May 3, 2014 Karl Quinn Producers Paul Currie and Bill Mechanic. Photo: Eddie Jim Outside the Docklands studio, rain is falling hard, but inside, it's all sun - or Sun King, to be precise - as filming on a lavish historical fantasy starring Pierce Brosnan as Louis XIV is in full swing. The Moon and the Sun is set at the turn of the 17th century, with Brosnan as an ageing king in search of immortality, Chinese star Fan Bingbing as a mermaid he thinks might get him there, William Hurt as Jesuit priest Pere La Chaise, and English actress Kaya Scodelario (best known for the gritty UKTV series Skins) as the king's illegitimate daughter. It is based on a novel by fantasy author Vonda N. McIntyre, which won the prestigious Nebula Award (for science-fiction and fantasy writing) in 1997, famously beating George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones in the process. ''Not a bad pedigree,'' says Bill Mechanic, who has been trying to get this film made since 2001. A former head of Fox's film division in Hollywood, Mechanic oversaw the likes of Fight Club, Moulin Rouge and Titanic, the last of which, he says, cast a long shadow over the industry. ''After that, everybody started chasing only big pictures,'' he says. ''Titanic bifurcated the market: you can make a movie that's $200 million, or you can make a movie that costs nothing. What you can't do is make a movie in between.'' With a reported budget of about $40 million, The Moon and the Sun is right in that not-so-very-sweet spot. It took a chunk of money from the incentive location fund set up by the former Labor government to lure it Down Under (the same fund that brought Angelina Jolie's Unbroken to the Gold Coast), but it was Baz Luhrmann's achievement with The Great Gatsby that proved to Mechanic he'd be able to make it work here. ''The way he shot a movie completely in Australia that was completely New York-based said, 'Oh, there is a way to make this work','' he says. And with the likes of Oscar-winner Lizzy Gardiner doing the costumes and a host of other key crew members from Luhrmann's film on board, ''I knew I could get the look I wanted''. ''I knew if we could get the reality set by shooting in Versailles, we could cheat the rest by stepping from one door in Versailles through another door in Melbourne,'' Mechanic says. Judging from the set, the cheat appears mighty convincing. The king's bed chamber is a dark riot of black and gold, with the face of Brosnan's Louis looming out of frescoes and bedheads, with gilt fretwork (actually from timber picture frames) adorning columns, and real timber parquetry on the floor. There are recreations of ancient cellos and viola da gamba, there's a dungeon-like room, a convent and a fisherman's cottage, and a huge grotto, which is destined to be flooded before the shoot is over. The production started with two weeks in Versailles, which has one drawback. ''You're a long way away from France,'' says Mechanic. ''So if you didn't get it shot in Versailles, there's no going back.'' The Moon and the Sun will be released in mid-2015.

The Moon and The Sun tells the tale of Louis XIV whose quest for immortality leads him to capture a mermaid in order to steal her life force. At the same time, the monarch’s illegitimate daughter, Marie-Josephe, is brought to court in order to pay off war debts. Complications arise when Marie-Josephe forms bonds with not only the mysterious mermaid but also the handsome sailor who was her captor. With a stellar cast led by Pierce Brosnan as Louis XIV, The Sun King, the film also stars Academy Award winner William Hurt (Kiss of the Spider Woman), Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Ron Howard’s Heart of the Sea), Kaya Scodelario (“Skins,” Fox’s upcoming The Maze Runner), Ben Lloyd-Hughes (Divergent), Pablo Schreiber (“The Wire,” “Orange is the New Black“) and features Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing (X-Men: Days of Future Past) as the mermaid. This lavish production showcases some of Australia’s premier artistic talent including Oscar-winning costume designer Lizzy Gardiner (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Ghost Rider), production designer Michelle McGahey (Killer Elite, I, Frankenstein) and Oscar-nominated editor John Gilbert (The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, The Bank Job), with VFX work by Jamy Wheless (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Transformers) and John Helms (Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Eragon). Produced by Bill Mechanic (Coraline, former Chairman and CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment), James Pang (Painted Skin 1 & 2), Wei Han and Paul Currie (Rampart, One Perfect Day) and directed by Sean McNamara (Soul Surfer). Bill Mechanic says, “We have assembled a stellar cast and some of the best artistic and technical talent in the world to bring this book to life. The Moon and The Sun will hopefully create a lasting, iconic image of mermaids, now and forever.” Presented by Mechanic’s Pandemonium Films and Cosmos Filmed Entertainment in conjunction with Bliss Media, Lightstream Pictures and Boarside Productions Limited. Independently financed, The Moon and The Sun will be distributed by Focus Features in the USA while international sales will be handled by Good Universe. The Moon and The Sun is scheduled for release in 2015. Photo – photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20140506/84628SOURCE The Moon and the Sun

