I so want to disucss the deleted scenes and commentary but I don't have my DVD yet. I really can't believe Shepard thought of cutting Julian's manipulation and confession, let alone actually did it and had to change it. It shows not only why Danny forgives him but how much Julian changes over the course of teh friendship. The "gees gees" -- what does that term derive from? And good on PB.

Don't know precisely but I wonder if it has something to do with the age old rider's commands "gee" and "haw" meaning "turn right" and "turn left" respectively. "Gee" or "gee-up" can also just mean "go (forward)." A quick check of Websters shows that "gee" first made its appearance in print in the 1620's, origin unknown.

Interesting. I just looked it up on google groups and there were these responses. The firstsimiliar to your dictionary one and the other an interesting extrapolation.
1) NSOED defines "gee-gee" as "nursery & colloq. A horse". [M19] "Gee" is also given as a word for horse. They derive from or are otherwise related to the interjection "gee!" [E17], "A word of command used to a horse etc.: go on, go faster, occas. turn to the right". There are a number of variants, such as "gee-up!", "gee-hup!" [M18], and "gee-ho!" [M17], all of them beginning with the /dZ/ sound. Perhaps these are primarily rightpondian words. They would appear to be unrelated to the more familiar (to me) and perhaps more recent "giddup!", "giddap!", "giddy-up!", which derive from "get up!" and begin with the /g/ sound.
2) The explanation seems obvious to me, so I'm probably wrong.
In the days when horses were as common as cars are now, and used as draft animals (as well as for leisurely riding, I suppose), what sound would a child hear when observing the horses at work? Answer: The driver's "Gee" and "Haw". He keeps calling the horse that, doesn't he?
Why do children call a dog a "bow-wow"? Because that's what they hear.

Makes sense. A couple of Brit-speak sites I checked identified it as having origins in "the nursery." Brits in adulthood do seem to revert almost back to the womb in some of their use of slang, e.g. playground stuff like "bagsy." "I bagsy (claim) the aisle seat."

I listened to the cast commentary last night -- FUNNY! And yes R rated like the film. Some of the non R rated remarks (at least taken out context) "You're a sick man Kinnear" "It's a sock puppet" "I hope you really don't look like that when you're having sex" "Her husband was waiting for me at my trailer" And we find out that Greg Kinnear is too hot for poor Hope Davis (literally) and that Pierce thinks his sniper rifle is sexy and his cigar most definitely is not. I can't decide if it's better buy the region1 or the region2 dvd because I'm not sure if on the region2 there really is Pierce and Greg commentary. The site you linked Ace tells there is but it seems they took the extras from the USA version because on Amazon UK is also listed an "alternate opening" that is not listed on the bbc site and that there isn't in the USA version.

Amazon UK seems to have old preliminary info. The BBC Film is very specific about the features in it's review. The Brit magazines Total Film and Empire both mention the cast DVD commentary and Total Film even discusses one of the anecdotes on the cast commentary. Channel4 in the UK also lists the cast commentary and descibes it in it's review. I think the alternate opening is one of the deleted scenes. I haven't watched them yet on my DVD though. From Channel4 BUENA VISTA HOME ENTERTAINMENT, 2006 Commentary by Richard Shepard Commentary by Richard Shepard, Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear Deleted and extended scenes 'Making The Matador' featurette Sometimes the fun that's had in making a movie bleeds through onto the big screen. Judging from the uproarious group commentary, The Matador is a film that benefited hugely from the boundless enthusiasm and bonhomie of the cast and crew. Rarely passionate when he was called on to speak about Bond, Pierce Brosnan can't keep quiet about the fun he had playing trysexual ("He'll try anything") alcoholic hitman Julian Noble. Richard Shepard throws in all manner of nice details and bizarre observations (he's obsessed with the joy department of the film's bullfighter) while former stand-up Greg Kinnear reveals expert comic timing when he pulls from his wallet a photo of Brosnan in just his pants and cowboy boots. Usually when a DVD comes with two commentary tracks you can expect repetition. Richard Shepard is both a great talker and a smart enough bloke to use his private chat track to discuss the things he couldn't cover when in Brosnan and Kinnear's company. It also emerges that Shepard isn't so dissimilar to the ignoble Julian Noble, exhibiting a sort of coy seediness that would be reprehensible were he not such good company. In addition to the commentaries, there's 15 minutes of cut material including a great scene in which Julian tries to pay an airport waitress for sex, a sequence that Shepard says was cut for tonal reasons. There's also a brief featurette in which everyone says the sort of things people always say in featurettes, only here their observations are peppered with swear words. We also learn that Shepard hopes people will return to the film again and again, not to appreciate the movie's artistic majesty but to allow him to retire early to Florida. Again, it's not the most attractive of comments, but after 90 minutes in the company of The Matador, you're as willing to forgive Shepard his social faux pas as you are Noble his misdeeds. ============================================= I don't know what Amazon in the US or UK charges to ship internationally, or what the custom costs are but the cost is now $14.89 for the film in the U.S., almost half of what the UK DVD is. So that might be a consideration. Also, you can order the US version with free shipping to Europe from Play.com has it for 25.99 in Euros which may or may not be cheaper when shipping is factored into the Amazon UK price.

