Scotsman interview with Gerry ButlerMarch 17, 2007 Excerpt concerning BOAW As well as 300, he has two more films due out soon. Butterfly on a Wheel is a thriller in which Butler co-stars with Pierce Brosnan and Maria Bello. "Pierce plays it dark, he really impressed me a lot," says Butler. "It's a very tight, intense story that involves a kidnapping and me having a nervous breakdown. For me it was so intense trying to keep that level of emotion going every day, while just getting over 300. I was on a massage table for a month coming into this film, then Pierce and I were in a car crash during filming. A rib came out, I had whiplash, so I spent the rest of the movie stressed the f*** out. I thought between 300 and this, that's enough, I don't need any more injuries.

Starry Constellation Magazine: Dustin MilliganWING SPAN by: Lisa Steinberg Q. What are the recent projects that you've been working on? A. Great question, pathetic answer, I am jobless right now. The only project I'm working on is the career of Dustin. I'm in LA right now auditioning and sort of trying to find something that will hopefully move me forward again. Q. What can you tell us about the premise for Butterfly On A Wheel and about your character? A. It's a thriller involving a kidnapping and a ransoming. I play Pierce Brosnan's son and I show up in inopportune moments in the story. I add a little bit of humanity to Pierce's character, he's the antagonist. The film is like a thriller involving romantic affairs and such things of that nature. Q. What made you want to be a part of the film? A. I am pretty new to all of this stuff so you want to be a part of everything you audition for. I had just gone out on an audition in Vancouver for this. When they offered me the role after I auditioned; you're not going to say no to working with Pierce Brosnan. Same with Maria Bello or Gerard Butler even if it was just for one day. It was fantastic; very wicked! Q. Was anything about your role challenging? A. It wasn't really that challenging, that particular role was quite small so it wasn't a whole lot. I basically had to play a young man talking to his dad, which is something I've done a few times! Q. Where do you draw your experiences from for your portrayals? A. You have to take one part reality, your own experience, on part imagination, making things up or guesstimation with as much information as possible about how a character would react in a certain situation. For me, as soon as you read about a character, you already start right away figuring what about that character you can do already. It's mainly from a lot of personal experiences, it's all over the place, to be totally honest, you can be inspired by anything. Q. Do you have a memorable moment from shooting the movie? A. Just when they yelled action and I had to start talking to 007 himself, it was just fantastic working with Pierce Brosnan, it was a pretty neat experience. Q. Were you intimidated at all? A. Not really but you're always a little bit intimidated but he was a really nice guy so that dissipated quickly. You kind of can't help it when you get the opportunity to work with bigger stars. I wasn't shaking too much; I hope. Q. Why should viewers take the time to check out the movie? A. Because I'm in it! Again, I think the director has really done something pretty cool with this story. It's going to be one of those exciting, good thrillers. I think that's enough for me to go and see it. Also, because I mentioned earlier, I am in it.

I see that Pierce just updated his letter on his web site as of yesterday, but there's no mention of anything about Butterfly on a Wheel in there. He mentions all his other projects though. Anything going on with that? I see IMDB shows an August release date in Belgium, but nothing listed for the US.

Lionsgate doesn't have a release date set for the US yet. I'd assume they'd have trailers etc out soon if it was to be released in August here as well.

Hi all, been visiting here for a while, I totally like this site. Since I'm so new, my name is Rose and I too am a huge Pierce fan, been one since I saw him in Manions of America. I think I was like grade 7 or so. Anyways, I've been working on a BOAW news fansite and one of the pages is BOAW. I've just revamped and renamed it to "Totally Hollywood Hunks News", check it out. ca.geocities.com/xenia_lady/F_Butterfly.html

Thanks! I hope this means they're about to release the trailer and actually attaching it to films that people will see in June and July. Lionsgate's recent track record for marketing and distributing films isn't that hot, but then the films haven't been either.

True, but Sony isn't the one releasing so hopefully it will get a wide release not like what happened to Seraphim Falls. (Can't wait till tomorrow to pick up a copy) And hopefully when a trailer is available, it will be available at Quicktime for all to see too, plus having a poster would be nice. Hehe

I doubt it but you never know. I'd be more confident of this release date if a) Pierce had mentioned it in his update just the other day. In fact he doesn't even mention BOAW at all b) Lionsgate had updated their site with any information on BOAW at all Mid Aug is only 2 1/2 month away and if they're going to release and market it in a non half arsed manner then they should have a trailer ready to go in a couple of weeks and start attaching it to or shopping it around to be screened with all the big films coming out now. Oh and a poster and a website would be nice too.

