INTERVIEW. For Closer, Pierce Brosnan reveals how he found the joy of life, after many hardships. He returns on November 8 in a thriller, "The Foreigner", and carries on his shoulders the new series "The Son" ...
You are the hero of a new series, The Son. In life, what kind of son were you?
It's a bit difficult to answer that question. When my parents separated, I was raised by my grandparents. When I died, I grew up with my aunts and uncles. I only really knew my mother when I was 11 years old. I only saw her for the annual festivals. I did not live in a traditional family, so my childhood was a bit peculiar. I quickly became an independent boy.
Did this childhood play a role when you became a father?
She is the reason why I have been so protective of my children. Aside from acting, having children is without a doubt the greatest thing I have done in my life. Being the father of my sons and my dead daughter [ Charlotte died of ovarian cancer in 2013, Ed] , and recently grandfather of a 2-year-old granddaughter, Marley, brings me so much joy. .. All my life, I tried to be the best father possible. I think I have spoiled them too much and not been severe enough with them.
Exactly from my childhood and from all the dramas that have marked my life. I probably should have tried to cover them less, to protect them less and to have more disciplinary measures against them. I should have also pushed them faster to go to work. In a way, I really believe they have received too much love from me.
What are your last two sons doing now?
The last, Paris, is in high school, and Dylan is a student at the USC Film School to become a director. My wife, Keely [Shaye Smith], is a brilliant and wonderful mother. She constantly pushes her children to surpass themselves in everything they do. I try to teach them a lot of things in life, but I have to say that my wife is an incredible educator who knows very well how to raise her children.
You talk with a lot of love and respect for your wife. After more than twenty years of living together, what is your secret?
It's just a wonderful person. I am always totally subjugated by her kindness, her kindness ... She feels a lot of compassion for others. We are very happy when we are together. I think it's the strength of our relationship. We are simply fulfilled and fulfilled when we spend time together. And I think we share the same philosophy of thinking that marriage was created to solve the problems of our daily lives!
What do you like the most about your wife?
She is a saint. When I met Cassie [Cassandra Harris, her first wife], I was just a father-in-law because she had two children from a previous union. I then had a son with her. With Keely, I had two children, but she welcomed mine as hers. We are a very big family, and last year I had wonderful Christmas celebrations with the whole family at the same table.
This quest for happiness has been long and fraught with tragedy, with the death of your first wife and daughter, Charlotte, whom you adopted ...
Cassie allowed me to be the man, the actor and the father that I am today. Until my death, she will be part of me. Over time, you simply learn to live and, if you are lucky, I say good luck, amazing to meet another wonderful person as was the case with Keely, you gradually resume life.
Now that your children are grown up, do you enjoy more of your life as a couple?
It's funny that you asked me this question because, recently, we went to the restaurant and it was weird to find each other just at a table sitting opposite each other. Our youngest children have become independent, and do not want to see us anymore! [Laughs] We now enjoy being alone together, but we are also very happy to have the whole family together at home.
After facing so many dramas in your life, where did you get the strength to find today the joy of living?
In my children and my wife. But, you know, you have no choice but to keep fighting to live. Whatever happens, you will suffer in one way or another, and that's the way you have to face the difficulties. In life, you have the choice to curl up and receive shots or you prefer to get up ... The main thing is not to leave bitter. No matter the suffering and the tragedies, you just have to take advantage of the moment by taking the days as they come.

Pierce Brosnan on Finding Hope After Heartbreak: "I Don't Look at the Cup as Half-Full" (EXCLUSIVE) Jan 24, 2018 1:19 pm By Closer Staff
Actor Pierce Brosnan has been married to his wife, Keely Shaye Smith, for 16 years, but they looked like newlyweds at the recent Concert on the Bluffs in Malibu, CA, hugging and kissing, holding hands, and telling each other, “I love you.” Pierce exclusively told Closer Weekly, “You have to trust and follow your heart.” He adds, “And try to meet the best people in life.” Clearly, Pierce feels like Keely is one of those people. “When Keely looks at me, I go weak,” he says. “I love her vitality, her passion. She has this strength that I wouldn’t be able to live without.”
Ex-journalist Keely, 54, helped Pierce, 64, heal his heart after his first wife, Cassandra Harris, died in his arms of ovarian cancer in 1991. Tragically, Cassandra and Pierce’s daughter, Charlotte Brosnan, succumbed to the same disease at 41in 2013. “I don’t look at the cup as half-full, believe me,” says Pierce. “The dark, melancholy Irish black dog sits beside me from time to time.” But Keely is always by his side. “She has been a supportive and wonderful addition to his life,” an insider tells Closer. “Keely is understanding of his past, is not threatened and is just a truly loving presence.”
