Water Shield as in shield from water would be my guess as to the translation which makes sense for a clothing line originally sprung from raincoats. I think you are right with this one, the translation of aquascutum meaning something that protects from water certainly fits a brand that at least at its beginning made only raincoats.

What can I say... Pierce just makes these clothes shine. He does look somewhat ruthless on the photos, though. But still very handsome.

A Milan fashion site states (via google translator): The brand that ago head to the Renown society has chosen the former James Bond Pierce Brosnan like star of the next campaign. After England and Japan, the next stages of the international development of the brand are Italy and United States. -- Valentina Capelvenere So the campaign might be coming to the U.S. afterall.

Ooh, Thomas Crown, back in town! Or more properly, in this context, the City. My, the SMA in these photos warms my acquisitive heart, though I can see Rene Russo looking daggers at yet another barely twenty-something on his arm, LOL! Aquascutum does have a major pedigree though, as noted, it's been stodgy and languishing for a while. One of those articles does say there will be a tactical campaign in the US. I assume something aimed at specific marget segments, magazines and the like extolling the virtues of the luxe life. It would cost them a pretty profligate penny to have targeted ad buys on US television though that would be wonderfully unexpected. Unless I'm wrong on the general brand awareness, in the US I think it would be more about selling it almost new as opposed to a reinvention. This reminds me that I really truly do need to dig through the magazine jungle in my house and find the a Playboy magazine from around 1984 or thereabouts. It featured PB in an homage to the trenchcoat. Jaw droppingly gorgeous photos they were, too -- trust me -- even if there was a dash of 80's excess in some of the styles. I despair of ever finding that issue, though, it may be lost. Anyone else on this board that has it?

Alas, no copy of the '84 Playboy, but the SMA has always done wonders for a trenchcoat. In fact Steele at the train station in his trench is probably the highlight of the entire Season 5. I think this campaign is strictly print, so no TV ads. The overall campaign though is part of a 40 million pounds rebranding so they're spending the bucks. Not only did they hire PB but the photgrapher is one of the top fashion photographers and they went oustide with their advertising. Pringle (of pringle sweaters) recently went under a smiliar un-stuffying rejuvenation and under the same CE. In an all roads bit of info, Pringle was to provide the sweaters for DAD but were beatan in a British sweater fight by Ballantyne -- with the SMA doing wonders for their black sweaters and their sales.

WWDAQUASCUTUM'S NEW MAN: Aquascutum has turned to a former James Bond for its fall ad campaign. The British brand famous for its trenchcoats has tapped Pierce Brosnan for the ads, shot by Mario Sorrenti at London's Somerset House on the Thames. The campaign is the first major image statement from Kim Winser, who joined the company in April as president and chief executive from Pringle. She said Brosnan was an easy choice. "We were looking for someone iconically British, elegant and stylish," Winser said. "We think Pierce is the epitome of elegance — in a very powerful way." The ad features model Julia Stegner alongside Brosnan, and Winser said the idea was to portray a "power couple." In the ads, Stegner is wearing a selection of Manolo Blahnik shoes. Winser said Blahnik would also design shoes for the women's runway show, which will take place at a former post office in central London on Sept. 20. There's a slight hiccup with the Brosnan ads, though: The star won't be seen in the U.S. for copyright reasons. The Aquascutum collection won't be sold in America anyway this season, said Winser, although the ads — with just Stegner — will run in the September issues of V and W magazine, the sister publication of WWD. Other titles to carry the full campaign include British and French Vogue, L'Uomo Vogue, and British Vanity Fair. — Samantha Conti

Aquascutum poaches top Pringle marketer
08/31/2006 11:51:14 AM EDT MARKETING
Luxury-clothing retailer Aquascutum has recruited Pringle head of marketing Charlotte Thomas as global communications director.
Thomas has been given the brief of building Aquascutum's profile as a quintessentially British brand, with the aim of emulating companies such as Burberry.
Tomas' appointment follows Aquascutum's poaching of Pringle chief executive Kim Winser in April.
Aquascutum is currently running its first campaign since Winser joined the company, which is part of a pounds 40m relaunch of the brand. It features actor Pierce Brosnan, who is also the retailer's brand ambassador.
One of Winser's first decisions was to hire fashion specialist agency View Creative to create the campaign, which will run predominantly in fashion and lifestyle magazines in the UK, Japan, Korea, Italy and China.
Prior to the agency appointment, the company created its advertising in-house.

The Aquascutum site has been updated with some photos in flash. A couple of the earlier ones in larger form, and a few new ones. I've snagged them and put them up on my gallery HEREI'd so love to have them all larger, especially this one: pbfiles.t35.com/gallery/aquascutum7.jpgor maybe especially this one: pbfiles.t35.com/gallery/aquascutum8.jpgOK, all of them. Has anyone seen any of the ads in a magazine yet?

Oh, for god's sake these are gorgeous! In search of those ads I flipped through a couple of UK and US Vogues, but no such luck yet.

PB won't be a US magazine because it conflicts with another contract. European & Japanese magazines are a much better bet. From the BBC today: In pictures: Aquascutum catwalk show -- with #11 being: At the pub, actor Pierce Brosnan is more than just the face of Aquascutum. "Shaken, not stirred," quips one drinker. The Bond-image may be here to stay. Text/photos: Jorn MadslienAck, the photo is folded and someone has a beer on the edge of it! Heresy!

Rights be damned, I've just seen this picture adorning a window of one of the shops downtown Boston!

I hope NYC proves to be as lawless as Boston. How big was it in the window and were you tempted to steele it? Ace

The size of the window - pretty big, though I've seen bigger windows. I was tempted to get a better look, but had to pass - I was looking for a street parking with two back-seat drivers pointing out my options (needless to say neither can drive,) and Boston is the kind of city where everyone wants to be where your car already is, so I couldn't gape for too long.

From Netnessie -- Click thumbnail for huge gorgeous ad up at Imageshack Just picking my jaw up off the floor, LOL! My, opulence is bliss when it comes in a package like that -- and the clothes aren't bad either! <wink> Lovely contrast, too, with the deep blues and the distinctive salmon pink of the Financial Times.

It is stunning. I think it might be my favorite shot from the campaign. The composition is fantastic, the pose, the clothes, the accessories, the colors. From shades, newspaper, watch -- down to the polka dots in the tie which are tasteful and small and nicely match the handkerchief for a little flair combined with the pinstripes. The suit actually isn't that expensive compared to anything Crown or Bond might wear but it looks top of the line in this photo. Of course the wearer helps considerably. Ace

I also noticeed that his suit jacket has the two pockets on the right side. I notice that his suede jackets he wore at the TIFF had the 3 bottom pocket thing as well. So that detail on the James Bond doll was right (there is that extra pocket for the first class ticket look still being worn today) even though I haven't had a chance to look at the pockets on his Bond suits yet.