Variety: 'Orphanage' opens Sitges Fest runs Oct. 4-14[/url] By JOHN HOPEWELL, EMILIO MAYORGA BARCELONA -- The Sitges Intl. Film Festival of Catalonia, Europe's oldest and biggest fantasy fest, will open its 40th edition with Juan Antonio Bayona's admired chiller "The Orphanage," godfathered by Guillermo del Toro. Sitges will also stage an American Gothic retro, showcasing U.S. pics from the '70s and '80s; George A. Romero will receive a Sitges Time Machine award. Running Oct. 4-14, Sitges features a large spread of Spanish fantasy pics -- a testament to the genre's allure for both auds and young filmmakers in Spain. Barcelona mini-major Filmax Ent. contributes three titles: "Rec," a directorial mano a mano between Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza; Manuel Carballo's religious thriller "The Just"; and the daintily-animated toon pic "Nocturna," which is eliciting large blogger buzz in Spain. Sitges will also screen Oscar-nommed Nacho Vigalondo's time-travel romancer "Time Crimes," and Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego's rural manhunt thriller "El rey de la montana," which saw promising sales biz at Cannes. Produced by Rodar y Rodar, "Orphanage" played in Cannes Critics' Week. Fest's main Fantastic competish features Park Chan-wook's "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK," Tarsem Singh's U.S.-India fantasy drama "The Fall," and Mitchell Lichtestein's buzz-laden adolescent drama, "Teeth," a TWC-Lionsgate Sundance pickup. Fest showcases three other talked-about titles: Tom Shankland's gangland serial-killer thriller, "Waz," Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo's bloody French gore pic "A l'interieur," and Mikael Hafstrom's well-received hotel horror room chiller and Stephen King adaptation, "1408." Premiere, the sprocket opera's main out-of-competition sidebar, includes Mike Barker's "Butterfly on a Wheel," toplining Pierce Brosnan, Gerald Butler and Maria Bello.Of further parallel sections, Noves Visions bows with Robinson Devor's sensitive zoophilia study, "Zoo"; Anima't opens with a Japanese anime title, the delicately-animated urban kid buddy tale "Tekkonkinkreet". Crime action-thriller "Eye in the Sky," from Johnnie To screenwriter Yau Nai-hoi, kicks off Asian panorama Orient Express. Catalan Film & TV will host a Catalan Focus and three industry events: a Cine Regio European regional filmmakers forum, a Catalan Film Day, and an International Talent Campus.

