deadline.com/2016/06/pierce-brosnan-star-the-son-amc-series-replace-sam-neill-1201767390/Pierce Brosnan To Star In AMC Series ‘The Son’ In TV Return, Replaces Sam Neill by Nellie Andreeva • tip June 6, 2016 7:20am EXCLUSIVE: Pierce Brosnan is returning to television as the lead of AMC’s upcoming drama series The Son. The former James Bond is replacing Sam Neill who had been originally cast in the role but left for personal reasons. This marks only the second major TV series gig for Brosnan three decades after his starring role on the 1982 NBC adventure dramedy Remington Steele. Based on the book by Philipp Meyer and written by Meyer, Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy, The Son is a multi-generational epic tale of the story of America’s birth as a superpower through the bloody rise and fall of one Texas family. Brosnan will play Eli, the charismatic patriarch of the McCullough family. As a child, he was kidnapped and raised among the Comanche Native American tribe and applies the brutal Comanche worldview to his business dealings. He was born on the day Texas became an independent Republic, earning the nickname “First Son of Texas” and is a relic of the Wild West, uneasy with the inexorable taming of Texas and the uncertain future of his legacy. Kevin Murphy serves as executive producer/showrunner on the series, which has a 10-episode straight-to-series order. The Son, which begins production this month in Austin for a 2017 premiere, also underwent a director change, with British helmer Tom Harper (War & Peace) stepping in to direct the opening episode, replacing Michelle McLaren who had dropped out for scheduling reasons. Sonar Entertainment and AMC Studios are producing the series, which co-stars Henry Garrett, Zahn McClarnon, Paola Nunez and Sydney Lucas. Michael Connolly also executive produces. Irish-American actor Brosnan recently completed filming The Foreigner, a Martin Campbell film co-starring Jackie Chan. Brosnan also stars in the upcoming thriller I.T. produced by his production company, Irish DreamTime, alongside Voltage Pictures and Friendly Films,. Last year Brosnan co-starred in the thriller No Escape alongside Owen Wilson and Lake Bell; Survivor with Milla Jovovich; and Some Kind of Beautiful with Salma Hayek, Jessica Alba and Malcolm McDowell which Brosnan also produced. Bronsan is repped by CAA and attorney Tom Hansen.

From a critic who has read the book ... www.yahoo.com/tv/bob-odenkirk-pierce-brosnan-amy-sherman-palladino-182942484.htmlThe Son (AMC) Although this has been announced as an “epic tale” of the “rise and fall of one Texas family,” take it from someone who has read Philipp Meyer’s 2013 novel: This is a Western, a damn good Western, and it will turn into a (God forbid) sprawling saga of a brawling clan only if AMC screws it up. Pierce Brosnan has been cast as the head of the prosperous McCullough family, a man with a unique past: He was raised by Comanche Indians. In the book, this character, known as the Colonel, is no wily J.R- Ewing type, no rascally patriarch — he’s a ruthless, late-19th-century-born man whose malign influence brings challenges and not a little pain to the next two generations of his family. I’m glad author Meyer will be one of the 10-episode series’ writers, and hope he’ll be able to retain the book’s unsentimental view of the Old West, as in this typically dyspeptic observation: “the Colonel always complained about the moment his cowboys began to read novels about cowboys; they all lost track of which was true, the books or their own lives.” I want to see a Son who’ll rise to this prose.

Interesting and it would be great to see him in a quality production where he gets to act again. Since he was raised by the Commanches he doesn't need to have a Texas accent. But it begs the question, what kind of accent will he have?

This was one of the casting calls for this series ... tvradio.blog.austin360.com/2016/05/19/new-amc-show-the-son-holding-austin-casting-call/.... “The Son,” based on a novel by Philipp Meyer, is looking for paid background extras. Filming will begin in early June and run through September. Producers are looking for men and women ages 18 and up, particularly folks with “Wild West” attire, “interesting” faces, facial hair, horseback-riding experience, ranching or farming experience, archery or firearms skills and law enforcement experience. A description of the show: “This is a world of cowboys, vaqueros, oil loggers and American Indians clashing on the frontiers of the American West as Texas makes a name for itself. The period spans 1849-1915.” ....

www.cowboysindians.com/2016/07/pierce-brosnan-is-heading-westward-for-the-son/by Joe Leydon • July 25, 2016 Viewers who were sad to see the end of Hell on Wheels got a fleeting glimpse of good news during Saturday night’s airing of the series finale: AMC has another western drama in the offing. According to the teasing ads aimed to whet our appetite, The Son, starring former 007 Pierce Brosnan, will premiere next year on the cable network. Based on Philipp Meyer’s acclaimed novel, the series is described by AMC as a multi-generational epic that tells the story of America’s birth as a superpower through the bloody rise of one Texas family. The first 10-episode season will compare and contrast parallel narratives in two different time periods. In one, we’ll follow the story of young Eli McCullough after he is kidnapped and indoctrinated into a tribe of Comanches in 1849. In the other, set 60 years later, we’ll see a grown Eli struggle to maintain his family’s cattle empire during the turbulent Bandit Wars of South Texas. Brosnan will portray the elder Eli, charismatic patriarch of the McCullough family. As an adult, he applies the brutal Comanche worldview to his business dealings. He was born on the day Texas became an independent Republic, earning him the nickname “First Son of Texas.” But he is viewed by many as a relic of the Wild West. And, truth to tell, Eli is uneasy with the inexorable taming of Texas and the uncertain future of his legacy. By the way: The Son — which currently is filming on location in the Austin area — won’t be Brosnan’s first rodeo. The Irish-born actor also starred in Seraphim Falls, a gritty 2006 western in which he played a Union Army veteran hunted by a former Confederate soldier (Liam Neeson) who blames him for the deaths of his wife and children. If that plot sounds slightly similar to the original premise of a certain just-completed AMC series, consider this: The movie was directed by David Von Ancken, who later directed several episodes of Hell on Wheels – including the first and last episodes.
