uk.reuters.com/article/domesticNews/idUKTRE50001320090101LONDON (Reuters) - The film of the Abba-themed musical "Mamma Mia!" has become the biggest ever selling DVD and the first movie disc to top five million sales, the Official Charts Company said on Thursday. The DVD success crowns the movie's lucrative run at the box office, where it earned more than 69 million pounds to be one of Britain's highest ever grossing films. The movie attracted an enthusiastic older female audience for its feel-good recreations of Abba classics belted out by Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Julie Walters. Only released on mid-November, the DVD sold just over five million copies, taking it past the 4.7 million racked up by the previous all-time best seller, "Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl." Also benefitting from the "Mamma Mia!" effect was the film's soundtrack, which sold a million copies to become the year's best-selling compilation. The Swedish pop group's greatest hits album Abba Gold also joined in the party, with sales of 410,000, making it the year's 19th best selling album. The year's second most popular DVD was Batman movie "The Dark Knight," which sold 1.5 million copies. In third place was another female-friendly DVD -- the film version of the hit U.S. series "Sex and the City." Walt Disney-Pixar animated adventure "Ratatouille" was the fourth biggest hit DVD of the year, with magical fantasy "Stardust" coming fifth. Online retailer Amazon said the Mamma Mia DVD had been its best selling item in the UK this year, beating JK Rowling's Harry Potter spin-off "The Tales of Beedle the Bard." 'Mamma Mia!' Britain's biggest-selling DVD everJanuary 1, 2009 "Mamma Mia! The Movie" is the biggest-selling DVD in Britain, the Official UK Charts Company announced Thursday, despite it being released only five weeks ago. The film version of the stage musical based on 1970s Swedish pop group ABBA's hits became the first DVD to sell more than five million copies in Britain. The all-time chart covers all sales from the launch of the DVD format in Spring 1998 through to the end of 2008. It showed that "Mamma Mia! The Movie" had overtaken "Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl", which has sold 4.7 million copies in Britain. The musical was also the fastest-selling DVD ever in Britain, shifting 1.669 million on its first day of sale. "Mamma Mia! The Movie", which stars Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, last month overtook "Titanic" to become the highest-grossing film in Britain, with a turnover of more than 69 million pounds (101 million US dollars, 72 million euros). "Right from its release, 'Mamma Mia!' has been a record breaker," said Official UK Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot. "This latest landmark further underlines the popularity of the movie, which is now 'officially' the British public's favourite DVD of all time -- with one-in-four British households owning a copy." The biggest selling titles in the 10 years of DVD are otherwise dominated by action-adventure films. Top 10 biggest-selling DVDs in Britain from 1998 to 2008: 1. "Mamma Mia! The Movie" 2. "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" 3. "The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" 4. "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" 5. "Casino Royale" 6. "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" 7. "The Shawshank Redemption" 8. "Gladiator" 9. "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" 10. Streep proud to represent 'old broads' Tuesday, February 3 2009, 06:50 GMT
By Sarah Rollo
Meryl Streep has claimed that film studios should be encouraged to cater to an older female audience.
The 59-year-old said that she is proud to still be acting "on behalf of all the old broads", pointing out that women over 40 were ignored by Hollywood boardrooms in the past.
Streep told the Radio Times: "I think with the success of a few big pictures like Mamma Mia! addressing an audience that, never mind being neglected, have been disdained in the boardrooms, there will be other films that target that audience.
"Mamma Mia! is that rare thing you can enjoy with your mother or your child, and its aim is only to make you happy.
"At 48 you were getting out the shovel ready to go in... I'm out there on behalf of all the old broads and I'm proud to be there."
Streep earlier revealed that she will sign up for a sequel to the record-breaking movie as long as her "fabulous boys" Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard and Dominic Cooper do the same.
Fingers crossed, Mel x

