From CNN Español May 30, 2003 (translated by bablefish & me) For the full original article: cnnenespanol.com/2003/econ/05/30/mgm.reut/index.htmlLos Angeles (Reuters) -- . Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., increased by nearly a million units it's initial sales projections for the video and DVD of the latest James Bond film "Die Another Day", due to a strong anticipated demand before the launching next week in the United States. The Bond film, released at the end of last year, has been the greatest success of the MGM ticket office, with almost $430 million in world-wide ticket sales, according to his president Chris McGurk. He also anticipates that it will be the most profitable film in MGM history, after the sales of television, DVD and VHS are entered. In an interview, McGurk said that the sales of DVD and VHS with Pierce Brosnan starring as protaganist super agent 007 surpassed the prognoses of MGM in Great Britain, Germany and France. The copies will go on sale in the U.S. June 3rd. "The sales (in the retail stores) have exceeded our expectations in these territories and we are very, very pleased", affirmed McGurk. In April, MGM stated it anticipated the initial sale of units of DVD and VHS of "Die Another Day" to exceed 14 million. "That can now be elevated to more than 15 million (units)", added McGurk. That is an enormous number, since the most successful film in the history of the United States, "Spiderman ", that was released in 2002, sold 12.7 million units, according to Video Store Magazine. McGurk refused to specify the percentage of the 15 million units that are DVD compared to VHS. But in the 2002, the sales of DVD units eclipsed those of VHS. ===================================== Ace (they evidently don't need my $20. I wonder if they'll consider giving it back )

MGM Ships 16M Die Vids www.scifi.com/scifiwire/art-film.html?2003-06/04/11.00.filmMGM shipped its largest ever initial retail order of DVDs and videos for the June 3 North American release of Die Another Day, Variety reported. The studio shipped 8 million copies of the biggest 007 movie ever, with another 8 million expected to be shipped overseas by the time orders from all countries come in, the trade paper reported. The studio is already taking re-orders for Die in the U.K. and other parts of Europe, where the DVD was released in late April. The title also marks what is believed to be the highest percentage of DVDs for a major release, with 93 percent of all copies being delivered in the U.S. and Canada on the digital format, compared with just 7 percent on VHS, the trade paper reported. If the studio sells all 16 million copies, consumer spending worldwide, including rental, could reach close to $300 million, according to industry estimates. Box-office receipts for the movie, released in theaters last fall, have reached $160 million in the U.S. and $430 million worldwide, Variety reported.

As evidence of hefty demand for the DVD release, two of the studio's major retailers were placing re-orders by its second day on store shelves, according to several industry sources. The studio is believed to have initially shipped 8 million combined DVD and VHS units of "Die Another Day" to retailers nationwide, with an additional 8 million combined units destined for markets overseas. With the VHS version priced for rental, consumers have been snatching up two different DVD versions of the film (widescreen and full-screen) for about $20 each, according to an informal survey of national retailers. ...... reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=filmNews&storyID=2916503MGM Pushes New Bond DVD to Top of Charts June 12, 2003 01:57 AM ET By Brett Sporich LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Die Another Day," starring Pierce Brosnan, is believed to have sold about 5 million of its initial shipment of 8 million combined DVD and VHS units to consumers nationwide during its first week in release, according to several industry sources. The vast majority of those sales -- between 80%-90% -- represent DVD sales to consumers, the sources said. MGM Home Entertainment priced its latest Bond release for rental on VHS, encouraging consumers to purchase one of two different DVD skews of the film (widescreen or full-screen) for about $20 each. The actioner topped Nielsen VideoScan's weekly First Alert DVD sales chart by a wide margin and topped Video Store magazine's weekly rental chart during its debut week, which was the week ending June 8. "Die Another Day" earned an estimated $13.5 million in gross rental revenue during its first five days on rental shelves and leapt past sales of Warner Home Video's release of "The Animatrix" during the same frame, according to initial reports from VideoScan. ================================== They're off with the 13.5m estimate.
