'Black Adam': Pierce Brosnan to Play DC Hero Dr. Fate Opposite Dwayne Johnson (Exclusive) March 24, 2021 2:50pm by Borys Kit
Tomorrow will never die now that the Justice Society is complete in New Line's DC superhero movie.
The name is Fate. Dr. Fate.
In the first superhero foray of his career, Pierce Brosnan has nabbed the plum role of classic hero Dr. Fate opposite Dwayne Johnson in Black Adam, New Line's action-adventure project featuring the DC Comics antihero.
Brosnan, known for being one of only a handful of actors to inhabit the James Bond mantle, is the last key member of the roll call for the production that will feature the big-screen debut of the Justice Society, DC’s precursor to the Justice League that takes a familial and multi-generational approach to heroics. Already suited up are Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone.
Black Adam is the second New Line/DC film following 2019’s critical and commercial hit Shazam! with the two characters, Shazam and Black Adam, being arch rivals in the DC Universe. The project is headed towards an April start of production in Atlanta.
Plot details are being kept shrouded behind a veil of secrecy as are character details for Marwan Kenzari, the Aladdin and The Old Guard actor who is also in the cast.
Brosnan will play Kent Nelson, aka the good Dr. Fate, a son of an archeologist who was taught sorcery skills and given the magical Helmet of Fate. The character, created by Gardner Fox and Howard Sherman, is one of DC’s oldest characters, having first appeared in 1940’s More Fun Comics #5.
Jaume Collet-Serra, who also directed Johnson opposite Emily Blunt in Disney’s upcoming Jungle Cruise, is directing Black Adam. Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions are producing with Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo. The project reunites the team behind Jungle Cruise, which is currently set to open July 30, 2021.
FlynnPictureCo’s Scott Sheldon is serving as executive producer. Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani wrote the latest draft with Adam Sztykiel writing the previous draft.
Brosnan is the veteran actor with dozens of credits, although he may be best known globally for his suave and sophisticated take on James Bond in the 007 movies in the 1990s and early 2000s which grossed almost $1.5 billion.
He also starred in the hit remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, the first studio project under his Irish DreamTime production banner, as well as the blockbuster Mamma Mia! films, and the critically acclaimed thrillers The Matador and The Ghost Writer.
The actor and environmentalist- philanthropist was most recently seen in Netflix’s comedy Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga alongside Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams, and next appears in the musical adaptation of the classic fairy tale Cinderella releasing this July.
Brosnan is repped by CAA, Curtis Brown, and Hansen, Jacobson.

DC's Black Adam: Pierce Brosnan Cast as Doctor Fate From the UK to DC. J. Kim Murphy By J. Kim Murphy Updated: 24 Mar 2021 7:05 pm Posted: 24 Mar 2021 6:57 pm
The Rock has found a new adversary in 007. Pierce Brosnan has been cast as Kent Nelson, aka Doctor Fate, opposite Dwayne Johnson in the upcoming Black Adam movie, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter and confirmed by Deadline.
Brosnan is the latest key cast member to be added to the film, which will serve as the big screen debut of the Justice Society of America. Doctor Fate is a founding member of the group and possesses sorcery skills bestowed upon him by the Helmet of Fate. The character first debuted in 1940's More Fun Comics #5.
Johnson's anti-hero will face-off against the Justice Society of America in the movie. Other cast members already announced for the film include Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone.
Although this will mark Brosnan's first foray into the realm of comic book adaptations, the star is no stranger to blockbusters, having held the mantle of James Bond. More recently, he's starred in action films like The Foreigner and The November Man. Last year he appeared in Netflix's musical comedy Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.
Black Adam will be the second New Line/DC film production after 2019's Shazam! Johnson was originally slated to appear in Shazam! as a villain, though plans were reworked to give the star his own solo film.
Jaume Collet-Serra, who directed Johnson in Disney's upcoming Jungle Cruise, is reteaming with the star to helm the film. The production is set to begin filming in April.
In our review of Shazam!, IGN gave the film an 8.8, calling it "DC's most joyful and sweet movie since the era of Christopher Reeve's Superman."

