www.deadline.com/2014/06/coup-movie-release-date-owen-wilson-weinstein-company/Weinstein Co Sets March 2015 Release For Cannes Pickup ‘The Coup’, Moves ‘Paddington’ To Christmas Day
By THE DEADLINE TEAM | Tuesday June 10, 2014 @ 2:35pm PDT Tags: Paddington, The Coup, The Weinstein Company, Underdogs The Weinstein Company made one of the biggest purchase of last month’s Cannes Film Festival when it scooped up The Coup, the John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle international thriller that stars Owen Wilson, Pierce Brosnan and Lake Bell. The deal for U.S. distribution rights topped a bidding battle that topped out at $5 million. Now that pic has a release date: March 6, 2015. The plot centers on an American family that relocates to Southeast Asia, only to find themselves in the middle of a violent coup. They struggle to find an escape route because the new parties in control are executing foreigners as quickly as they can round them up. Bold Films produced, and Drew Dowdle, Michel Litvak and David Lancaster produced.

The film is directed by John Erick Dowdle (Devil, Quarantine) and stars Pierce Brosnan, Owen Wilson, Lake Bell and Sterling Jerins. The movie follows an American family who move to Southeast Asia and find themselves entangled in a violent coup in which merciless rebels attack the city. The director has also co-written the screenplay with his brother, Drew Dowdle, who is producing the project with Michel Litvak, David Lancaster & Gary Michael Walters (Drive, Legion, The Hole). The Coup is set to be released on March 6, 2015 by the Weinstein Company. Beltrami (World War Z, Scream, 3:10 to Yuma) also has the sci-fi thriller Snowpiercer starring Chris Evans coming up. teaser-trailer.com/the-coup-movie-starring-pierce-brosnan-and-owen-wilson/Plot: “A young family who relocate from America to South East Asia only to find themselves caught up in the middle of a violent revolution. As the situation intensifies and as foreigners around them are being imprisoned and executed, the family is soon forced to seek refuge. Own Wilson and Lake Bell play the roles of the American husband and wife, while Pierce Brosnan is the heroic US government official.” The plot synopsis doesn’t reveal in what country the story takes place, but that last picture with the propaganda poster hints the story is actually set in Vietnam. The film was filmed in Thailand though where ironically a military coup did happen a few months ago. Anyway, glad to see that Pierce Brosnan will once again save the day! The release date of The Coup is set to March 6, 2015. ============== If you click on the link, you can click on the pictures and see them in larger form (the site won't let me link to the larger pictures). There are also some other pictures in the link that don't have Pierce in them.

www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/owen-wilson-pierce-brosnan-action-770940Owen Wilson-Pierce Brosnan Action Movie Gets New Title and Release Date
3:25 PM PST 2/6/2015 by Borys Kit The movie is now titled 'No Escape' and is moving from March 6 to September 2, 2015.
The Coup, the action thriller that stars Owen Wilson, Lake Bell and Pierce Brosnan, is getting a title change and a date change. The movie is now titled No Escape and is moving from March 6 to September 2, 2015. One reason for the title change, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter, is that the name tested poorly with audiences, who didn’t know what the heck a “coup” was. John Erick Dowdle directed the movie and co-wrote it with his brother, Drew Dowdle. Dowdle, Michel Litvak, David Lancaster are the producers. The story centers on an American businessman (Wilson) as he and his family settle into their new home in Southeast Asia. Suddenly finding themselves in the middle of a violent political uprising (ie, a coup), they must frantically look for a safe escape as rebels mercilessly attack the city.

Owen Wilson movie, Pierce Brosnan action taken in recent Thai, renamed as "No Escape" position screened September 2 in USA queue. Not surprising. Weinstein loves to move release dates and pull things at the last minute and there's been no official poster or trailer which signaled a move would happen. I'm really not crazy about the title change since it's so generic and has been used for several other movies. Embarrassing.

Interesting article I found on Tumblr talking about movie making and how it might pertain to No Escape ... 101-to-la.tumblr.com/post/113004762378/the-movie-landscape-continues-to-change-i-justThe movie landscape continues to change. I just noticed that John Cusack and Adrien Brody have done a movie called ‘Dragon Blade’, which made over $100 million in China but has not opened, and may never, in the U.S. That’s pretty good for actors with their profiles and it pretty clearly indicates a shift in the market. 'No Escape' is another odd bird. It takes place in Thailand (or some other Asian country) where rebels attack a city and Owen Wilson's character must get his family out in one piece. What's strange is Wilson in such a dramatic role, and the fact this is set in Asia — two factors that puts this movie at odds with American sensibilities. We're simply not going to line up for this one. We don't care about coups, and Wilson isn't thought of as a dramatic tough guy. But, people in Asia will, and they don’t care that Wilson is in this or don’t know his brand well enough to feel like something is out of place. What I don’t get is Pierce Brosnan’s character. He plays a guy who helps Wilson get his family out. But, why another American? Why would Asian audiences want to see an American help another American get away from crazy Asians with rifles? Wouldn’t an Asian actor in Brosnan’s role been better? Doesn’t add up. 'No Escape' could very well make gobs of cash, just not in the U.S. It's not about us, about Hollywood movies that cater to American audiences, anymore. Not that that's news, but with 'Dragon Blade' clearing $100m without even playing in the U.S., it looks like things have shifted into a higher gear. If 'No Escape' rakes — with Owen Wilson in that role — it'll be interesting to see how future productions are put together.

Hmmm... Dragon Blade made $100m in China mainly because it's star is Jackie Chan.
As a Chinese production it also takes a much higher % of the theatrical gross than a foreign production which get on avg just 25% (as opposed to the more usual 40-50% from other foreign markets or the 55%+ from US markets). The non Chinese productions that do best in China are big US tent poles. Also, as big as the Chinese market is and as large as it's growing they do very little ancillary business with DVD/VOD because of bootlegging and piracy.

Interesting, Ace. Thanks for adding that perspective. I'm not that knowledgeable on the business side of film making, so it's nice to hear a different side of the story.
