So if the Miami date is not considered an official release date, then what is it?
It's not unusual for an independent film to take more than year after completion for a release date. It's actually more usual than not because they take special positioning on the calendar. Matador was released more than a 1 1/2 after filming was done (and almost a year after it's premiere at Sundance). What's strange is that they're even considering this Miami (?!) thing in a month and they have no poster or trailer.

Are you talking about the US or Canada? Does that mean the Miami July 27 date is off? Or that it's the only date and city that gets it? Frankly if that's their idea of a release pattern I'd rather not have it and have them wait to find a better release date and planned strategy with actual marketing. Has anyone actually e-mailed Lionsgate or Maple pictures? Ace. Actual marketing? Ace, you crazy kid! What a concept! Meanwhile, back at Lionsgate (where arses and elbows all look alike) as you mentioned, it does seem like weird science to pick Miami because "The Matador" did well there, not without some other Miami connection for BOAW-S. Makes you go huh? when Matador did quite well, thanks, in NY and LA . And anyhow it's pretty much apples and oranges as to the type of film and how The Matador was positioned after its run at Sundance and more than a few Speedo makin' headlines here and there. Not to mention a real poster and a trailer, eh? Oh, and a recognizable title.. And I thought that it was only economists playing around with stock market dynamics that used dart board theory. If they ever get around to "actual marketing" they have the three main actors all coming off strong acting efforts, well, in the case of Gerard Butler, maybe not so much, but 300 did make a lot of cash even if it was all about well-toned abs, full throated yells, and fun things to do in gym class.

Jeff Wells gives a shout out to the former Spring Break in Bosnia in his recent column. There's a trailer link, too. hollywood-elsewhere.com/archives/2007/06/gere_guns_and_b.phpNow that I have a little more of an inkling about the movie I can kind of see why they might have wanted to change the title to something that sounds a bit less like it could moonlight as a Borat spinoff, LOL! Though there's a good share of gallows humor, it looks like Shepard is making some serious moves with the story and action. Still don't think much of "The Hunting Party" as a title, though. Check out Richard Gere's dye job and heavy tan! Throw in some shades and a black turtleneck and he could be Robert Evans, LOL! Now, if Shepard weren't attempting to make a "thoughtful actioner" that gag would be fun. I wonder what chat-up lines work in Bosnian bars?

I was sent an e-mail from the GB.net admin and I think I can pass on the pertinent part of her e-mail. ======================================= It will open on July 27, 2007 in Miami, Florida only. Depending on how it does in that city, it may expand to other cities. We are organizing a fan charity event for Gerard Butler fans, as well as Pierce Brosnan and Maria Bello fans for that weekend. If any of your visitors are interested, they can contact us as events@gerardbutler.net or visit this link: gerardbutler.net/haven/index.php?showtopic=55854We are hoping to have a Meetup posted at Meetup.com shortly for all movie fans to login and more easily participate in the event. ===================================== I have no information yet on whether Icon or Barker indicated that this information will be released to the major film sites so that the general public would be made aware of it. I haven't seen mention of it at Box Office Mojo, Coming Soon, Yahoo, Film Jerk or any other major general film site. I haven't seen or heard mention of a poster, trailer or even film stills. I've asked the GB admin for any further details and if I get them will of course post the information here. So far the Official Icon site still has the film listed as BOAW and has the same preliminary art it had before the film was even made.

Did you get anymore information from GB.net? And I've checked Infinity Media's site and they still have the pre-production stuff up and nothing at Maple Pictures or Lionsgate Films too...

No more information. I was told they might get more today when the Lionsgate or Icon representative came back from vacation.

From Gerrybutler.netHere's what you can do to help. This is along the same lines as what fans did to get Dear Frankie in their theaters. UNITED STATES: 1. Contact your local independent theaters and maybe a few multiplexes. The multiplexes are not always as willing to go out and solicit distributors, but it's worth a shot. Request, politely, and with facts that you would like to see Shattered in their theater. List the stars, the rating (the MPAA has given it an R rating) and that Lionsgate is the distributor. Here is the contact information for Lionsgate: Lionsgate 2700 Colorado Ave. Santa Monica, CA 90404 Phn: 310-449-9200 Fax: 310-255-3870 2. Lionsgate has a forum for movie goers. As of yet, there is no topic set up for Shattered. That's not to say anyone can sign up and PM the admins there to request one though. Maybe a show of support for the film on their own forums will give them incentive to get this film out to the masses. Got to forums.lionsgate.com and register to participate in their forums. PM the "administrator" politely, that you would really like the chance to discuss this film on their forums. Don't be rude about the movie missing from the list, just simply request it be added. CANADA: 1. Contact your local independent theaters and maybe a few multiplexes. The multiplexes are not always as willing to go out and solicit distributors, but it's worth a shot. Request, politely, and with facts that you would like to see Shattered (it may still be titled Butterfly on a Wheel in Canada though, so use both titles) in their theater. List the stars, the rating (the MPAA has given it an R rating, not sure what the Canadian rating is) and that Maple Pictures is the distributor. Here is the contact information for Maple Pictures: Maple Pictures 416-944-0104 info@maplepictures.com 2. Same for Canadian fans, use the Lionsgate forums above.

