Thanks, Ace, for sharing this. What a nice find. I like the way the story grapples with all the (seeming) "contradictions in terms" in Steele and Laura's relationship. Very well expressed, IMO, and a lovely resolution at the end.

Lauryn, I am also looking forward to reading more of your RS Fanfic on your new site. I loved "Orchestrated Steele", too. And "Lost Art of Steele"; being an artist myself, I really appreciated the sensual aspects of this story. Not to mention, it was pretty hot, too! Patricia That's a relief! I think with writers it can be like actors who don't like to watch themselves in sex scenes, it rather lacks that element of spontaneity once you've choreographed it. The audience must be having more fun than you are, LOL! I'm glad that as an artist you were satisfied of the mechanics elsewhere, too. Best to do it simply. Like Mr. Steele, I've had a bit of art training, tried my hand at some things. Really that story was kind of a flight of fancy, and more than I would generally allow. I suspect Steele is more clearly an autodidact -- but then again, he got in and out of University in his own unorthodox way, and didn't stay long, so that part's not beyond the pale. I thought of not putting the story up on the site because I'd probably write it differently -- now that I know more what I'm doing, LOL! (First time and all. Oy!) There are some formatting things I want to check and then maybe you'll see it again.

I love the refrain "he takes me to the moves" and references to falling but the the most telling line is probably "Laura is always scared." She is, and it has ltitle to do with the dangers of her profession. Ace

Ace I like that the relationship was presented as a kind of conundrum to be solved, (or not, LOL!) but, I agree, that line about always being scared did stand out in sharp relief. More true than even Laura realizes, with her tendency to project many of her fears onto Steele as the sole cause, rather than as a reflection of herself.

Congratulations, Lauryn and Ace! The site looks very good. I enjoyed reading Orchestrated Steele and am keen to read more of Lauryn's fanfic. Thanks. Didn't Duke Ellington say, "If it looks good, it is good"? (Well, not exactly, more like "sounds good" but it's the spirit of the thing that counts.) I owe it all to Ace's virtuosity. I hope I can keep up appearances with the content portion of the site, LOL!

My, this topic could use a lift.
Since YS just guessed my quote from "Steele Crazy After All These Years" I'll confess that I recently got the urge to go back and read her fanfic "Paris When It Steeles." I love the title because the story itself has the mood-setting charm of a good song lyric even while it stays very grounded in character. For the uninitiated, it's about the complications of "winning" Steele Crazy's bet (weekend in Paris vs one year of Steele's life) both romantic and otherwise. All that intrigue aside, how could any story go wrong in referencing one of my favorite movies, "How to Steal a Million"? Anyway, it's my hot Fanfic Pick of the Week.

Lauryn, what a great idea and a very deserving hot pick of the week. Believe me, considering how many times I had to read the story (as the editor on call) the fact that I pop it up in Word from time time and re-read it shows how good it is. And now that you've mentioned it I'm going to make some time and read it again this week.

I don't know what enthusiasm might exist for a hot Fan Fic Pick of the Week. There seem to be a lot of new members on the Steele boards and lists, so maybe there's a new audience discovering what's out there. I think we tried to do something similar once on the RS Fic list with authors volunteering one of their stories to be fodder for discussion. Not just the new stories, as per usual, but things could be from the list's back catalogue. It happened during one of those (rather frequent) times when postings on the list were few and far between. I remember the idea had something like the shelf life of a carton of milk, LOL! There wasn't a good mechanism for choosing a range of stories and the authors had to agree to have their work discussed and to have public feedback, etc. Besides all that, in a fit of optimism we forgot how hard it was even to get comments on the newer stuff. Getting to the point, since it's a truth universally acknowledged that feedback is such a chore ** -- to avoid this angst a Pick of the Week could be a short paragraph preview or blurb, as is done with book or movie recommendations to whet a potential consumer's appetite. (That's what I tried to do up there with YS's story, "Paris When It Steeles.") Maybe it should just happen on impulse, or should we arrive at a shortlist of members here who'd be willing to contribute picks for a while? Anyone? Bueller? Not to tread on the Fic List's toes, but this wouldn't be primarily discussion oriented, but more for fun and FYI. **Discussion or comments could be welcome, but not required.

I'm flattered. Thank you. I didn't reply earlier because I missed this thread and only now noticed it. BTW, Ace provided the title. I think I was stuck and she provided quite a few to chose from. How to Steal a Million, of course, was impossible not to use; it's such a great movie! I like the story, too; that's why I was so appaled when some newbie on RSFic list suggested the idea for the next challenge. I even typed a long reply, but thought I'd post it only if the idea didn't die on its own, which it did anyway. I'm all for discussing fanfic, but I wonder if we should discuss stories of authors that do not visit this board. On the other hand, if the work is online, why not? We can send the author email, out of courtesy.

I'm flattered. Thank you. I didn't reply earlier because I missed this thread and only now noticed it. I assumed you thought your work was so self-evidently brilliant there was no need to comment. <wink> The impulse behind a Hot Fanfic Pick of the Week (or Month, or whatever) was to spotlight stories that we liked by posting a brief summary or recommendation. I didn't want to preclude deep discussion but since that tends to bring up a cartload of issues (such as the one you mention) this would be primarily to endorse rather than to critique, that is, in a "Have You Read Any Good Fanfic Lately?" sort of way. I wouldn't think any authors would mind that. If their stuff is online and out there this would be a pretty benign use of it. Since no one (except possibly Ace or YS?) seems to have an irresistible urge to do this (unless they're being really quiet about it, LOL!) I guess we can leave it on the shelf.

I read "Paris When It Steeles" the other night, and enjoyed it very much. I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't read it yet, but I can say so much: The characters are there as if you were watching another episode. Very well done and a nice idea for a continuation.

It's been out there for a couple of years so I think it's more than OK to discuss specifics. Anyone who hasn't read it yet can avert thier eyes, or better yet go off and read it themselves.

Well, it was my point a bit to entice those who haven't read it yet. I hope to be more specific as soon as I have more time on my hands after all that Christmas madness.
