NY Post: Jan 22, 2004 www.nypost.com/gossip/cindy.htmHARVEY Fierstein. So I ask as a joke, "You still in 'Hairspray'?" He says: "Yeah, can't you see I still have shaved eyebrows? . . . but I'm leaving in March." Harvey, the queer eye for the queer guy, was the creative juice behind the deliciously successful "La Cage Aux Folles" Broadway musical and movie. Although that was years back, it's now coming back. The Nederlanders are producing. Jerry Zaks is directing. And, like everything else, it's getting an extreme makeover. He's rejuicing the show and hitting the road with it to do the fix-up. Out-of-town tryouts start this spring in Chicago. For the Gene Barry role, they haven't got yet but they'd like Pierce Brosnan or Kevin Kline. For the George Hearn role they're looking for Robert Downey Jr. or Richard Gere. For the Hank Azaria part they're hunting Hank Azaria or Danny DeVito. The show opens here come fall. ======================================= Pierce on Broadway in La Cage Aux Folles.... never happen but damn I'd love to see it! Ace

Who is "the Gene Barry role?" Seen the movie but not Broadway! Hank Azaria was a hoot in that. Don't tell me he'd be the father (PB)!!!

Ditto. May I inquire what is the Gene Barry role though? I know, I'm a savage...

Ahem. If I'm a savage, I'm not the only one. I do hope it's the Drag Queen part but I'm afraid it's not.

The Gene Barry role would I believe be the father , so alas no drag for PB. Interesting parallels... Robin Williams played the father in the US film remake, and Harvey Feirstein played Robin Williams brother in drumroll... Mrs. Doubtfire. The mind boggles though that anyone would consider Danny DeVito as secondary casting for Hank Azaria role! Ace

Isn't it amazing that PB would play both parts - the father and the mother - equally well? He's positively typecast, though; nobody would consider him for the part of the mother. Now, for part of Hank Azaria - somehow, I don' t see PB convincingly talk about his Guatemalaness.

I have no idea what you are talking about here, but I'd sure love to see Pierce in a Broadway production! Someone must have gotten ideas while watching him sing in Evelyn. ;D