In addition to Charlotte and his sons with Cassandra (Christopher Brosnan, 45, and Sean Brosnan, 34), Pierce has two boys — Dylan Brosnan, 21, and Paris Brosnan, 16 — with Keely. “My fatherly instincts are purely my own,” says Pierce, who only met his absentee biological father once, in 1984 when the star-making TV series Remington Steele was filming an episode in Ireland. “I had a Sunday afternoon with him — a story about this and that, a few pints of Guinness, and we said goodbye. I would have loved to have known him.”
Pierce has been a very different kind of father. “His kids are everything to him,” the insider says. “Being a father is a huge responsibility,” he adds. “But it’s a satisfying one.” He’s also a doting grandfather of three, including Charlotte’s children, Isabella Smith, 19, and Lucas Smith, 12. “They keep Charlotte alive for him,” says the insider. “They both have Charlotte’s kindness and wicked sense of humor.”
Work brings Pierce joy, as well. “I always wanted to do a Western,” he says, and his AMC cowboy drama, The Son, has been renewed for a second season. He’s also finished shooting Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (due July 20), a sequel to his 2008 hit musical with Meryl Streep. “I’d been asked over the 10 years since the first one, but it was a surprise when they said, ‘OK, let’s do it,’” Pierce tells Closer. “There’s actually more meat on the bones of this one.” There are also new co-stars, including Cher, his neighbor in Malibu. “Pierce adores Cher,” the insider says. “He had a hoot.”
But Pierce is the happiest when he’s home with Keely. “I’ve been a married man most of my life — that’s the way I like it,” he says. “I’m one of those guys who believes you need a strong woman in your life.” Keely certainly fits that bill. “I found a great woman in Keely,” Pierce says. “Not if I searched a million times over would I find one as good.” The feeling is mutual. “Pierce is intelligent, captivating and his real beauty emanates from the soul,” Keely says. “And, like a fine wine, he’s aging beautifully.”
As he’s weathered losses over the years, Pierce has attained hard won wisdom. “There are so many lessons you learn each day and each passing year,” he tells Closer. “It’s important to have good faith in yourself and to know yourself as much as you can, and then to go out there and do good things.”

In 30 years I took a loan and went to the States to seek fame and success — interview with Pierce Brosnan Nash Konston | August 10, 2018
Thursday, August 9, in the Ukrainian car started on the film Mamma Mia! 2. This is a continuation of one of the most popular musicals of the XXI century. The first part was published exactly ten years ago and gathered 615,7 million dollars! This is significantly higher than the acclaimed musical “La La land”, received seven awards “Oscar”. It charges in worldwide box office amounted to 446,1 million dollars.
Criticism probably will be a long time to disassemble Mamma Mia! the bones, trying to unravel the secret of popularity of this picture. We also think that her success has developed from several components. First, in the film, beloved by tens of millions of people around the world songs of the legendary Swedish band ABBA. They are the connecting components of the script of the musical. Secondly, it is a romantic Comedy — a genre that is always popular. Thirdly, in the film assembled a superb cast: Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, Dominic Cooper, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters…
Thanks to The Interview People “the FACTS” managed to obtain an exclusive right to publish in Ukraine interview with Pierce Brosnan (pictured with his wife). Mamma Mia! Enjoy!
— What felt when you were offered to star in the second part of the musical?
Joy. Sincere joy. I phoned and asked as I’m looking to do a sequel. I immediately asked in reply: “Meryl’s in?” They were assured that the Strip has given consent. And my “Yes” was the answer easily and with apparent willingness. And who can doubt it?! The first part enjoyed a stunning success that brought people so much joy. She entertained and touched the soul, and helped many sort out their personal problems.
— Both parts of the filmed songs of ABBA. Can you name the most important “Waterloo” in your life and the most important “Winner takes all”?
— Oh, heavens! What a question! Okay, I committed an act that could be characterized as “Winner takes all”, 35 years ago. Then I was 30, I got up the nerve and went to the Bank Manager. Asked to issue me a card with an overdraft facility by 2 thousand pounds, boarded the ship and went to America to seek his fame and success as an actor. Agree, it was a risky move.
— And your “Waterloo”?
— “Waterloo” in my life there have been a few (laughs). But I would like to keep it a secret. You need to seek for new and new heights, but how you do it, not for prying ears.
— All the same?
— If you want to know really, then wait a bit and buy my memoirs. There you will read all about my “Waterloo”.
— Seriously?! And when does the book come out?
— My God! Who for language pulled? I’ve only just begun. Everything is still in its infancy. Although I pondered it for a long time. Pushed case. I have a friend, mark Bailey. He recently wrote the book “the Life of nine of the Irish”. It collected the stories of nine extraordinary Irishmen. And each of these stories Bailey asked someone to write some sort of Preface in the form of an essay. He turned to me. I wrote about Rex Ingram. He was a Director in the silent era. He made the film “the Four horsemen of the Apocalypse”. For me it was absolutely new, unknown activity. Suddenly came up with an idea, and I invited Bailey to co-author my memoirs. “I want to break down on me?” — I asked. And he accepted the challenge.
