[Style focus A to Z] O: Omega
"The" supermodel Cindy Crawford chose it. Sexy and witty secret agent James Bond, or better yet, Pierce Brosnan chose it. It has also been on the wrist of Neil Armstrong who set his foot on the moon for the first time in human history. Yes, we are talking about Omega, a watch maker synonymous with its Greek namesake meaning perfection and eternity. Established by Louis Brandt in 1848 in Switzerland, Omega started out as a pocket watch-maker selling timepieces all over Europe. The relatively small boutique grew as it gained a reputation as well as a growing number of people on its waiting list.
After the founder Louis Brandt died, his sons Louis-Paul and Cesar carried on the family business and gradually turned their operation into a complete watchmaker, with an in-house manufacturing system for the manufacture of every part of a watch.
In 1894 the company started making its Omega 19-line caliber, which was invented by Francois Chevillat, one of the most distinguished craftsmen in watch making and who named this revolutionary watch Omega.
Omega has various lines of watches each paired with its own "ambassador." Model and actress Cindy Crawford is the spokesperson for the sophisticated Constellation; tennis player Anna Kournikova for the feminine and pastel-strapped Quadra; and the champion car racer Michael Schumacher for Speedmaster.
But Omega watches - specifically its Seamaster Professional - came to be engraved in everyone's mind after appearing as the key accessory-slash-weapon of James Bond in various 007 movies. The company last year celebrated this match made in heaven with a brand new limited edition Seamaster Professional 007 watch, sporting the legendary 007 logo on its dial.
Since 1930 Omega has merged with 16 other watchmakers including Longines, Briguet, Rado, Tissot and Swatch, turning itself into the largest multi-brand watch group called Swatchgroup by 1998.
