I was 12 years old when I saw RS and was immediately mesmerized with Pierce Brosnan as Remington Steele. It appears now that the majority of RS fans are female... but I'm a red-blooded, heterosexual male.
I wasn't just an average fan... I lived and breathed RS.... and am really enjoying the DVD's now... twenty years later.
Are there any other males that felt this way or am I the only one?

Hi sherwin, good question and welcome to the board. You're not the only male that I've met that enjoys and loves Steele, though they don't seem to be a very vocal/active part of the current fandom. Maybe the vocal female majority of the fandom scares them off and overwhelms them a bit (kind of like the reverse of the Bond fandom). But there are some males registered here though most haven't posted (then again of the hundreds that read here, the hundred plus registered most don't post) . There are also men on the RS Steelewatchers Yahoo List where you'll find some more in depth discussion of Steele. I think it would be great to get more of the male perspective on Steele and Pierce.

Hi sherwin!
I think it's great men like Remington Steele as well. I don't see what would be wrong with that.
It looks like I might have to get an account with yahoo. I'd love to join the Steelewatchers list.

Yes, there are males at SteeleWatchers and other groups. Sometimes it's hard to tell; we were really surprised one day at chat (when I used to go to chats) when a recent regular named Ros turned out to be a guy - we didn't ask, he didn't say.
The first person to tell me he liked PB in RS was male - a former colleague. And there also was the late Michael Bledsoe, who can't speak up for himself anymore - he was a real, red-blooded, heterosexual male who was a true romantic at heart, loved RS for the romance aspect, and even wrote very good fanfiction.
By the was, isn't Xenos, who used to write excellent fanfiction stories, a male, too?
Sparkling, I don't think you need to have an account with Yahoo to join a group. Or do you? Many posters use other addresses, but maybe that's only true for old members.

I know several men who are fans of the series and will regularly pop in a DVD to have a "Steele" fix.
Xenos is a woman from Wisconsin named Cherie.

Yes Xenon is male and his fan fiction is fantastic. There's also a new member of the Yahoo RS list who posts wonderful fan vids names Anthony. Then there are other male long term members of the list like Wolfgang and of course there was Michael who we all still miss and there are others. They're rare but they're there. Sparkling, it never occurred to me that you needed to have a Yahoo account to post to the list. Maybe you do but you don't need to post from their e-mail. There's also the RS IMDB board where there's discussion and both boards (which have many posters in common) are currently doing Steele Of The Week where we discuss an episode, we're now doing Red Holt Steele and Altared starts Friday/Monday. Yes, Xenon, thank you. It wasn't even a typo; I couldn't remember his name.
I think these days one does have to have a Yahoo account to join a yahoo group; I might have heard something about it a while ago, I'm not sure.

Those who have mentioned the RS fanfic writers are on the money. The male practitioners have made up in quality what they have lacked in numbers.
Sherwin, speaking of male vs female, my husband, watching RS when it first aired, kept trying to pump up my enthusiasm. (Really.) Nudge, nudge "this show's an original, isn't it?" that sort of thing. You see, I was trying to play it as cool as a Hitchcock blonde because underneath I was, in a red-blooded female way, "immediately mesmerized" by Mr Steele, and trying my damnedest not to make this painfully obvious to my viewing partner -- not to stare jaw droppingly or hyperventilate whenever PB came on screen, or rush to turn on the ceiling fan. Thanks to my spouse's cheerleading I soon came around to opine in an offhand way that the show wasn't half bad at all. <large wink>
I think he liked the show, and still does, when I can get him to admit it, because Steele was very much in the mold of dangerously charming gents like his heroes John Steed or Simon Templar. He always allowed that PB, in his RS years, would have made a devil of a Saint and fit the Charteris character, in look and attitude, like a glove. I shouldn't forget that my husband was known to have a yen for SZ -- never more than in season one when he felt that her natural beauty and wit was brightest and her character was, on balance, more open and spontaneous. After that year his taste for her began to run a little hot and cold. He also enjoyed Murphy and Steele and their competitiveness and one-upmanship. That may be seen as a male pre-occupation or a "guy thing" but I love it as much if not more.
I have to say that after years of sufferance of my Brosnan obsession, no matter what he may really think of RS, my man's become a bit touchy on the subject. Nowadays he's more apt to say something like grumble grumble grumble PierceBrosnan again grumble grumblegrumble still too damned good looking grumble grumble grumble.
Well, that's just one male perspective and Sherwin, we do welcome yours and are glad to see that Pierce hasn't worn out his welcome with you. Now that you've made such a good impression just think of the bevy of female admirers you may acquire on this board and other majority female RS haunts!
I did have a look-in on some of the James Bond boards (as noted, mostly made up of males) when the RS DVDs revived interest. There was fair amount of kudos for the show among old and new viewers. Alas, some there who trade in backhanded compliments can seem a wee bit determined to use RS as "proof" that Pierce is a perennial lightweight who is only good in comedy - which goes to show that they weren't closely paying attention to his Steele or Bond, IMO.

I see absolutely no reason why a man can't be an honest to goodness Remington Steele fan. It's like being a male Bond fan. Don't they love that Bond gets all the women, is the hero of the world, and plays a mean game of baccarat? Bond looks good (according to your taste and who plays him) and he's had what seems like thousands of screen babes at his beck and call. Isn't Steele somewhat like this too? Cary Grant? Other screen idols? With RS, we also had Laura Holt, so not only did we dream about RS, we also dreamed about Laura. Men wanted to be like RS, women wanted him. Men wanted Laura and women wanted to be like her. PB is a great looking man and I think both men and woman are aware of the fact, albeit in different ways and for different reasons. Really, who wouldn't want to be suave and debonair and sexy, too? It carried Cary Grant for decades without any harm. I'd say the same for Clark Gable, but he never did a thing for me but give me nausea. Other women went wild over him. Welcome, Sherwin.

Myrtle, I could not have put it better than you did. Clark Gable does do some for me (especially in GWTW). As does Cary Grant. Personally I like Jimmy Stewart, but he doesn't have that much PB connection, does he? Sparkling, it never occurred to me that you needed to have a Yahoo account to post to the list. Maybe you do but you don't need to post from their e-mail. There's also the RS IMDB board where there's discussion and both boards (which have many posters in common) are currently doing Steele Of The Week where we discuss an episode, we're now doing Red Holt Steele and Altared starts Friday/Monday. When I applied for membership I had the choice between using my usual e-mail address and my newly created yahoo one. So I think you're right. I wasn't aware of this before, or I would have not created the new address. Ah, well. Thanks for pointing it out. I haven't been to any imdb board in a long time. The RS board seems interesting. I might pop in there now and then.
