Leaving Hanalei / 12 July 2011
Yesterday we had a wonderful farewell. It touches our souls how warm people are towards us. Every crew-member was presented by the skippers to the community and gifts were exchanged with Uncle John and his people. Billy Richards said that they were just giving back a little bit of the 30 years of hospitality they had received on the islands. But for us it was much much more. Much more than these very good meals, more than the live music every evening and the land we were hosted on. This heartfelt ceremony ties us closer to Kaua’i, to this green beautiful land and these incredibly kind people. Friendships and bonds have been created…. a warm light in our hearts which will carry us through rough seas and stormy weather.
Today we did the last provisioning and while we were paddling these massive amounts of bananas, coconuts and other fresh stuff to the vaka, suddenly Keely and Pierce Brosnan showed up, asking if they could visit the vaka. They got a lift to Hine Moana and walked around the canoe. Both have been working on saving the ocean, with different NGOs, for decades. When they got off the vaka, Keely said she will write a blog about us and follow our voyage. She said the message we carry is very important. Maybe they will be there to welcome us in LA and with their friends.
The kaupapa is strong. It touches people. We were happy to welcome two very nice people, two strong ocean protectors, Keely and Pierce, on our vaka. We take their spirit with us while sailing to San Francisco and further.
Mahalo to all the people on Kaua’i and in Hawai’i for having us, and for making our stay so nice. We are rested and strengthened, physically and spiritually.
And now we’re off…..
A very happy Hine Moana crew
;D
