PICK OF THE DAY
THE SIMPSONS,
8.30pm, Ch4
THANK goodness for The Simpsons. The latest terrestrial series kicks off with Treehouse Of Horror XII, one of the better Halloween specials. In Hex And The City, Homer has a curse placed on his loved ones by a gypsy, which he tries to remove by trapping a leprechaun; Wiz Kids is a Harry Potter rip-off; and House Of Whacks, the best of the three spooky tales, guest-stars Pierce Brosnan as a homicidal computer that runs the Simpsons house, falls in love with Marge and tries to bump off her husband. 'Where's Homer?' she demands on waking up and finding his bed-space empty.
Brosnan: 'Er, I think he went to work early.' Wrong answer.

This begins airing this week tonight. Sept 20 on PBS (check your local listings). It's the 5th of 6 parts in this series that Pierce narrates. America's Underwater Treasures www.pbs.org/kqed/oceanadventures/episodes/treasures/The Cousteaus begin a dive Yosemite. Yellowstone. The Smoky Mountains. The Everglades. The Grand Canyon. Everyone knows these magical places are the gems of America's national parks, and they have never been more popular with Americans and international tourists alike. But ask those same people about Flower Garden Banks, Fagatelle Bay, Gray's Reef, Thunder Bay or the Gulf of the Farallones and you're likely to get a blank stare. These are just a few of the 13 national marine sanctuaries in the United States. Jean-Michel Cousteau: Ocean Adventures brings these exquisitely beautiful locales to viewers in America's Underwater Treasures

Well this isn't exactly PB on TV anymore. This episode was narrated by Robert Redford. But it's still all part of the same series and we all love Bob, don't we?

This just showed up in a search. The Cousteau series is being re-run on the Chicago PBS station (started alst week oops) for anyone that missed it the first time around: wycc.org/progdetail.aspx?prog=17622Jean-Michel Cousteau: Ocean Adventures: Voyage to Kure (Part 2) Monday, October 09, 2006, 8:00:00 PM This is Part Two of the Jean-Michel Cousteau expediton to the outermost islands of the Northewest Hawaiian Island group. Narrated by Pierce Brosnan, this episode continues where Part One left off, as Jean-Michel and his young crew explore an array of natural phenomena, investigate little-known territories and undersea ecosystems, and come face to face with friendly and not-so-friendly land and ocean inhabitants. Monday, October 16, 2006, 8:00:00 PM Jean-Michel Cousteau: Ocean Adventures: Sharks at Risk Long feared as an object of terror, sharks are now gaining a new reputation as a species who numbers are being decimated with unprecedented speed. This decline comes at a time when we are beginning to learn more about the complexity of their behavior and to dispel the myth of the shark as "a mindless eating machine." The Coustea oceanographic team of divers and scientists travels to Rangiroa in French Polynesia and to South Africa to explore the role of this keystone species in the ocean and to other life forms, to study behaviorall patterns, examine the complexity of their intelligence, and to seek out possible reasons behind the decreases in their population. Narrated by Pierce Brosnan. Monday, October 23, 2006, 8:00:00 PM Jean-Michel Cousteau: Ocean Adventures: The Gray Whale Obstacle Course There is no whale on earth like the Gray Whale. It is the whale with the longest migration route and the most urban whale, passing some of the world's busiest cities and ports, along some of the most polluted coastlines. The only large whale to be studied in captivity, and it is the least changed for over 600,000 years. Yet, it is also one of the first to face extinction. The gray whale is the only whale removed from the endangered species list, then almost loved to death! Jean-Michel Cousteau and his team of young divers and scientists follow the annual migration of these traveling giants from Baja to the Arctic to investigate clues to a sudden decrease of population among the gray whale and to examine the less visible and more ominous obstacles these unique whales face in their struggle to survive. Narrated by Pierce Brosnan. Monday, October 30, 2006, 8:00:00 PM Jean-Michel Cousteau: Ocean Adventures: America's Underwater Treasures, Pt. 1 Belief in the resilience of the natural system, especially under water, has never been more verifiable than with the advent of marine protected areas such as the National Marine Sanctuaries. Jean-Michel Cousteau and his crew team up with scientists, naturalists and policy makers to reveal to stunning beauty and critical importance of these underwater natural treasures. Sailing to, and diving beneath thirteen 'parks' within the National Marine Sanctuary system, the team will reveal worlds little known and rarely visited along America's shorelines. Some sanctuaries are vital undersea habitats, historical sites and endangered reefs. Others are rich bays, banks and seamounts, and the breeding waters for critical ocean species such as rare sea turtles and the great whales. By visually experiencing the most up-to-date scientific review of each sanctuary, we begin to appreciate by the arcs between them that they are connected in a vast, unified system. A system that is, though nevertheless 'protected,' vulnerable. This two-part program is narrated by Robert Redford.

PB may or not be included in the program but better alerted of the possibility than not, eh? The Money Programme: The Comeback QueenKim Winser is the fashion industry's own miracle worker after she turned around old-fashioned sweater manufacturer Pringle and made it a catwalk and commercial success. Now she's trying to do the same for fusty trenchcoat kings Aquascutum. Icy Calm, I am really, really sorry but...
Nobody, short of a family member having a medical emergency, gets me out of bed that early...
However, if you want to try an Ambush for the Conan Obrien Show, that can be done. :-D

Having spent a mainly sleepless night, my friend rings me up at 9am this morning with 3 words: "Pierce. NBC. Now." Bless her. I was struck by his clear blue eyes today (that means they lit him from the front and not from above). I also notice that he's very sober on these early morning interview shows. Not quite awake yet. His Irish accent was on, probably due to hanging around with Liam.
I wonder what else he's doing in town while he's here (NYC). Perhaps this is a stopover to the U.K.