May 27, 2014 - 12:01AM Karl Quinn National Film Editor The producers of the historical fantasy being made in Melbourne are counting on the appeal of its Chinese star Fan Bingbing to open some pretty major doors in her homeland. Fan Bingbing may not be a household name in Australia just yet, but world domination is surely not far away. A little over a week ago, the 32-year-old Chinese actress was mobbed by fans (admittedly, mostly Chinese students) on the red carpet at the Australian premiere of X-Men: Days of Future Past, in which she plays the role of Link, the mutant who can open up time portals with a purple blast from her hand. In a slinky cream sheath with cowl-necked shawl, she was the picture of international movie-star glamour. It was a far cry from just days earlier, when Fan had spent hour after hour immersed in a deep pool of green water on the set of The Moon and the Sun, the historical fantasy film being shot at Docklands Studios Melbourne. ‘‘Normally I play normal people but lately I’ve been playing mutants and mermaids,’’ she says via her translator, and in snatches of halting English. ‘‘It’s a really fresh and interesting experience [but] it’s really cold.’’ Fan’s role, which she shot over two weeks, is not especially large, but it is critical – both on screen and off. King Louis XIV (Pierce Brosnan) believes that her mermaid holds the key to eternal life. In a sense, she is to this film as Andy Serkis is to Peter Jackson’s Tolkien movies, with her performance to be the basis of a computer-rendered character (even her mermaid tail, painstakingly hunted down by the production designers from a boutique manufacturer in the US, will be digitally recreated). But it is in the booming Chinese marketplace that Fan’s real value will be at the fore. Without her, in fact, there’s a real chance this film would never have been made. More than half of the film’s $42 million budget comes from Chinese investors, and they stumped up $23 million of their own money largely because of Fan Bingbing. Already a TV star when she signed on to the film three years ago, she is, says Chinese producer Han Wei, ‘‘huge’’ in her homeland. ‘‘She’s got a lot of international brands trying to market into China,’’ Han says. ‘‘She’s got deals with L’Oreal, Chopard, Adidas, Mercedes-Benz. She’s the number-one money-maker in the entertainment industry. She’s a hard-working independent woman, too, beautiful. I think she will go very long.’’ At the end of the year, Fan is heading to Los Angeles to learn English. ‘‘And then she’ll try to get more international projects,’’ Han says. ‘‘That’s more challenging for her and she’s got the huge market behind her, so she knows that’s the right timing.’’ The producers of The Moon and the Sun hope the timing will be right for their film too. They aim to release it around April next year, and China is a key territory. According to Han, it will in its four-week window find its way onto every single screen in China – which by then could number around 30,000. By way of comparison, a major release in the US will hit about 4000 screens, and in Australia, about 500. China’s cinema boom has it predicted to overtake the US as the world’s largest marketplace by 2020 (it is already the second largest). Each day, between eight and 18 new screens are being built (estimates vary widely). No one thinks the market is anywhere near saturated yet, but understanding that market, and getting access to it, is far from easy. ‘‘The way they distribute movies in China is very different,’’ says Han. ‘‘No matter how big your budget, you only get four weeks [at the cinema].’’ She says it can be very hard for a small film to get distribution, but she insists that The Moon and the Sun has this in the bag. It will open on 40 per cent of the country’s screens in the first weekend, she says, and ‘‘eventually roll out across all screens’’. In China, the film will be released in 3D because at three times the price of a standard ticket, ‘‘the price point for 3D is quite impressive’’. This all sounds rather bullish, but Han says it’s not all locked and loaded. Despite having majority Chinese finance and a Chinese co-star, The Moon and the Sun is not considered either Chinese or an official co-production. And for a foreign film in China, life can be tough. ‘‘There’s a government rule in China that you cannot market an imported movie big, they don’t let you do that,’’ she says. ‘‘They protect domestic movies and co-productions.’’ There is some hope that the Chinese government might consider tweaking the rules around co-productions later this year, a move that could benefit The Moon and the Sun if it came to pass. ‘‘If we can qualify, it will be very easy to make the money back for our investors,’’ says Han. ‘‘If not, we have to depend on the international market.’’

