I just got this message from Xenobia: LICENCE REVOKED Written by The CBn Team (11 Feb, 2004, 21:04) As now reported in many news sources around the World (including: Chicago Sun Times & MKKBB), CBn can now confirm from its own sources close to the negotiations for Bond 21 that Pierce Brosnan will not be returning to the role of James Bond. Brosnan had previously stated that he was good for five, perhaps six films, tying him with Sean Connery’s term with Eon. This no longer seems to be case. Brosnan has stepped into the role of 007 four times (Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day). Each film he made did better in the global market than the previous one, with DAD being second only to Thunderball in adjusted total worldwide gross. Die Another Day also saw the theme song nominated for two Grammy Awards and featured an acadamy award winning actress (Halle Berry) as the main Bond girl. However, Brosnan's term was not without controversy. Some fans felt that Bond had gone too far into the world gadgets and pop culture, while others complained about poor plots and dialogue. Brosnan himself was injured in each of the films he made, hurting his back in the final fight sequence of GE, having his face cut open in TND, getting burned in the back while filming TWINE, and most famously, hurting his knee while filming the hovercraft sequence in DAD. Negotiations finalising Brosnan’s Bond 21 contract are said to have ceased, and the search for the next James Bond is well underway. Though no replacement has been found at this time, filming of Bond 21 is still reported to begin in early 2005. Eon Productions is said to be waiting to make an announcement until Brosnan’s successor is named. But even when the sixth James Bond steps into the gunbarrel, for many Bond fans young and old, Pierce Brosnan’s tenure will cast a heavy shadow over those that follow for he succeeded in entertaining millions. CBn wish Mr. Brosnan all the best for the future, and all the best to the forthcoming Bond number six. *** I'm still so shocked. I don't know what to say, except that I hate Eon/MGM.

Will they really fire him without having a replacement right after Barbara Broccoli said the role was his as long as he wanted it? I don't know how reliable CBn's source is, I don't want to insult Xenobia whom we all know and like, but is it possible it's still just rumor monering?

I guess we would all be happy if it was just rumour mongering. But it sounds pretty definite.

Well he can't technically be fired, since they held no option on him and they were suppossedly still negotitating a contract. Unnamed sources have been leaking all over the place but no, no official word from EON or MGM or PB has been made on this.
It's very possible though that negotiations broke down, EON got cheap when they finally had to fork over market value for his services then tried to cover their asses by leaking the stuff about him being too old, and unpopular, and taking the series younger and in a different direction etc, so they could save their hides. The big question though would still be why would MGM go along with it when Bond is so important to them financially.
And why the lapse between leaks and announcement if true? Maybe they want to hire someone first before making the announcement so the media will have something else to focus on besides the fact they just royally screwed up.
But if it's true it seriously sucks and EON can KMA if they want any more of my money or patronage.

From the reputable Latino Review]Regarding to the rumor that "Pierce Brosnan Has Had His License To Kill Revoked!".... This I think is the first word from MGM and not an unnamed source. Still no official statement though by any party. Ace

OK from The Hollywood Reporter:
The Hollywood Reporter, rivalled in the movie trade only by Variety, has run a similar news piece about MGM extending Irish DreamTime's contract for another 3 years - and an MGM denial about Brosnan being axed as 007.
"Upcoming projects for the company include `The Thomas Crown Affair 2` and `Mexicali`, both with Brosnan set to star. The company is prepping `The Matador` in Mexico for Stratus Film Co., and its `Laws of Attraction`, starring Brosnan and Julianne Moore, is set for release April 30 via New Line Cinema."
"The announcement of the deal renewal comes as rumors continue to swirl regarding Brosnan's involvement in the next Bond installment. Various news outlets have reported that Brosnan will not reprise his role as James Bond in the next film, but an MGM spokesperson denied that. Production on the next Bond installment is likely to begin next year."
===================================
So looks like official denial from MGM to one of the Industry's two largest trade papers, the other being Variety which has reported on the same MGM-IDT deal, didn't even mention the Bond rumors just saying PB was expected back for Bond 21.

If this is really a denial of those dreadful rumours, then I'll be doing somersaults around here.

Coming SoonEon Comments on Recent James Bond Rumors Source: Empire OnlineMonday, February 16, 2004 Empire Online talked to Eon Productions directly about the recent rumors that Pierce Brosnan wouldn't be back for James Bond 21, for which MGM has set an official release date on November 18, 2005. The Hollywood trades had all but crushed the rumors saying that Brosnan's production company Irish DreamTime has reupped its deal with MGM. "For now, Pierce Brosnan is our James Bond. We haven't made any statement to say he isn't our James Bond," says Eon's Publicity Manger Catherine McCormack. "It's so difficult to comment when we don't have a script or even a start date." Asked whether Brosnan signed a contract for the next film, she added, "He signed an initial three contract deal with us and from then on it's on a film by film basis. So he hasn't signed one yet." That appears to be normal though, at this stage of film production.