Black Adam: Pierce Brosnan Cast as Doctor Fate By Spencer Perry - March 24, 2021 06:02 pm EDT
Production on Black Adam is nearing its start date and a major piece of the cast has been revealed as The Hollywood Reporter brings word none other than Pierce Brosnan will appear as hero Doctor Fate! The former James Bond actor joins Dwayne Johnson as the titular anti-hero in the film alongside his fellow Justice Society members Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher; Aldis Hodge as Hawkman; Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone; with Marwan Kenzari (The Old Guard) and Sarah Shahi (Person of Interest) in undisclosed roles. Filming on the movie is scheduled to begin in April in Atlanta with Johnson teasing the start of it all earlier this week.
Though a number of different versions of Doctor Fate have been featured in DC Comics before, Brosnan will take on the part of Kent Nelson, the original Doctor Fate as seen in More Fun Comics and All Star Comics. Wearing the cloak, amulet, and helmet of Nabu, Doctor Fate is a master of magic with countless abilities up his sleeve including flight, strength, telepathy, flame spells, and countless other powers. There's limitless possibilities for the character in live-action on the big screen so director Jaume Collet-Serra will have plenty to throw at the titular Black Adam. It was previously reported that DC and Warner Bros. had "big" plans for the Doctor Fate character.
"Like most kids growing up, I dreamed about being a superhero," Johnson previously said. "As a kid, Superman was the hero I always wanted to be. But, a few years into my fantasy, I realized that Superman was the hero, I could never be. I was too rebellious. Too rambunctious. Too resistant to convention and authority."
"Despite my troubles, I was still a good kid with a good heart - I just liked to do things my way. Now, years later as a man, with the same DNA I had as a kid - my superhero dreams have come true. I’m honored to join the iconic #DCUniverse and it’s a true pleasure to become, BLACK ADAM. BLACK ADAM is blessed by magic with the powers equal to SUPERMAN, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line. He’s a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people - but he does it his way. Truth and justice - the BLACK ADAM way."

‘BLACK ADAM’ Producer Hiram Garcia Talks Pierce Brosnan As Doctor Fate
Tia Fabi October 19, 2021
Dwayne Johnson’s been preparing to play Black Adam for a long time now; it finally seems like we’ll be getting the iconic DC character in 2022 in his own solo film. We got our first look during this weekend’s DC FanDome, but what else can we expect? In an interview with the Illuminerdi, Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia spoke about what Pierce Brosnan brought to the table in his portrayal of Doctor Fate in the film:
“When you’re looking at Pierce Brosnan, who is an OG as, as best as you could describe it, he just blows you away. From the moment he comes on, on set, he just elevates everything up. He just is so charming. He has such a command of just presence on screen I think the minute he goes on there. And seeing him with all of our young actors as well, it’s so fun to see them just hang with him, get to know him. They all became such close friends on this process and were hanging so much offset on downtime. And you could feel that energy and that chemistry when they were on screen. He was such a dream casting.”
Garcia continued: “Dr. Fate is such a special character and he is, in essence, he and Hawkman are the elder statesman in a universe like this. They’ve been around for a very long time. They both have fascinating histories. Pierce was able to tap into that weight, that poise that comes with millennia of wisdom as being Dr. Fate and what comes with that helmet. I think he was able to tap into that in a special way for us. And in the process, you could just feel it lift up the rest of the cast. Because anytime you had James Bond coming in and now he’s stepping in, and now he’s becoming, like you said, Kent Nelson, becoming Dr. Fate, it’s a very cool thing. And the chemistry he was able to create with the actors from that was really special.” Black Adam will hit theaters on July 29, 2022 – you can read the full interview here.

Black Adam Producer Teases Doctor Fate’s Dynamic With Hawkman And The JSA: Exclusive
Posted by Caitlin Tyrrell | Oct 18, 2021
Black Adam is one of the most highly anticipated DC films coming in 2022 with an impressive cast exploring characters that haven’t gotten the chance to flourish on the big screen the way that so many others have. One such character is Kent Nelson aka Dr. Fate. When news broke that Pierce Brosnan had been cast as Dr. Fate, fans were beyond excited for the legendary actor to take on the role of the fan favorite DC character.
In an exclusive interview with The Illuminerdi, Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia revealed what Brosnan brought to the role of Dr. Fate and how he elevates everything on set.
It’s no surprise that Brosnan is able to bring something special not only to Dr. Fate, but the entire Black Adam production. The chemistry that Hiram Garcia references will likely be an important part of making the JSA feel like an authentic team whether they have been working together for a while or are a new group.