So when will the book be released?
I don’t know! Here stuck. We are working on it. I tell: for me it is a new case. We meet once a week. Mark sits down with a laptop and writes what I tell him. And I ride like a fool around the room and remember. And my memories are jumping with me. Mark then returns home, tidy my nonsense and sends me. I read something correct. And we meet again. And so it works.
— What it’s like to arrange an audit yourself?
— Wonderful. Has, among other things, therapeutic effect. Mixed feelings. There is joy and melancholy. Past, present, future — everything is mixed. Still in may I turned 65. From this number, sometimes breathtaking.
— But you look great.
So far, so good (knocks his fist on the wooden table). I have a job, I still love what I do. And I have something to do, something to dream about.
Say, your sons to step on your toes. How do you feel about the fact that they decided to make a career in show business?
— Well, Dylan is 21 years old and he is studying at the University of southern California. Paris — a young man of 17 years. He is studying in Washington, another year and graduate. I don’t think they want to become actors. Yes, Dylan is a student of cinema. And Paris wants to do the same. But they like to tell stories, not play. And they do it pretty well. My boys a good style.
— But Dylan’s a male model, right?
Yes. He’s in the modeling business. And Paris too. Younger even like it more. Dylan refers to his work with irony.
— Hard to be a father of two such beautiful boys? Your sons are very attractive.
— It is, but they have a wonderful mother. She keeps the three of us in line. Besides, boys have their heads on their shoulders. Good head. They had the opportunity to observe his father. And shook their heads. They saw that the profession of an actor — not honey. And we always talked a lot. And continue to do so. Try to meet and have dinner together. We love to sit at the kitchen table. We are very close. I am sure that with my boys all will be well.
— What advice would you give your sons? About the actor profession or something else?
I repeat: they do not want to become actors. I directly asked them about it: “You want to play, to play on stage?” They answered evasively: “Maybe.” Then I said, “If Yes, then you should engage in serious self-education. Read more. A lot to read. And not just fiction. Need to know the history of mankind. As for fiction, you need to choose only good, real writers. Not all the trendy stuff. And still need to have the courage to go on stage and show people what you can do. Be open to them. And this is the most difficult. If you really want to become actors, need to find good teachers, takes a long time to learn this art. Read plays and see themselves in a role, to imagine how you’d played. And only then will become clear whether you have acting talent and whether there is courage.” And they got to thinking.
In the beginning of our conversation you mentioned Meryl Streep. Is it important for you to play with her?
— Of course. She’s a brilliant woman, an outstanding actress. Meryl gives himself to all in every role. And the audience can feel it. It fills all around. We are good friends. Love Meryl easily. To play with her too easily. Unfortunately, we were partners only in Mamma Mia! It’s an easy genre. And I really want to know what it’s like to play with Meryl in drama? I hope that someday it will. But our friendship so little experience of joint work is not affected. I’ll tell you honestly, that in the actor’s environment — a rarity. This should particularly appreciate. I bet even if we weren’t talking all these ten years, friendship between us would not have gone anywhere. It’s a sense of camaraderie. We would easily have been able to continue the conversation, which was interrupted in 2008.
— Meryl Streep is the only reason which has induced you to withdraw in the second part?
— Of course not. I have said that the film the audience liked. It gives good feelings. But not only that. I wanted to see again and other actors. Take Amanda Seyfried. Ten years ago, she was 21. In fact, she was still a child, talented, hungry for new knowledge, but a child. Now I’ve seen experienced actress, beautiful young woman who became the mother saw her child. Isn’t it wonderful? We have a whole team great. Yes, that’s right. We are a team.
— Mamma Mia! — first of all a musical. A light romantic Comedy. However, many see it as the story of a woman who tries to find his place in life, fighting for their rights. Today this is especially true given the fact that women’s rights were at the center of attention after a sex scandal in Hollywood. What do you all think?
— What do you think? I think that it took too much time to witness these changes. Therefore, I support the motion of Time’s Up. And genuinely happy for his success. But I think it’ll be a long time before the government which governs us and which imposes on us the laws will take something really significant in this matter. I’m afraid that with our current President, who was in the White house from reality show, this is unlikely to happen. And so you want to be happy for women to feel that society began to treat them with respect.
— You have his sons brought up these feelings?
— I hope so. You know, I have not read them a lecture. It’s not working. You want the children to see the relationship in the family. Day-to-day. The relationship between a man named pierce and a woman named Keely. Felt a mutual respect and love between them. And saw mother and father together, overcome difficulties, enjoy successes, deal with grief. This is the family. And family can sometimes be different. In 25 years of our marriage Keely, of course, we argued, argued. But the bickering never did. A quarter of a century my wife and I are on the same path, we are happy, and our feelings are strong still.