www.couriermail.com.au/entertainment/movies/how-pierce-brosnan-spent-his-time-in-australia-while-filiming-the-moon-and-the-sun/story-fnihm796-1226933044942How Pierce Brosnan spent his time in Australia while filiming The Moon and the Sun
NEALA JOHNSON MOVIE REPORTER NEWS CORP AUSTRALIA MAY 27, 2014 12:48PM PIERCE Brosnan has become a little too used to being treated like a king during his time in Australia. “It’s been very endearing to be called ‘Your Highness’ or ‘Your Majesty’. But when I get home, that’s it! It’ll be: ‘Get the garbage! Where we going?’ It all falls away, thank God.” Brosnan, an Irish-born, English-raised star — who was a super-suave 007 in four James Bond films in the ’90s and 2000s before Daniel Craig took over — is in Melbourne playing King Louis XIV in the movie fantasy The Moon and the Sun . The film began its shoot at the French king’s famed Palace of Versailles earlier this year, before moving to Melbourne’s Docklands Studios in late April. Lavish palace interiors have been recreated inside the studios. The production wraps this Thursday, after which Brosnan will fly home to his family in Hawaii. The actor turned 61 while in Melbourne, but hasn’t had much time for partying or sightseeing. “It’s been work, work, work. But I’ve worked on my golf, I went to the opera (Opera Australia’s production of Carmen), and I got to see old friends that I have here, like Geoffrey Rush and a few other rapscallions of the theatrical world. “I go home a happy man from Melbourne and left a bit of my heart here. Australia, I’ve always had a big passion for, for one reason or another. I was married to a great Australian woman a long time ago, but Sydney was the only place I’d been to (before this).” Brosnan’s first wife was Australian actor Cassandra Harris, who had starred in an earlier Bond film, For Your Eyes Only. The pair were married 11 years, until Cassandra died of ovarian cancer in 1991. he Moon and the Sun is an independent production that was brought to Melbourne by incentives from Film Victoria. Based on the novel by Vonda M. McIntyre, it follows Louis XIV’s quest to steal immortality from a mermaid. “This guy is the king of all kings,” Brosnan explained. “It’s not a historically on-the-nose rendition, it’s a fantasy fable. So it allows one a lot of leeway to make an impressionistic gesture at the whole court of Louis. And, by heavens, we’ve pulled it off, I think.” Brosnan is almost unrecognisable in a long wig and regal outfits designed by Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’s Oscar-winning designer Lizzy Gardiner. Brosnan said he has drawn on his inner rock star to play the King. “My Louis is Jim Morrison meets Alexander McQueen meets Tom Ford, in the costume department. With a magnificent wig, a great-looking horse and lots of attitude. He certainly was the rock star of his time. His is a grand vanity: he wants to live on forever so he can eat, fornicate and go to war.” The Moon and the Sun also stars Chinese sensation Fan Bingbing as the mermaid, plus Americans William Hurt, Pablo Schreiber (Orange is the New Black) and Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter). The film is expected to reach cinemas in the first half of 2015. Post-production visual effects will also be handled in Melbourne by the local outpost of US VFX house Luma Pictures.

www.screendaily.com/news/chinas-kylin-ploughs-205m-into-brosnan-film/5072570.articleChina's Kylin Films ploughs $20.5m into Pierce Brosnan film 29 May, 2014 | By Sandy George EXCLUSIVE: Investors say their contribution to period drama The Moon And The Sun is China’s biggest financial contribution to a non-studio movie produced outside mainland China. [Exclusive first image] Kylin Films’ investment in The Moon And The Sun, currently being filmed in Melbourne with Pierce Brosnan, is China’s biggest financial contribution to a non-studio movie produced outside Mainland China. Speaking on behalf of James Pang, who owns 75% of the private film production and finance company, Leo Shi Young said: “The total investment (budget) is US$40.5m and we, Kylin Films, put in $20.5m.” He said an additional $3m has come from Evergrande Pictures, an unrelated Chinese player. Director Sean McNamara’s The Moon And The Sun is based on Vanda McIntrye’s novel of the same name and is set in the court of Louis XIV of France in 1682. It is about a king (Pierce Brosnan), whose quest for immortality leads him to try and capture the life force of a mermaid (Fan Bingbing), but complications arise when his illegitimate daughter Marie-Josephe (Kaya Scodelario) is brought to his court. Bill Mechanic, under his Pandemonium Films banner, is the main driver behind the adult fable. The former CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment is producing alongside Pang. The other producers are Bliss Media’s Wei Han, who acted as a conduit between Mechanic and his Chinese partners, and Lightstream Pictures’ Paul Currie, an LA-based Australian. Currie convinced Mechanic to base The Moon And The Sun in Australia by securing a 30% rebate on the Australian expenditure. He did this by securing finance from a fund in place to attract big-budget movies and he will also claim the 16.5% location rebate. “The rebates are great and Australia has expert crew and amazing visual effects and it is a country that loves challenging films and is not getting enough films,” said Currie. “There’s big films made by Baz (Luhrmanm) and George (Miller), and there’s a lot of (modest-budget) Australian films … but what I think Australia can also do well is mid-sized genre films in the $10-30m range that are technically challenging. That was my pitch to him.” The major Australian component of the shoot started on April 23 in Victoria, which won out over New South Wales and Queensland for monetary and logistical reasons. Filming is based at Docklands Studios Melbourne and other locations include Melbourne University, Bushrangers Bay and Werribee Mansion. Prior to this, 11 days of filming took place in France. Currie understands that the film got unprecedented access to the Palace of Versailles because management believe the film’s fantasy elements have the potential to attract younger people to the venue. Currie sees the core audience as being “women of all ages” and the film as “somewhere between Twilight and Alice In Wonderland”. All post is being done in Australia and is likely to run through until Feb 2015. Good Universe is handling international sales and Focus Features has US rights. Mechanic and Currie hope to make more films with their Chinese partners including a World War 2 drama and the contemporary thriller 2:22, which several years ago won investment approval from Screen Australia.