Brosnan Is Our BondExclusive: Empire Online get the word from Eon 16 February 2004 Readers have been emailing us all week about the state of play on Bond 21 following an article in the Daily Mail which quoted a source at Eon Productions as saying that Brosnan's contract to play 007 wasn't being renewed for Bond 21. The status of the Bond film was further confused this weekend when the website Latino Review spoke to MGM who said that the rumours weren't true at all. Eager to put the matter to rest once and for all, Empire Online spoke direct to Eon Productions this morning to find out just what was going on. And let us tell you – they're not happy bunnies there at all. 'All these rumours have come from a newspaper who quoted someone at Eon when they haven't spoken to anyone here,' complained Eon's Publicity Manger Catherine McCormack. 'For now, Pierce Brosnan is our James Bond. We haven't made any statement to say he isn't our James Bond.' 'It's so difficult to comment,' she went on to say, 'when we don't have a script or even a start date.' So has Brosnan signed a contract with you, we asked. 'He signed an initial three contract deal with us,' she explained, 'and from then on it's on a film by film basis. So he hasn't signed one yet.' So there you go. They don't have a script. They don't have a start date. And as of this morning, Eon doesn't even have a signed contract with Pierce Brosnan – but that's apparently completely normal for this stage of film production. Just so you know.

Brosnan as Bond: In or Out?Eon's comments cause further confusion. February 17, 2004 - So is Pierce Brosnan still onboard to play James Bond for a fifth time or has he walked away (or been let go)? Judging by the latest press report, the situation appears to be fluid and the result could go either way. Let's recap: there were a flurry of reports last week claiming that Brosnan had been let go by Eon Productions, the keepers of the 007 franchise, because they deemed him too old and wanted to revamp the series with a lead who could appeal more to the youth demographic, namely Hugh Jackman. Several of these reports had "confirmed" Brosnan's departure. Then the Hollywood trades announced that Brosnan's production company, Irish DreamTime, had extended its first-look pact with MGM (the studio behind Bond). Variety even said "Brosnan is expected to return for a fifth outing as British secret agent James Bond. The 21st pic in MGM's spy series is being readied for a November 2005 release." MGM's vice chairman and chief operating officer Chris McGurk told the trade, "Obviously, we have a great relationship with Pierce from the Bond films, but he and (partner Beau St. Clair) are very talented producers as well, and we're excited to continue our work with them in that capacity. They have some great projects in the works." Does that statement ask us to read between the lines? If the Bond producers don't want Brosnan back is the studio going to placate him with an extension of his production deal? Now Empire Online has contacted Eon Productions to clarify the Brosnan/Bond status but Eon's response has only generated more questions than answers. "All these rumours have come from a newspaper who quoted someone at Eon when they haven't spoken to anyone here," said Eon's Publicity Manger Catherine McCormack. "For now, Pierce Brosnan is our James Bond. We haven't made any statement to say he isn't our James Bond." "For now"? What does that mean exactly? It's a non-denial denial. "It's so difficult to comment," continued McCormack, "when we don't have a script or even a start date. ... (Brosnan) signed an initial three contract deal with us, and from then on it's on a film by film basis. So he hasn't signed one yet." That kind of leaves things open to any possibility, doesn't it? Stay tuned. -- Stax

Oh please.... no more nitpicking and paranoid reading between the lines. It's getting ridiculous. the fact is he doesn't have a contract yet. The fact is he didn't have one for DAD at least as late as July 2001 (maybe later). Even if EON are being cheap they can't possibly be stupid enough, I can't see MGM letting them be stupid enough not to pay PB to play Bond for Bond #21 when their entire studio lives and dies with his very very lucrative Bond.

That's just because they think that a Bond related headline sells better. And when there's nothing new, they stick with the older stuff.

Let the rumor mill begin again! Coming SoonPierce Brosnan Says His 007 Future is Opaque Source: Variety Sunday, February 29, 2004 Variety chatted with one of the many superstars at the Oscars Night Before party, Pierce Brosnan, who noted he'd completed four films in a row. As for whether he'll be back for another outing as James Bond, Brosnan said that commitment was "opaque." It appears the rumors from a few weeks ago, that said his participation in James Bond 21 was iffy, weren't that far off after all.

Evidently every single reporter at that Bob Shaye/New Line party asked him the same question. ;D NY Post: Cindy AdamsMarch 5, 2004 -- IT was A Moment. It was at the extrava gant party given by Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, the New Line Cinema lords behind "The Lord of the Rings." The hilltop home of Bob and Eva Shaye had 900 guests. Little folks like Sean Connery, James Caan, Ted Turner, Shirley MacLaine, Paris Hilton, Robert Duvall. And those were just the ones in one small knot in one small group in one small corner of one large room. Plus Mr. and Mrs. Pierce Brosnan, two of the handsomest people on this planet. Although nothing concrete has heretofore been said, whispers of succession in the kingdom of James Bond have been rumored. So I ask, what's with the 007 franchise? Is Pierce doing the next one? He said: "Well, I really can't say. Actually, it's not for me to say. I mean, I don't know. I'm certainly willing. I would think, I guess, that the people you should probably be asking are the producers, not me." We then went on to another topic. The sense was that what began as polite conversation, turf you could tread upon in a party atmosphere, had veered into uncharted territory. That it might have been the first time he's spoken about this. That he was of no mind to go further. That, in fact, he might have said more than he wished to say. I only know for sure what I, personally, wish to say. And that is, Pierce Brosnan is gorgeous, talented, a great and nifty James Bond. The perfect James Bond. Urbane, suave, smooth, all you expect of 007. We do not any of us need an 008.

As I am sure you all know, Pierce was on Entertainment Tonight on the 23rd. On its website, ET ran a poll, where Pierce was the favorite to come back as Bond, but he was not the clear favorite. He got 42 percent of the vote, followed by, of all people, Orlando Bloom with 38 percent. Hugh Jackman got 14 percent, and Colin Farrell six.
Make of this what you will.
