When «Golden Eye» was released on big screen - the first James Bond film with Pierce Brosnan - he instantly became the highest grossing movie in history of James Bond films. «Tomorrow Never Dies», «The World Is Not Enough» and «Die Another Day» were followed after it. Since then, Brosnan received status the «Best of James Bond». However, evil tongues add to it «... after Sean Connery».
In May he will be sixty, but Pierсу still looks irresistible. And by the way, in spite of the world-famous he remained modest, heartfelt, and sensitive. Probably, because he experienced many difficulties and passed a thorny road.
Brosnan had participated a long time in small film projects and television shows, before he began to receive the big movie roles.
The father left a family when Pierce was no more than a year, and mother had to leave the baby with relatives to earn on life. His first love, actress Cassandra Harris, died from cancer in his arms, and left him with a son and two her children. When life is full of tests and losses, it teaches the person of endurance, but more important, the ability to be attentive to the sufferings of people around. Speak, to such people eventually should reward. Some people don't trust in it, but Brosnan's example proves otherwise. He is very happy in his second marriage, and his popularity continues to grow, and not only actor's, but also... as artist.
I happened to meet the Pierce in Venice where he represented comedy by the Oscar-winning Susanne Bier- «Love is all you need!». The actor was sitting on the cafe terrace overlooking the lagoon, on San-Marko Square and the famous work of Andrea Palladio - Il Redentore church. Athletic, tight, looks no more than 45, he radiated affability and friendliness.
ELLE Love it's really all you need, isn’t it?
Pierce Brosnan (pause). Perhaps not, but with age I come to idea that it is the most important thing in life, and more important than career. However love in itself is the short feeling if you don’t work over it constantly.
ELLE And that do you must to do?
PB Everyone has their own methods. For example, I wake up every morning, watch my wife Kelly and say to myself, "God, I love her so much!"
ELLE And is it enough?
PB Of course not. But this is the beginning! When our children were small, we divided sleepless nights. We often didn’t have enough energy and money, but we didn't despond and loved and supported each other. Such minutes are never forgotten, they unite people for the all of life. When you are happy, it is necessary to be able to hold strong the happiness and don’t forget to share it with others.
ELLE I always had the impression that the actors are fickle men. And what about lots of roles of heroes - lovers on the screen? How do their wives cope with jealousy then they see husbands in embraces another woman?
PB My wife calls my work «legal treason». So, if I play the hero hero – lover she has to put up with it because my fees feed my family (smiles). However, she mustn't worry about it. First, the actress with whom I work in the real life often have partners or husbands who are also jealously watch the darlings on the screen. Secondly, my wife - a large part of me that even if she is not near with me I always feel her presence. Besides, she and children often come on shootings to visit me. So even I’ll want to have a novel I will not have opportunity and time for this (winked).
ELLE Action of the Susanne Bier’s movie take place in the Italian South. Ideal place to fall in love...
PB In my opinion, you can fall in love in many other places. Everything depends on readiness and the degree of romance each people. Besides, the movie was made in Italy, but all film-making team spoke on Danish and only I was English speaking actor. But not for nothing everybody says that love doesn’t need interpretation.
ELLE Do you learn to speak Danish?
PB I can say (speak Danish): «You devilishly look good!»
ELLE You and your partner Trine Dyrholm play not the young heroes who show directly teenage feelings......
PB People want to love and be loved at any age. It doesn’t matter whether they are looking for love in aspiration to find self-confidence or they are independent, free and want to unite to divide happy life. Both are the love, which is necessary for survival. Love - a celebration of life.
Thank God, we finally realized it and don’t afraid to fall in love at any age - whether in 18, 30 or 70 years.
ELLE How to make a mash on woman?
PB It is necessary to love her. Really, from the heart, not for yourself, but for her. There is no such woman in the world that would not appreciate a loving her with all heart man.
ELLE Is that all? And what about courage, irresistibility and demonstration of all these kinds?
PB This is necessary to macho and boasters. I don’t need it for myself. I'm just a man who also does what men usually do, and which don’t need to demonstrate the imaginary kinds. In turn, I like intelligent women which don’t interesting in talks and promises and which interested in men who are capable of real feelings.
ELLE Did the person who has played the invincible and irresistible agent 007 really tell this?! Seems that roles of heroes-lovers made you fragile and sensitive...
PB A real man doesn’t afraid to look weak. His force consists in it. When I decided to become an actor I choose the way of open manifestation of feelings. To be the actor means that you can divide with the viewer the most intimate - that experience yourself. Pull out the feelings and expose them on a public even if it hard to do. Playing the Philip’s role in the film «Love is all you need!» who falls in love with a woman with cancer, I had to address to my own past when I sat at a bed of the dying wife, and recall the pain and horror of loss in my memory. Fortunately, the Susanne’s film is a comedy, so I had to find a balance between the past and the present project, where my partner wins ailment and is ready to open for a new love.
ELLE Do you miss James Bond , "the strong man" role?
PB I am proud that I was in a skin of the agent 007, entered into exclusive club of James Bond and become one of six actors whom had the good fortune to play this hero. I know that I’ll always be a part of this glorious, already semicentennial history and will impersonate Bond for a generation that watched my movies. But in life you have to think about everything philosophically: everything changes and must go further. James Bond entered into my life, visited it and left it. But It doesn't mean that I forever "gave up" agency role. At the moment I am working on a project where I play an agent again, but former agent (laughs). The movie is called «November Man» (the picture will be released in 2014. – ELLE note).
ELLE Did you fight for a woman?
PB I have never looked for quarrel and fights. I resorted them only in urgent cases.
ELLE What kinds do you like in women except intelligence?
PB Erotic. However, I note that sometimes not the most beautiful women have it. Women which have wholeness and inner charm have this kind.
ELLE Without what you can't imagine your life?
PB Without loss. Losses are the best teacher. In life it is important can win, but more important and more difficult can lose and study on own mistakes. The most valuable and great experience in my life brought me failures strokes of fate, and only for them I could make my temper hard and i understood my purpose in world. I also don’t want to live my life without emotion(when it is quiet and good). We need the ups and downs, moments of happiness and sorrow. Who among us wants to meet the sunset of own life with the feeling that nothing is happened?
ELLE How do you cope with strokes of fate?
PB long and lonely walks on the coast help me, but the main thing is painting which I began during an illness of the my first wife. When I have colour range and paints life again becomes meaningful.
ELLE What is the most unusual experience in your life?
PB When i started to sing in «Mamma Mia!» from big screen. I had and to dance in film «Love is all you need!» Thanks God, the family patiently appertain to my everyday training. It is true that girls sometimes twisted his fingers to their temple. But luckily, after both films critics didn’t attack me for my talents.
ELLE I watched you on screen a long time and I want to do the compliment to your style – classic, elegant, timeless. Have you got a good stylist?
PB All my life I choose suits to myself. And style for me doesn’t limit the elegant clothes. It is the ability to hold and certain human qualities and principles. Then I was young I watched the actors which style I liked. Among them, Cary Grant, Spencer Tracy, Sean Connery, Steve McQueen.
I watched idols, their mimicry, a bearing, gestures, clothes and repeated all of it. At some instant I understood that I can do it without their help, and now only on me depends that new I will add to my style.
ELLE This year you will sixty. How do you prepare for the anniversary?
PB Consciously feel the fact that my past is increasing day by day, and I must cherish present and that the future is already a little bit. I live with a sense of joy and gratitude for the fact that I live, think, breathe, for beloved woman near me, for that I gave a life to my children and I taught them to love, for that I played roles which found the viewer.
