/News.
The issues which might affect it would be the upcoming writers strike in Oct (and unless they hold off for the upcoming actors strike next Spring and join them). Studios are juggling projects behind the scenes like crazy to make sure they have enough time to film before being interrupted by the potential strikes - and have enough films to release after their supply gets cut by the strikes. And that MGM is restructuring it's financing and maybe finding new financing partners - but that's for all it's studio films from The Hobbit, to Bond to Terminator. But neither of those issues are film specific, they're industry/studio issues.

For what it's worth rumors from Mviehole www.moviehole.net/news/20070828_topkapi_showing_signs_of_life.htmlTopkapi showing signs of life Date : August 28, 2007 Posted By : Kirby Kegar It’s full speed on the long-gestating “Thomas Crown Affair” follow-up, “The Topkapi Affair” with word in this evening that casting has begun on the Pierce Brosnan starring movie. In the movie, Brosnan’s Thomas Crown will be after the Kasikci Diamond which is kept in the Topkapi palace in Istanbul. "The film will shoot on location in Turkey, with many local actors – and extras – required for the pre-strike shoot", says our scooper. We’re told the script is fantastic. It’s based on the book Light of Day and “will please fans of the first movie but also newcomers to the series”. Brosnan knows this is his shot at creating a new long-running character so he’s gone all out on making it as good as it can be - it seems. Also, Angelina Jolie has finally reached a deal to play Pierce Brosnan’s leading lady in the movie. I love Jolie. I think she’s great. And let’s admit, she’s got a lot more up there than the foxy Rene Russo – who was topless for half of the first movie – does, so if they’re thinking of getting her kit off for the film (and no doubt they are), they’re going to need extra big buckets at the theatre. It’ll be explosive, to say the least. Having said that, Ms Pitt has had a string of rotten eggs lately (what was that last one? “A Mighty Heart”?), so she’s probably not exactly the casting coup the film - which nobody seemed keen on financing there for a while - needs. Still, I can see Brosnan and Jolie together. It could just work... especially if the script is as strong as we're told it is. Thanks to 'Beans'

Variety: Pierce plays polo in 'Topkapi Affair' - Actor saddles up to produce and star in filmBy LIZ SMITH IF YOU see people playing polo in the next Pierce Brosnan movie, know that the actor has had his way with MGM. Brosnan is calling the movie "The Topkapi Affair" and he is producing and starring. He isn't sure about his own horsemanship, however. Says he once played polo in a movie about the life of Nancy Astor but is not sure he can remember how to ride a horse, let alone swing a mallet at the same time. ========================================================= Yeah must be really hard to remember how to ride a horse, all the way back to January. I'm starting to think that reporters just don't get self-deprecating humor. Coordinating the mallet though is as he says another issue.

According to this Dutch news report Paul Verhoeven is to direct TCA2. Not a name I would have suspected, but at least his latest film was the very acclaimed WII spy/sex/thriller Black Book. Though he's also made Robocop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers & Basic Instinct (and dear god Showgirls!). Even at his best he often seems to tend toward the violent and the sleazy. He can do fast paced, he can do complex, he can even do smart and biting social commentary (mostly in his Dutch non Hollywood films) but can he do elegant and charming? (then again did McTeirnan pre TCA?)

I'm not sure, but I think the article says that filming is delayed because of the writers' strike. Just guessing of course, as I do not speak Dutch. Verhoeven.... Hmm, I don't want to be disrespectful to him, but usually at the mention of Basic Instinct I just run away.

We probably have to give Verhoeven credit for Basic Instinct being any good at all considering it had an Esterhaus script -- and just look at how pilloried the sequel was. Still that's not the movie I want to think about when I think about TCA2.
I think the article is assuming the writers strike will affect it. But the film already has a finished script (probably more than one, LOL) and MGM has supposedly set a Feb start date for the film which would have the film completed before the potential actors/directors strike in June 2008. Hollywood is not shutting down because of the writers strike, there's a huge block of films set to be made and pushed before the "bigger" strike date.
As for now TV is more affected than film. The sticky part for films is that writers aren't available for tune ups/re-writes for scripts in production. With directors like Verhoeven who wrote his last film Black Book (and a couple of others) , they'll probably be doing their own re-writes (and directors do that all the time who aren't writers)

A longer article that also mentions potential problems with the strike as well as Angelina Jolie. It doesn't make clear whether Verhoeven mentioned Jolie or that's just the writer adding to the article with more information that believe to be correct. (the later seems to be the case from the translation I red but they're poor translations)

Variety: Verhoeven set for 'Crown' sequelBrosnan will reprise role in MGM feature By TATIANA SIEGEL Paul Verhoeven is set to helm "The Thomas Crown Affair 2" for MGM. Pierce Brosnan will reprise his role as the world's most debonair thief and corporate raider in the sequel, which is set to begin shooting in January. Rene Russo will not return as Crown's love interest. Instead, the follow-up to the 1999 film, which was a remake of a 1968 Steve McQueen-Faye Dunaway starrer, will feature a character named Nadia Badri as the new female lead. That role is uncast. Latest installment is set in Europe and the Middle East and centers on Crown, who becomes entangled in a centuries-old feud and must decide how much he's truly willing to risk for love. Brosnan is producing alongside Beau St. Clair and Dino Conte. Verhoeven's involvement signals that MGM has committed to a big-budget picture, which will be shot on location in Europe. The Dutch director most recently helmed the World War II drama "Black Book." His credits also include "Starship Troopers" and "Hollow Man."