Lionsgate behavior is strange to say the least. And this weekend they're releasing "Captivity" -- another supposed horror dud in over 1,000 theaters.
Some quotes about the film from a couple of posters that have seen the film on the IMDB (I've read a few others -- mostly just a line saying it was very good and have yet to read a negative review)
Comments from cockeye991 (Wed Jun 27 2007 19:29:05)
Damn, he's on a roll isn't he.... The Matador, Seraphim Falls and now Butterfly on a Wheel. 3 excellent movies in a row. Way to go Pierce, thank god you're not Bond anymore cause those 3 movies are way better.
I just finished watching it just before writing the post and believe me, its good.
The thing is that I currently live in Bahrain and the British embassy over here supplies us with movies that we can watch in their own theatre, so I asked about BOW about 2 months ago and 3 days ago i was told that they got it and its going to play in the theatre, so I don't think I can help you with the distribution.
The movie has a really dark atmosphere that I liked and the performances are top notch especially Maria Bello's and Brosnan's. The violence is not gratuitous but I thought that it was a little disturbing.
Hope that helps.
From pdehaan (Thu Jul 5 2007 04:16:46)
I saw the film yesterday - it's definately a great thriller with one of the best plot twists I've seen recently. I can also confirm that Lionsgate have set their US release date for July 27th - I believe very limited. Can't understand why there is still no poster or trailer out, the film is great - it deserves a broad audience!
No, unfortunately I cannot confirm where the film will be released. I got the update from Icon Entertainment (international sales) about it, not directly from Lionsgate. I really don't have a clue why this is not released wide, the film reminded me of Ransom but the ending is so much better!
Seeing Pierce as an evil man, taking a happy couple hostage, is something new, but he does it with the same cool charm we saw in The Thomas Crown Affair! Gerard plays an advertising guy, with all the smoothness and style you can expect. Defenitely the opposite of his performance in 300 - and it works..
I saw the film in an industry screening with the Dutch distributor and I can assure you everybody in the room was pleasantly surprised.

Thanks. I hope they don't delete it because it's not in the correct topic -- of course there is no correct topic for the film - thanks to Lionsgate. I think they deleted an earlier post about the film that was placed in one of the other film topics asking for a BOAW/Shattered topic.