The ofifical press release from the Stiges Festival site. Interesting that they categorize BOAW as horror thriller. The 40th anniversary’s image is dedicated to Blade RunnerEl International Film Festival of Catalonia will be opening its 40th edition with The Orphanage, by J. A. Bayona, produced by Guillermo del Toro. Sitges 07 will be an important showcase for Spanish fantasy productions, represented by movies like Rec, by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza; Timecrimes, by Nacho Vigalondo; El Rey de la Montaña, by Gonzalo López-Gallego; Los Justos, by Manuel Carballo, or the animated film Nocturna, by Adrià García and Víctor Maldonado, among others. In addition, the Official FANTÀSTIC Selection will include some of the season’s most awaited motion pictures like I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK, by Park Chan-wook; The Fall, by Tarsem Singh, or Teeth, de Mitchell Lichtenstein (one of the big winners at the past Sundance Festival). PREMIERE, an Official Category dedicated to out-of-competition fantasy genre films, will include Butterfly on a Wheel, by Mike Barker, a powerful horror thriller starring Pierce Brosnan, accompanied by Gerard Butler and Maria Bello. Two of the Festival’s most extreme proposals are European films: the Irish Waz, by Tom Shankland, starring Stellan Skarsgård and Selma Blair, and À l’intérieur, by Alexandre Bustillo and Julian Maury, screened at the past International Critics’ Week in Cannes and considered to be one of the bloodiest movies in recent French cinema. Another of the Festival’s big films will be 1408, the latest screen version of a Stephen King novel. Starring John Cusack and directed by Mikael Håfström (nominated for an Academy Award in 2003 for Best Foreign Motion Picture with Ondskan – Evil), 1408 has been described by critics as this year’s scariest ghost movie. The Festival will be dedicating a retrospective to American Gothic, North American horror movies from the 70’s and 80’s (in collaboration with the San Sebastian Horror And Fantasy Festival), with the attendance of one of the main representatives of this school, director George A. Romero (creator of the classic Night of the Living Dead), who will receive the Time Machine Award. In this cycle we will recover two films by the recently deceased Bob Clark and Dan Curtis, which are Dead of Night and House of Dark Shadows, as well as genre classics as important as Last House on the Left, by Wes Craven, or The Other, by Robert Mulligan. ANIMA’T will open with the Japanese Anime film Tekkonkinkreet, by Michael Arias, and NOVES VISIONS will open with Zoo (an experimental documentary by Robinson Devor revolving around the controversial subject of zoophilia, a film screened at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight) and will include other productions following in the line of auteur films, like Mr. Lonely, by Harmony Korine, and exploring the field of faux documentaries with Nos Amis les Terriens, by Bernard Werber. Gun Ghung (Eye in the sky), by Nai-Hoi Yau, produced by Johnnie To, will be opening the ORIENT EXPRESS category. The NOVA AUTORIA section continues to support new creators, with the sponsorship of the SGAE (General Society of Authors and Publishers); SEVEN CHANCES will be made up of seven proposals by critics, and EUROPA IMAGINÀRIA will travel through the universe of premonitions and future cities with films like Metropolis, by Fritz Lang, or Playtime, by Jacques Tati. BRIGADOON will pay tribute to Italian director Enzo G. Castellari, creator of movies like Inglorious Bastards or The Bronx Warriors. In addition to the usual sections, we will be dedicating a cycle to visionary director Damon Foster and there will be exclusive premieres for manga fans. CATALAN FOCUS will be changing its focus and will be made up of both films that are a part of the Festival’s official program as well as retrospectives dedicated to classics and figures from the Catalan imaginary genre. Catalan Films & TV, in addition to supporting the presence of the Catalan industry through the Catalan Focus section, will organize three main events: the yearly meeting of all European regions for audiovisual development, revolving around the Cine Regio platform; the holding of Catalan cinema day and the international co-production meetings & talent campus (from October 3 to 5 there will be a series of conferences bringing together producers, distributors, filmmakers and people in charge of European television stations with representatives of the Catalan industry). The Carnet Jove Jury, which is presently carrying out its selection process, organized along with the Catalonian Autonomous Government’s General Youth Department, once again this year will be giving the Award to the Best Motion Picture in the Fantàstic and Midnight X-Treme categories. The deadline for running as a candidate is July 15l (www.carnetjove.cat). The image of this year’s Festival is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Blade Runner. Visiting Sitges will be two of the people responsible for the visual genius of Ridley Scott’s movie, Syd Mead (one of the most important production designers in fantasy film) and Douglas Trumbull (in charge of visual and photographic effects).

Hey! I just saw this about 1/2 hour ago, was gonna post it! Great news eh? Could this be the World Premiere of "Butterfly" that we've all been anticipating? I mean the Variety one, other one, so exciting! After waiting and waiting for good news.

Selfishly I hope it's not the World Premiere. That would mean the film comes out later than mid October here. But it bodes well that it's a quality film considering what else they're planning to show. Lionsgate though has yet to release a trailer and you'd think they'd try and attach it to films like 1408 opening this weekend.

Yes, that's true. I did check Maple Picture release site and it isn't mentioned in there either. I'm starting to wonder if this pic will be doing the film festival circuit first before a wide release? But still, great news. Finally, some movement on this film!!!!!

I was looking at Pierce's updated (as of today) Timeline and it says: 2006 March 10– Principal photography on Shattered begins I really hope that's a huge typo and they have not renamed the wonderfully titled BOAW into Shattered. That's such a generic title -- so generic it's already been used several times and is being used for another film scheduled to be released this year. Edit: Gah! It's also changed in the Irish DreamTime section: In Spring 2006, Irish DreamTime went on location to Vancouver and Chicago to film Shattered. The film tells the story of an ambitious advertising executive (Gerard Butler), and his wife Abby (Maria Bello) bringing up their five year-old daughter, Sophie. Their seemingly perfect life unravels when Sophie is kidnapped. In the blink of an eye, Neil and Abby's safe and secure existence is turned upside down, and they are at the mercy of Ryan (Brosnan), who dismantles the family’s lives with brutal efficiency. This tense psychological thriller is directed by Mike Barker (Best Laid Plans, A Good Woman) and penned by William Morrissey. I really really hate studio bland-ification. Now it sounds like every other generic thriller. Bah. Not to mention my site now needs to be redesigned.