— You said that you still have dreams. Share?
Oh, of course, more good movies. Since I finished another Chapter in my life, I feel like I need to understand that Brosnan is able to play, what role I will now be offering? In addition, work on the memoir pushes me to other unexpected things. I’ve been doing is painting. Even sell paintings, offering them on your Internet site. But they never have never been exhibited. If I decided to write a book, why not try to organize the first solo exhibition of his paintings? And that’s not all. What is 65? Unless life ends at that age? My wife recently sat in the kitchen, have a heart. And made an important decision. Keeley and I will be together to produce films.
Some time ago I founded a small company Irish DreamTime. Want to make a movie. No, directing me to handle. But a good producer it can be. Yes, even with the keels. The movie will be a documentary. For the time being. We have acquired the rights to the book “Gods like us”. She talks about the lovely singers: Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Carole king. I think we can do it. From Keeley already have experience. She made a documentary “Poisoned Paradise”. It is an honest movie about pesticides, GMOs, and how all this affects the life of the Hawaiian Islands. We got a house.
— You are talking now about dreams. And nightmares? For example, a fire in your home in Malibu.
— Yes, it was a shocking incident. This leaves a deep trace in consciousness. I right now feel the fear, smell the smoke. And my burning Aston Martin! This terrible picture I definitely will never forget. You know, what’s left of my beloved car? Rama! And two silver plaques with my name on it. When you order an Aston Martin, you plant, make two sheets of silver engraved with the name and surname of the owner. They are mounted in the front doors. So, I have now only these tablets. The charred frame I sent to a landfill. But you need to take a punch. The important thing is that Keely and sons alive. Go ahead.
— You’ve seen burning cars during filming. This is a real machine. And they burn really…
Something completely different. Filming is a controlled process. And here your house is burning! And it your family. The fire occurred on February 11, 2015. The damage amounted to a million dollars. By day, I fill a full tank. Aston Martin was standing in the garage. The fire quickly spread to the roof of the house, got to our bedroom… Firefighters extinguished the flames in 30 minutes. We stood outside and watched. The keels are sometimes raised his hand like he wanted to show the firemen where still burning. Paris clung to me like a little kid. It was unbearable.
— You played James bond! He would be scared in this situation?
— Sure, Yes. Epinephrine acts equally in such cases and the agent 007 and the actor who played it. I was thinking about a full tank in the car. Cursed himself that poured as much gasoline. Then, when it was over, I learned that just a full tank and has saved us from much more damage. It turns out, the car explodes when the tank is half empty. In this case, the compression. In the tank increases the pressure and temperature. And there is a “boom”! And exploded just tires. Everything else is just burned.
— Let’s go back to dreams. Don’t think you have mentioned nothing about your paintings. What do you say, preparing your personal exhibition or not?
— Again spill the beans. Okay, listen up. I have currently completed 153 of the picture. I selected 20 of them. The selection process was difficult. Now I’m in talks about gallery in Paris. Don’t remember who, but I was convinced that the first exhibition will certainly need to organize in Paris. Let’s see what happens. On the other hand, if I was persuaded twice to sing in the musicals that bothers me to hang a dozen paintings on the wall and crack open a case of champagne to those who dare to see them?
— I think it will be worse for you than singing?
— Spot on! That’s what I feel.
— Sons like movies with your participation? Mamma Mia! 2, for example?
Yes. We watched his whole family two weeks ago. They somehow got hold of a disk with a copy and brought it home. Had a good night, I must say. Ordered pizza, watched a movie.
— Describe what should be the best output in your understanding?
— It’s a simple question. Wake up and drink a Cup of coffee. Tell Keely I love her. If the weather is good, Cycling. Then go to Studio and work with a brush over a painting. Know that while you paint, the wife prepares a delicious lunch. Lunch with the whole family. Then swim a bit. You can climb the mountain and admire the views.
— You’re Irish. And still probably rooting for England at the world Cup. What did you feel when the British defeated the Croats? Because you know now Croatia. There was filmed the second part of Mamma Mia!
— I was killed. Such a tragedy! But what to do — the Croats played very well. Strong team. Aggressive guys. But how else? You have to be aggressive if you want to win. Football is a great fair game. I love her. The England team in its current composition are a very young team. She is still ahead. I’m sure the guys and today I just keep thinking about this semi-final with Croatia. And will continue to analyze it. This is important. Mistakes makes you stronger. Believe me, I know whereof I speak. And Croatia I really love. Beautiful country. I have been there many times.
— Who did you cheer for in the final match?
— I think that Croatia will win… What a summer is! First world Cup where losing those who are sick. Then Wimbledon, where Roger Federer flies to the quarterfinals! And I want to exclaim “Mamma Mia!”
