...and what makes them worthwhile... the film reviews! they're a riot. Eg:

Even monkeys don't like the word "retarded." (while I admit that the essence of the comment is likely true) cg

Retarded is a perfectly valid word when used in the right context; one would have to be emotionally or intellectually limited to spend money on this film. Monkeys can be so senstive. Ace

LOL, that's funny. The scary thing is that somebody will spend money on it. Stephanie

Ace You're probably right, on both counts. But I have a brother-in-law who is on the staff of a major not-for-profit agency which deals with disabled people in our city, and I know that "retarded" is more frequently used as a derogatory term in much the same way that other folks would use an ethnic or racial slur. Aside from that, I think monkeys have better sense no matter our limitations or challenges; we wouldn't spend money on most of the movies humans do. There aren't too many organ grinders hiring these days anyway. cg

Sadly, it's another word bastardized (ooh there's another) and crudened by society, it's unfortunate but it happens. But I refuse to lose perfectly valid words to the phillistines. Well there seem to have been quite a few foolish tasteless undecerning monkeys who've made some change organ grinding; that piece of filmmaking genius will rack up $12.5m this weekend. Not great for a wide release but still too much! Just about the same as the latest lame duck Harrison Ford film (no wonder he's signed on for Indy 4, of course he could do better films if he'd take a pay cut!) Ace

I know what you mean - I've used that "b" word myself and had people look at me, horrified. Another one that will get an overreaction is "niggardly." (Look it up, folks, it mean "stingy," and it has not a thing to do with race.) Too many Americans with vocabularies that didn't make it past grade school. cg

The film or the review? I thought the review was rather hysterically funny. Most likely far more entertaining than the film which strangely seems to have a PG rating! Ace

What the review says is in the film. Yes, the review itself is humorous. Oddly enough, after reading this, I saw the review in our local paper which gave it high marks! I should make a copy of that and send it to the woman who wrote it. LOL

Should we be grateful to bad films for hysterical reviews? Or should we be afraid that those who lurv them bad movies will ban the hysterical reviews as being inapropriate, flaming, and offencive to the creators of such materpieces (movies, not reviews)?

And we may have a winner for worst of the year... it would be hard to believe there's something worse coming... but then the hysterically scathing reviews would be worth it. LOL Currently a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 2.2 out of 10 average (or 1 out of 5 stars) we have Gigli! www.rottentomatoes.com/m/Gigli-1124237/reviews.phpHopefully this will mean an end to Bennifer "news" coverage. The more reviews I see of Gigli, the worse they get. I haven't read such things since...um...well...Apocalypse Now, maybe? And, oh, what was that other one...shoot...a desert thing...oh, yeah. Ishtar. But I don't even really remember what those said, just that they were panned. Gigli seems to be a step - if not a whole staircase - below panned. I'd include the one I just read but I lost where it was. Don't worry, you can find one anywhere. Hey, Ray - did your sister go see it? cg

Alas CG, no she hasn't seen it yet... It's just that every single time she sees the promos for the film, she starts bugging me about it "Ooh, ooh! Rayna! Let's go see that movie Gigli!" And then I say "You've got to kidding me... I'm not going to see that crap movie and waste my money"

Ray send her some of the quotes! www.thegate.ca/news/more.php?id=236_0_1_0_MCollected Thoughts: Reviewers Hate 'Gigli' Every so often, a movie comes along that critics hate so much, they just can't stop themselves from finding new ways to insult the director, actors, and any person that happened to come within 50 yards of the production. Gigli appears to be this year's prime target - the Swept Away of 2003, as it were. Starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, the film has gotten a wide range of press already, and even though many critics are saying it's not really the worst film ever made, it's still so bad that RottenTomatoes.com currently has the film rated at 5%... and yes, that's out of 100% Here's what some critics had to say in the reviews: "Simply put, Gigli is the worst movie in years; it's insulting and displays an almost complete ignorance of moviemaking. Gigli is so unrelentingly bad that people may want to see it just as a bonding experience; viewers (read: victims) will want to talk and comfort each other afterwards." - San Francisco Examiner, By Jeffrey M. Anderson [who gave it 0 stars] "If miscasting was a crime, this movie would be proof of a felony. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez fit their characters like a glove -- if the glove in question belonged to O.J. Simpson." - CNN.com, By Paul Clinton. "Affleck's hood is about as tough as a marshmallow. For all his Technicolor tattoos and upper-body bulk, he's a preening, delusional fool no self-respecting gangster would hire to pick up his dry cleaning." - HollywoodReporter.com, By Kirk Honeycutt. MORE... "...this is a movie best experienced for the sheer, balls-out bravura of its badness. Like Showgirls, it's a landmark of inadvertent entertainment. Bad movies rarely get better." - The Toronto Star, By Geoff Pevere. "Halle Berry, who was originally tagged to play the Lopez role, must be glad she dodged this bullet. Lopez and Affleck should fire their agents. Or take a long, hard look at themselves in the mirror." - Jam! Movies, By Lyn Cockburn. "While it's not a total train wreck, this Bennifer comedy is bad for many reasons. In a plot that's just as weak as it sounds, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez play mobster types who kidnap a mentally challenged kid (Justin Bartha) in order to stop his brother from testifying against their boss. And, yes, J.Lo plays a lesbian." - Eonline.com ==================================== Oh and there is some modicum of justice in the film world, it BOMBED at the box office!!! Of course it still made more than it should have, one dime would have been more than it should have. Lucky lucky Halle Berry. X-Men 2's schedule was so postponed so many times and so screwed up she had to pass on Gigle and when her scheduled opened up she got DAD instead.... Doesn't say much for her script choosing abilites though.... EEK! Ace

"You've got to kidding me... I'm not going to see that crap movie and waste my money" ROTFL!! Has she read *any* of the reviews? I mean, we're talking seriously oderiferous here (and yes, that's a real word). ;D cg Apparently Ace and I posted right about the same time. Very funny additions, Ace, and still not what I saw - but all the same tenor.

Well she is right here on the pull-out-sofa-bed-thingy so I could show her; I'm just stuck on whether I should dedide to be a good sister and try to warn her with the reviews or a bad sister and let her waste $4.50 and two hours of her life ;D But being a bad sister sounds sooo appealing ;D Edit-ooh ooh! 50th post! I'm not a nomad anymore! Yay!

Wait wait, scrolling back... Apocalype Now was panned? By who? Tthe film is a masterpiece, surreal and creepy as heck but a masterpiece none the less. But your post reminds me of another Gigli review.... to paraphrase... how do you pronounce Gigli... Ishtar. ;D Even funnier Ben Affeck has been defending it saying it's his best work as an actor. Oh my!!! If that doesn't say it all about Affleck as an actor... he finally admits it, evidently rancdily laughably stinky is as good as it gets. Ace