Thanks Ace. In fact I had problems in deciding because I'm going to buy Goldeneye from amazon uk and Steele season 4and5 from either amazon us or amazon ca. So I wanted to be sure to buy the better version. Guess now I'm going to buy the region1 version since it's cheaper, I just must see if on amazon ca is even cheaper.

I've just checked and the canadian version seems to be different from the USA, and no extra is listed. So I'll go for the USA version. Ah, what about the alternate opening? Is there in the us version?

Currently on Amazon.ca it's CDN$ 23.96, that's more expensive (at least with the US/Canada exchange rate). Their Steele Season 4&5 is at CDN$ 48.99 so that's also more expensive compared to the current Amazon U.S. rates. At least not counting any shipping/customs differences.

I think the US and UK versions are the same except for the audio interviews (which are actually already linked from my Matador site from when they were first done). I haven't seen those mentioned in any UK reviews. The BBC doesn't mention "Alternate Opening" as a separate feature, so I assume it's one of the 11 deleted scenes. I haven't watched them yet.

There's no alternate opening on the U.S. DVD and the times for the deleted scenes at the UK Rating site don't correspond to the times on the disc. IE - the Birthday/sex club scene is not 4 minutes longer -- it's more like 20 seconds longer. But then the Uk Rating site listed only 8 scenes but there are 11 discussed on the UK Review sites.

This review from a UK viewer on Ciao mentions features that are descibed on Amazon.co.uk and not the US similiar ones mentioned on U.K. sites like the BBC, Empire and Total film. But from the date of his review July 5 he looks to have seen an advance copy. Very confusing. But... The back cover of the DVD that the Woolworth in the UK sells lists the same features as the U.S. one. Does anyone have the UK version yet? What exactly is on it?

Thanks So it looks like the same exact features as the US version except for the audio interviews. Looks like the Ciao reviewer got hold of an earlier version of the DVD they didn't use. Weird. Amazon.co.uk is still reporting that version though on their site. I wonder if it's costing them sales. Ace

Who cares? Them Brits got the better cover again! Actually if you want that cover you can got ot Borders in the U.S. and get it. This has to be one of the weirdest DVD releases ever. Different covers, changing features, some DVD rentals at Blockbuster with no special features... Ace

Any opinion yet on which deleted scens should have been cut? 11 deleted scenes and extended scenes DELAYED AT THE AIRPORT IN DENVER (3 MIN 56 SECS) ON THE WAY TO MEXICO (23 SECS) JULIANS BIRTHDAY NIGHT OUT AT THE SEX CLUB (37 SECS) JULIAN TURNS ON DANNY (1 MIN 59 SECS) JULIANS DISTRACTION AT THE OUTDOOR CAFE (55 SECS) JULIANS BUDAPEST ROMP (51 SECS) MR. STICK IS UPSET (2 MIN 38 SECS) BEAN REMEMBERS HER SON (1 MIN 8 SECS) JULIAN AND DANNY TRAVEL TO TUCSON 1st CLASS (31 SECS) JULIAN AND DANNY FLASHBACK (1 MIN 56 SECS) JULIANS NIGHTMARE VISION (43 SECS) I'd have loved to see the other 15 minutes they cut from the film since it was originally 30 minutes longer -- especially if it was of the quality of the deleted scenes given. Deleted scenes are usually mediocre, rubbish or throw away and you undertsand why they were cut. Here I can undertsnad why they were cut for pacing or tone but it certaintly wasn't for quality. SPOILERS for those who haven't watched them yet: I kind of agree with his reasons for cutting the DELAYED AT THE AIRPORT IN DENVER -- Julian seems to be beastly for no real reason. He was going to get what he wanted for free so no need to make it ugly. But the scene itself is great and I'm glad they included it. I really liked JULIAN TURNS ON DANNY. Pierce does some fantastic acting in this scene and it shows much more self awareness and self disgust in Julian and it opens up the day and makes it longer and layered. I know that they think it spoiled their perfect day but I think it's a shame it was cut. JULIANS BUDAPEST ROMP -- funny and even more disturing than in the film -- but I can see why it was cut and placed in the montage. JULIANS DISTRACTION AT THE OUTDOOR CAFE -- It's shame we lose an actual visual of Julian distracted by a pretty young man but the entire slow quacomole thing was not just weird but also vague and slow and it did ruin the pace of the scene between Julian and Danny. MR. STICK IS UPSET -- the numerous test audiences were wrong. This scene should have stayed, at least the ending with Mr Randy should have been kept it -- it shows not just later tells) us so much more of his character and loyalty to Julian. Shepard admits he regrets not keeping that last exchange in and he's right to regret it. BEAN REMEMBERS HER SON- I think Davis does a beautful job with her monologue but think enough of it remained in the film so that cutting this piece out didn't hurt but did indeed help the pacing. JULIANS NIGHTMARE VISION-- I just loved the rawness of it and wish they'd have been able to insert it in somewhere as a Julian delusion. In fact I think they could have used it at the front of the film when you know he's having a nightmare. JULIAN AND DANNY FLASHBACK-- Good stuff but agree with cutting the flashback, otherwise it would be too long for this late in the film and the scenes as it stands in the film says everything it needs to. All the little flying on the plane bits -- I really liked them and think they should have stayed. The juxtapoition of Julian in first class and Danny in coach, then both in first class but with Julian voraciously enjoying his dinner on the way to the hit and Danny with arms disapproving and crossed -- and both scenes feed into the last plane scene actually in the film with Danny all excited and eating.
