I think the impression is Butler is bigger because of the 300 baggage. He certainly has muscles here, though really only noticeable in the early scenes without jacket but physical he's not any broader than Pierce is here and he's a little shorter. Regardless physical strength doesn't always equate with fighting abilities and Neil isn't in a position to fight anyway. If Tom was 5 ft tall and 98 lbs he'd still be in charge and able to smack Neil around if he wanted. It is disappointing we don't get more of cut Tom scenes and I hope they at least address that he was supposed to be a cop in the commentary. Merry Christmas to you to!

The review's got some good points. Though ... I couldn't agree with the statements about Butlers muscles and his appearance beeing that much stronger than PB's. Err, wasn't Gerry the one who acted like a big girl's blouse when he got jostled around in the car stunt?<wink> It's a truth universally acknowledged that some male reviewers seem oddly obsessed with what actor can kick another actor's a*s. I remember an especially eye-rolling example of this when some nut job (from the right-of-Attila-the-Hun Wall St Journal Editorial page) was let out of his cage to pen a TCA review. I could swear he harbored a secret desire to see muy macho Steve McQueen run over Pierce with his dune buggy. Generally this has little to do with the merits (or logic) of the film, even in contrast. What to do with the lot of them? A passage from "In the Steele of the Night" comes to mind: "This is getting very boring. Have Murphy give one of them the gun, and let's be done with it." So, has anyone watched the extras? At risk of having my credentials revoked, I admit that I don't have my copy yet. In the Christmas rush I neglected to buy something for myself! Now if Ace tells me she doesn't have hers yet she'll have to do penance by making room in her apartment for a shrine to Pierce with an eternal flame.

"This is getting very boring. Have Murphy give one of them the gun, and let's be done with it." I guess it's the movie reviewer's variation on "My dad could beat up your dad" Lucky for me there's just no way to make room for the shrine or the flame because I haven't picked up the DVD yet either.

I did manage to get my hands on a copy of "Shattered" and so far I've listened to the commentary with the writer and director. It's nearly always fun when you get two Brits together, especially when they are good mates, because it seems there's only so much of the time they can play at being serious "professionals" before they start taking the piss, LOL!
Of course there were parts of the commentary that were enlightening, mind broadening, revealing, nutritious, etc., more on that some other time, but so far some of my favorite bits are the anecdotes about Brosnan and Butler: the car stunt and the unflappable Pierce, and flappable Gerry, what happens at one point to poor Gerry when he flubs his one line in the midst of pages of Pierce dialogue, and how they describe Butler's um, "fan following."

You do realize that according to some that was all orchestrated by Machevellian Pierce to make Gerry look bad in comparison? I still haven't bought the DVD. Do them mention on the commentary why they decided to cut the info that Tom is a cop? I think the fact that he was and knew how cops would react (not to mention civilians in times of stress) was an important plot/character point.

You do realize that according to some that was all orchestrated by Machevellian Pierce to make Gerry look bad in comparison? Maybe PB learned how to scheme in this way from the Borgia, er, I mean the Broccoli family while he was working on Bond. I don't recall that being brought out, or even mentioned. Maybe they talk about it in the other features which I haven't listened to. As per the commentary, they seemed to be fairly invested throughout in walking a fine line with his character so as not to tip off the ending scenes. They did talk briefly about Pierce's Irish accent, which he had chosen to employ from the first day on set. They decided not to include a backstory to explain it but said that its timbre worked for the character because it sounded agressive and angry. They did make an interesting point about his acting, that he was able to express, despite the anger, a wounded quality which added to the mystery for the audience. Perhaps the cop background was something that Pierce had come up with, like the accent, that wasn't in the original script, was considered, but later was nixed. It certainly could have worked to explain how deftly his character could manipulate Gerry, and Tom's having the wherewithal to carry off the scheme. If they felt they had to be cautious in not dropping too many clues, they still might have used it as part of the reveal at the end when we learn that Tom and Abby have been working together. From that photo we know of of Tom in the Irish police uniform it may well be that they once considered showing the audience earlier, or that maybe the implication of Ireland and "the troubles" would be used as a red herring as to motive.

... or put some more of this deleted material on the DVD There's really little there. When they talked in the commentary about the scene when Tom left the hotel room with Abby and the two are in the car and alone for the first time and Barker mentions the pre-cut version as "one of the most beautiful scenes of the film" I thought - oh why don't you show us in the extras? The little left of it we see in the movie is really rough cut. Pierce mentions the cop background in the making-of as if it was clear the audience would get to know the fact at the end of the film. He seemed so committed to this character. And then from the director and writer really no word on this. Too bad. The audio commentary is on one side really really cool and fun to listen to. Also MY favourite part so far, how they deliver the background and comments on the car-crash scene. Hilarious! One has to laugh each time. And one wonders what could have happend if it had gone wrong. On the other side I felt like, okay that was the award-worthy commentary show, now I still want to have a few questions answered seriously. I'm afraid there's no chance to get that. When you listen how engaged and positive everyone's talking there about the film, it's so hard to imagine, what actually did happen to bring this complete silence these days over this project from everyone involved. Bah, what a bad title! But at least they haven't added some horribly inadequate English subtitle to it which seems to become more and more popular around here A quote from A. Pope is a quote. Period. No translation needed at all. Sorry, I don't agree with that. I am fairly certain that Alexander Pope is quite unknown around here and that not many people ever have heard of this quote. So in ways of marketing and sales strategies I guess they had to change the title - but they definitely could have come up with a much better one!