Mike Emaneke First Posted: Sep 09, 2014 The year 2015 is a really good year for science fiction fans. The novel by Vonda N. McIntyre that won the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 2007, The Moon and the Sun, finally comes to the cinema. The book was picked by Paramount Pictures, Bliss Media, Brookwell McNamara Entertainment, Cosmos Filmed Entertainment, Good Universe, Lightstream Pictures and Pandemonium for production. Paramount picked Sean McNamara who has done a lot of work on TV and movies aimed at a younger demographic. This movie being a little more grown in theme may be a slight challenge for the seasoned director. The movie centers around four major characters in the court of King Louis XIV. The King afraid of dying sends Father Yves de la Croix to bring a mythical sea creature whose flesh is rumored to confer those that eat it immortality. Father Le Croix brings a live and frozen specimen, it falls unto his sister Mademoiselle Marie-Josephe to take care of the live monster while dissections are carried out on the frozen specimen. Marie finds out that this is no monster but a sea woman who speaks in a musical way that only she can understand. Marie tries to let people in on this but she is labeled hysterical by all except the stoic Count Lucien. The mermaid leads them to a sunken galleon to try and win her freedom but the King is adamant that he will eat her. She is however released by the trio whom she shows gratitude by showering them with sunken treasure. The plot is severely interesting with the book beating R. R. Martin's A Game 0f Thrones for the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 2007. The film sees the return of Pierce Brosnan from whence he went after being retired from the Bond series. Pierce shall be playing King Louise XIV. Kayla Scodelario shall be playing Marie-Josephe; Benjamin Walker as Father Yves De La Croix and Fan Bingbing as the mermaid Sherzad. The movie was shot in Australia.

McIntyre's 1997 Nebula Award-winning historical sci-fi novel of the same name, is set for release to US theaters on April 10. Directed by Sean McNamara from a script written by Ronald Bass, Barry Berman, Laura Harrington, Bill Mechanic and James Schamus, it follows the 17th century French King Louis XIV's (Pierce Brosnan) quest for immortality as he captures and tries to steal the lifeforce of a mermaid, a quest complicated when his illegitimate daughter Marie-Josephe (Kaya Scodelario) discovers and befriends the creature (Fan Bingbing). According to the story, Father Yves de la Croix (Benjamin Walker), a natural philosopher and explorer, on his return from a mission brings back two specimens of sea creatures: a dead male and a live female which was placed in the Apollo fountain in the Palace of Versailles. In the course of acting as Yves' assistant, sketching the dead male sea creature's dissection, and caring for the live specimen, Marie-Josèphe soon realizes that the creature is a sentient sea woman. Thus, Marie-Josèphe tries to convince the others at court, including Yves, that the sea woman is intelligent and hopefully free her. Unfortunately, no one but Pere de Chaise (William Hurt) took her seriously. The king intends to keep the creature and harvest her life force in his quest for immortality. In the end though, Marie-Joseph did manage to save and set the mermaid free. Paramount Pictures has acquired the US distribution rights to The Moon and The Sun, which also stars Ben Lloyd-Hughes as Jean-Michel Lintillac, Paul Ireland as Benoit,Pablo Schreiber as Dr. Labarthe, Rachel Griffiths as Abbess, and Crystal Clarke as Magali. Filming for The Moon and the Sun began in early April 2014 and wrapped-up in end of May 2014. The studio has not yet released any official trailer clip nor teaser poster for the upcoming film.