Hollywood Reporter: Verhoeven gets next 'Affair' in order By Carly Mayberry
Nov 13, 2007
Paul Verhoeven is coming back to Hollywood.
The Dutch helmer is set to direct the sequel to 1999's "The Thomas Crown Affair" for MGM. It will be his first American film since 2000's "Hollow Man."
Now titled "The Thomas Crown Affair 2," the film is based on the 1964 MGM film "Topkapi" and the novel "The Light of Day" by Eric Ambler. The project has been in development since 2002.
Set in Europe and the Middle East, the story revolves around the adventures of Crown as he becomes entangled in a centuries-old feud and must decide how much he's willing to risk for love.
Pierce Brosnan, who is producing the film through his Irish DreamTime shingle, is set to reprise his role as the self-made billionaire.
Verhoeven quickly made Hollywood's A-list of directors with 1990's "Total Recall" and 1992's "Basic Instinct," but after movies like 1995's poorly received "Showgirls," his status fell. After returning to the Netherlands, his career was revived after he received critical acclaim for last year's2006's "Black Book."
Verhoeven is repped by UTA, manager Marion Rosenberg and attorney Tom Hansen.

MGM Press Release: Paul Verhoeven to Direct MGM's THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR 2Wednesday November 14, 12:33 pm ET Second Installment of THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR franchise to be produced by Pierce Brosnan's Irish DreamTime Productions LOS ANGELES, Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Continuing to place high priority on building out its own tent pole franchises, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. has signed Paul Verhoeven to direct the highly anticipated romantic thriller THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR 2, the second installment in MGM's highly successful THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR franchise. Rick Sands, MGM's Chief Operating Officer, made the announcement today. The next installment of the Thomas Crown franchise sweeps across Europe and the Middle East as Crown becomes entangled in a centuries old feud and must decide how much he's truly willing to risk for love. MGM and Irish DreamTime will produce THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR 2. Brosnan and Beau St. Clair will serve as producers for Irish DreamTime along with D. Constantine Conte. The start date of production will be determined shortly. "THOMAS CROWN is a rich blend of dramatic tension, high adventure, romance and just the right touch of humor," said Sands. "Paul's body of work demonstrates his ability to deftly combine those elements while telling a story that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. His directorial talents complement Pierce's portrayal of the Thomas Crown character and we're all looking forward to an engaging and entertaining film." St. Clair said, "MGM came to us after the first film with the idea that Thomas Crown was an intriguing, modern character worthy of a franchise. So Pierce and I talked a lot about how to continue his story in a different and surprising way. Given our ambitions, to put Crown in an international setting with a bigger set of challenges, we couldn't have found a more ideal director than Paul Verhoeven." Added Brosnan, "Paul is on board to make a sexy, intelligent film and we're very pleased to be working with him and also pleased to be continuing our partnership with MGM." "I love to tease the audience, to challenge their expectations for characters and storylines," said Verhoeven. "This movie provides an incredible opportunity to push and pull the audience, whether through intense action and suspense or light-handed humor. I'm very much looking forward to working with Pierce, his Irish DreamTime team and MGM/UA." Recognized for his provocative and often controversial directorial vision, Verhoeven's most recent film is the critically acclaimed BLACK BOOK. Previous work includes the box office smash hits BASIC INSTINCT, TOTAL RECALL, ROBOCOP, STARSHIP TROOPERS and HOLLOW MAN. The Dutch director first came to prominence in the U.S. after his World War II drama SOLDIER OF ORANGE and THE FOURTH MAN, a mixture of film noir fatalism and supernatural forebodings.

Well sleaze I can do without, but a little dirtier sex I wouldn't mind. I'm really wondering who they'll get for the role of Nadia. Just the description of her narrows down the field to at least IMO more European or Middle East dark haired beauties. If you add in some degree of popularity/fame and an age probably between 30 and mid 40s (yes I know he's older but this is Hollywood and MGM is paying) and aside from Jolie (the biggest name as far as press is concerned) I can think off the top of my head maybe two others: Monica Belluci and Famke Janssen. Both also have the required earthiness/sex appeal that the role if it's anything like the original film requires. Of the two Famke is the much better actress in English and she's Dutch like Verhoeven which might give her another in.