I was hoping they'd changed their mind about this idiotic release pattern. Still no poster or trailer. Lionsgate seems to be full of shit about any plans to expand BOAW theatrically. Even though they're calling this a legitimate theatrical opening why did they tell Video Business last week that it was DVD Premiere for the 4th quarter? Not that the film would come to DVD in the 4th quarter which isn't that off for a late summer release (if a bit early) but that it would PREMIERE on DVD.
Here's the article from today:
07/23/2007 03:02:46 PM EDT Video Business
LAS VEGAS—Families and other late adopters are buying more DVDs, driving double-digit sales increases of animated films, TV on DVD and other niche genres, Lionsgate execs said during a presentation last week at its retail summit at the Red Rock Resort Casino here.
Not coincidentally, those are the genres the mini-major focused on as it unveiled its biggest home video slate yet.
President and chief operating officer Steve Beeks said the studio expects to exceed $1 billion in home video revenue in fiscal year 2008 based on its beefed up slate, which includes Oscar hopeful Away From Her , Dane Cook/Jessica Alba romantic comedy Good Luck Chuck , horror mainstay Saw IV and LionsgateÂ’s first Christian release, The Case for Christ .
Beeks said the studio expects first-quarter 2008 revenue to top 2007, when the studio recorded its strongest January ever.
The studio presented internal research showing that consumers older than 50 and younger than 12 spent $1.2 billion more on DVDs last year, while those ages 13 to 49 spent $1.2 billion less on DVDs.
The shift in audience spending has boosted animated sales 67% and TV on DVD 64%, VP of strategic planning and business development Michael Youn said. Educational DVDs, action/adventure movies, musicals, westerns, horror/suspense, fitness and Christian also are growing.
Domestically, the studio expects to see slight declines in DVD in the coming years.
The studio expects overall disc sales to decline a slight 1% through 2011, with new release DVD sales beginning to drop off sharply in 2009, as high-definition disc sales take off. By 2011, the studio forecasts that high-def sales will make up 50% of disc sales.
The mini-major expects in-store rentals to decline 8% a year each year through 2011. However, online rental growth will make up for some of the decline so that overall rental spending will slide only 1%.
A Blu-ray Disc supporter, Lionsgate is predicting that sales of BD movies will continue to outsell HD DVD by greater margins. In 2008, the studio expects BD sales will be four times that of HD DVD, increasing to 20 times HD DVD by 2009.
By 2011, Lionsgate expects video-on-demand to grow to $3 billion in revenue and digital delivery to grow to $2 billion in revenue, together accounting for 19% of home entertainment revenue.
Executive VP and general manager Ron Schwartz and executive VP of marketing Anne Parducci showed off trailers from the studio'’s upcoming home video slate, including Marvel DVD premiere Dr. Strange . Lionsgate is debuting its first two Christian films as part of its partnership with publisher Thomas Nelson: The Case for Christ and Max Lucado 3:16 . The latter is being released at the same time as a book of the same name, and both will get a big marketing push that includes licenses for apparel and other merchandise.
Lionsgate has expanded its deal with Studio Canal to include more of the French-based distributor'’s library in the U.S. Lionsgate and Studio Canal are launching three new DVD lines: the Director Series will include sets of films from such noted filmmakers as Jean Renoir and Luis Bunuel, the Celebrity Series offers stars including Bridget Bardot, and the Meridian Series has noted films such as Diva and Emmannuelle: Special Edition.
The studio'’s fourth quarter will include DVD premiere films Stir of Echoes 2: Homecoming , starring Rob Lowe, and Shattered , starring Pierce Brosnan and Maria Bello.

That seems to be the trend with quite a few movies in the marketplace. Unless the studio is seeing huge dollar signs in revenue generation, they're diverting everything to a DVD release without the wide theatrical circulation. If memory serves correctly, they did the same thing with Seraphim Falls. It was shown in a few choice locations to fulfill the contractual obligation of a U.S. release and then was sent to DVD. The studios have finally figured out that DVD is where the money is being made because fewer and fewer people are willing to go to the theater anymore. They either catch it on a pay-per-view on demand channel or wait for the DVD to come out. It's a shame, but that's the industry these days. If Lionsgate follows suit then everyone will be seeing the movie hit the DVD shelves sometime around Halloween but no later than Thanksgiving.

But Seraphim Falls at least had a theatrical release. It showed in NYC and LA. It had a poster and trailer a month before release. IDP set up a press junket for interviews. The industry and online community was aware it was being released. It was a hard sell because of the genre and the kind of film it was. IDP,a very small distributor, wasn't equipped to market a genre film like SF though they tried to optimizie it by releasing it to mostly western territories but missed many of the larger cities and failed to realize that it would have appealed to college age males becasue iof it's content. But at least there was some effort put into the release.
Lionsgate is meanwhile insisting to ICON that the Florida release is "Official" and yet they haven't reported it to ERC. They haven't alerted any of the film sites or even theatrical chains. They haven't even seemingly shopped the film. The Miami papers don't even know it's opening this weekend even if the ad ran in them. Until today there was no poster. It hasn't been made available to the trades for any reviews. The fact that they're releasing it in Miami of all places is already mindboggling -- that they're not even doing that well is bizarre. Then they claim it's straight to DVD Premiere film a week before it's theatrical relesse. It can't be both. It's incompetent. I'd also have more respect Lionsgate's judgement if they hadn't been releasing abosolute GARBAGE wide and having their films bomb right and left.
Films are made to be seen on the big screen. It's shame that most people will see Seraphim Falls first on a TV -- it blunts the experience. I know DVD and PPV and TV is where most of the money is but this cheapens the theatrical experience and soon will leave all the theaters to be filled with explosions, CGI, horror porn, and fart joke comedies. It's sad. It's also foolish not to use a theatrical run as a commercial for the DVD run. SF has done very well as a very limited release theatrical film on DVD but with a bigger or more effective theatrical push it would have done far better and made Sony/IDP and ICON more money in the long run.
BOAW is a far more mainstream film than SF so it's actually more mind boggling that it's getting the theatrical shaft.
