Malibu Library Grand Opening Just Around the Corner
County of Los Angeles Public Library
In just two short days the temporary Malibu Library will shut its doors leaving just over two weeks until Sunday, April 22 when the refurbished Malibu Library will re-open.
The Malibu Library, located on Civic Center Way, was established in 1970. This branch of the County of Los Angeles Public Library was built in 1963 and has remained untouched, for the most part, since that time.
With service to the approximately 18,000 Malibu locals, the City of Malibu and the County began to set aside money to renovate the widely used public space. With $5.7 million needed to refurbish the library, the County of Los Angeles set aside excess funds and The Malibu Library Fundraising Task Force, raised the final $500,000 for the project that began September 7, 2010.
According to www.malibucity.org “The renovation will include a new children’s area, teen services area, group study room, seating, teen computers, kitchen, copy center, Story Time nook and Frie
nds of theLibrary Book Store. The community room will be enlarged and remodeled, and the lobby will be redesigned and decorated with Malibu tile. Murals on the walls will recount Malibu’s history and an outdoor
reading garden and patio will be connected via a walkway to Legacy Park.”
Councilmember Pamela Conley-Ulich suggested increasing the library hours from 37 hours per week up to 50 hours, including Sundays in a Regular Malibu City Council meeting on February 27, 2012. Conley-Ulich also endorsed gathering $100,000 for acceded protection.
The new ecological and LEED-certified library will have a Grand Opening celebration on Earth Day, starting at 11:00. The dedication ceremony will have speeches from guest speakers Pierce Brosnan and Dick Van Dyke as well as nominated administrators. There will be outdoor entertainment including live music, authors from the area, games, and much more.
While there is no library access for just over two weeks, Malibu citizens are encouraged to head to the nearby County libraries in Agoura Hills and Topanga. The book drops at the Malibu Library will stay open so materials can be returned leisurely.