Dr. Fate is such a commanding presence as a character, but to hear that Brosnan brought that energy to set makes his casting even more exciting especially with how interesting Dr. Fate is as a character. Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia hinted at how Dr. Fate and Hawkman will fit into the JSA and have some intriguing similarities that could set up an interesting dynamic between the pair.
“Dr.
And the chemistry he was able to create with the actors from that was really special.”
In the comics Kent is the son of archeologist Sven Nelson who while accompanying his father on an expedition in 1920 discovered the tomb of Nabu the Wise. When he opened the tomb, waking Nabu, he accidentally released a poisonous gas that kills his father.
Nabu takes pity on the young man and spends the next twenty years teaching him sorcery before bestowing the Helmet of Fate, the Amulet of Anubis, and the Cloak of Destiny upon him. When Kent returned to the U.S. he began fighting against supernatural evil and helped co-found the Justice Society of America in 1940. Hiram Garcia refers to Hawkman and Dr. Fate as the veterans of the JSA in Black Adam. Assuming the JSA has existed for a while in Black Adam this could indicate that they are founding members as Dr. Fate was in the comics. Garcia also says that both Hawkman and Dr. Fate “have been around a very long time.”
Hawkman is originally from Ancient Egypt, being the most recent reincarnation of Ancient Egyptian Prince Khufu, but how old will Dr. Fate be in Black Adam? Could Black Adam be pulling from Dr. Fate’s comic book origins and have the sorcerer’s origins be 1920 or is this in reference to Nabu who is a part of Kent Nelson when he puts on the helmet, sometimes possessing him in the comics?
The gravitas, poise, and wisdom that Dr. Fate must exude as a powerful sorcerer with all of the knowledge from the Helmet of Fate is a tall order, but based on what Hiram Garcia says it seems like Pierce Brosnan delivers. It will be interesting to see the dynamic of the JSA with Hawkman and Dr. Fate being these well established characters with knowledge that spans thousands of years versus the younger members of the team who likely don’t have the same weight of wisdom and knowledge on their shoulders. And finally seeing Pierce Brosnan don the Helmet of Fate is sure to be a truly amazing sight to see.
Black Adam is scheduled to hit theaters July 29, 2022.

MacFarlene Toys has just released the first round of what I am sure will be at least two more rounds of Black Adam action figures in various sizes. This version of Dr. Fate only has the helmet on which means no Pierce face sculpt. Dr. Fate Seven Inch FigureMy brother is an action figure collector and seems to think that Pierce never puts on the suit because he can't see Pierce fitting into it so nicely. I think he is in the suit, but obviously is CGIed into doing things like floating. There is also very serious talk now that Doctor Fate will get his own limited run series on HBOMax and that WB executives are very happy with his performance. -- Barbara

They did say Brosnan did the motion capture work for his character, so I'm assuming he's definitely in the suit, or at least in shots where he's without his helmet.

Why Black Adam’s Doctor Fate “Felt Like a Good Fit” for Pierce Brosnan After James Bond
Pierce Brosnan sheds light on what it was like becoming Doctor Fate for the Black Adam movie. By Rosie Knight | July 21, 2022
The chance to speak to a Hollywood icon like Pierce Brosnan is a rare one, but we were lucky enough to do just that in an exclusive chat about his role in Black Adam. Playing Doctor Fate marks Brosnan’s entry into the superhero movie world and it’s long overdue.
Brosnan reveals he’s a lifelong comic book fan who couldn’t be happier to be a part of the epic and potentially game changing DC movie, especially in a role as important as Doctor Fate. Here’s what we had to say about the upcoming blockbuster…
How are you feeling about Black Adam and making your debut as Doctor Fate?
PIERCE BROSNAN: I’m so excited about this film. I’ve actually never been so excited about something. I had such a great time making it with Dwayne and my compatriots.
Were you a comic book fan before making Black Adam?
I am! I grew up in Ireland, and there was one comic book that my mother would send me all the time, and that was Dan Dare. So began my comic-book life, I suppose. I wasn’t really aware of Black Adam, [at the time].
Doctor Fate found me at a good point in my life; having traversed the world of James Bond and having been at the table as long as I have, it felt like a good fit. And Jaume [Collet-Serra] is such a collaborative director—he made me very comfortable and gave me the confidence to portray Doctor Fate. Down to the design of the helmet, I was a participant, so it was an education for me to find out this character was so loved and one of the oldest heroes in the pantheon of comic books.
As a lover of comics, what was it like to step into your first superhero role?
It was a joy to play. You can get overwhelmed by trying to take on this universe. But you let all that go, and you play the humanity of the man who’s burdened with the beauty and the curse of this helmet. He’s shackled to this relic that wields so much power, he’s subservient to it. He tries to live his life with this beautiful trauma of seeing the future of what can happen to humankind. As an actor, if you go to the most human level of compassion, you release yourself from the technical aspects of it and leave it to the audience’s imagination.
You mentioned your “compatriots.” What was it like to work alongside your JSA teammates?
They have become dear cherished friends. Watching them, I was a member of the audience. I was bewitched by moviemaking. The sweet innocence of Cyclone, the erudite life that Quintessa has, mixed with the jovial charisma and big puppy dog energy of Noah. Then the commanding presence of Hawkman: my oldest friend, my commander, my leader.