The Razzies: The best of the worst [...] Worst Picture: The Love Guru. Mike Myers’ unpopular comedy beat out such noteworthies as Disaster Movie, which for a while was #1 on IMDB’s bottom 100 (it currently sits at #17) and the German Director everyone loves to hate Uwe Boll’s latest bomb In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale.
Worst Actor: Mike Myers in The Love Guru. Usually Myers is a pleasure to watch, but it seems no one liked him in his latest outing.
Worst Actress: Paris Hilton in The Hottie and the Nottie. The public face of valley-girl skankdom is a pretty easy target for nose-thumbing: she beat out the entire cast of The Women (yes the entire cast was nominated in this category) to snag this award.
Worst Supporting Actress: Paris Hilton in Repo: The Genetic Opera. Score a twofer for Ms. Hilton. Some would probably call it an honor.
Worst Supporting Actor: Pierce Brosnan in Mama Mia!. Though I did not see Mama Mia! I know it was well liked, so if you’re a fan please keep in mind that this is a comment on Pierce Brosnan’s acting in the film and not the film itself. And please remember that I’m just the messenger. Usually I like Brosnan, but he can be a bit of a ham sometimes and he must have really hammed it up in this one. I did scratch my head a bit about putting him in a musical.
Worst On Screen Couple: Paris Hilton and either Christine Lakin or Joel David Moore in The Hottie and the Nottie. This is one of my favorite categories, since they often get quite inventive with the nominees (such as a couple of years ago when “Sharon Stone’s lopsided breasts” won in this category for Basic Instinct 2). I would have liked to have seen Uwe Boll and any actor, camera or screenplay take this one, but it looks like they’ve got it out for ol’ Paris (can’t say I blame them though).
Worst Prequel, Remake, Ripoff or Sequel: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This is the one category where I actually saw a couple of these movies. I’d like to commend them for nominating The Day the Earth Blowed Up Real Good (yes, that’s how it’s listed in the nominees). I had to go rent the original to erase the guilt I felt for attending the remake, but they get an even bigger kudos for honoring the biggest cinematic disappointment since Episode I. Indy Jones Kingdom of the Yada Yada is solid proof that George Lucas suffered some severe brain damage sometime between 1983 and 1999.
Worst Director: Uwe Boll for Postal, In the Name of the King: a Dungeon Siege Tale and 1968: Tunnel Rats. I have not seen any of Boll’s films (not in a big hurry there either) so I can’t ethically judge him off of his films. I can, however, judge him off of his public persona. Boll is often compared to Ed Wood. This is unfair to Ed Wood, who was a nice guy who just couldn’t discipline himself on his craft (though we probably wouldn’t remember him if he had) whereas Boll is mostly successful at coming off as an arrogant jerk who thinks way too highly of himself (he’s notorious for claiming he’s a genius who’s misunderstood by the ignorant masses). People hate him just as much for his image as they do for his films.
Worst Career Achievement: Uwe Boll. See above. [....]---------------------------------------------------------------- So what ... I did like him in Mamma Mia ! Cheers!

This movie is one of those that people secretly like but publicly mock, just because its the in thing, as it were. to be totally honest, when it came out in theaters, i was like "Omg, ya right like im going to sit thru and hour and a half of ABBA", and now i adore the movie! if it was so bad, it wouldnt have done so well.

Eh, it had nothing to do with his acting at all but rather the critical stance on his singing -- which frankly wasn't any worse than Firths and far better than Skarksgards but they're not famous enough to give a Razzie to. Also it did have to do with film, Razzie voters aren't exactly the target audience for it, most probably haven't watched it (or any film they vote on) but no way were they giving a Razzie to Meryl. Ditto on the not thrilled to be sitting through 90 minutes of ABBA but lo and behold I enjoyed the heck out of it - because of the exuberance of the cast - vocal chops or not.

Mamma Mia! 2 hits notes for Universal Posted By: Between the Lines at Feb 25, 2009 at 11:57:15 [General] Posted in: Business , Between the Lines Tags:Abba, Mamma Mia, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, UNIVERSAL
Rumours are growing that Universal is close to signing a deal for Mamma Mia! 2, an Abba-themed sequel to the most successful film ever at the UK box office. The movie made Universal £69.05m in Britain alone. Meryl Streep has blurted out her desire to work on a second film based on the musical, but could Universal double its takings if Pierce Brosnan promises he won't? mel x

I guess some were expecting him to deliver a Broadway Musical voice. That wasn´t the case, but who cares? The movie was wonderful (seen it about a dozen times), some fun for a change.
Catherine Johnson said this on an interview and I think it´s true... “You are going to ask me was that my note to Pierce Brosnan, aren't you! But the thing is, he can actually sing. Close your eyes and he is not off-key at all..."
Do those people have in mind that there are some pretty famous singers out there that have odd voices? Bob Dylan - who I can´t understand a word he says, Alice Cooper, Ozzie Osbourne (no offense to their fans). And there are more out there.
So, why give Pierce a hard time? I guess, for us fans, it does not matter, right?
Love to all.
