Do any/most/all of you have your copies of Season 2? I'm enjoying mine, but it's good to see the episodes that I haven't seen in quite a while. As much as I like Steele Away With Me, it's fun to see others that were either Pax'd or left out completely. I had forgotten how some of them pushed the PG envelope and can see why Pax didn't want to run a couple of them. So glad the powers that be finally saw the light and put out the DVDs.

CG, what episodes/scenes in Season 2 do you think 'pushed the PG envelope"?

You would ask when I have 7,000 other things in my head. Not only that, but for reasons that are too long to go into, I've watched about half of season 2 but not straight through -- more like one here, two there. Let me clarify: it wasn't "graphic" scenes so much as what I believe they call "thematic elements." Even though RS and LH never did more than kiss, there are lots of other people doing a whole lot more than that, and frequently outside of marriage. Pax, which at least back then was promoted as a Christian television station of sorts, understandbly wouldn't be comfortable showing the eps where sleeping around outside of marriage was prominently featured. I'm not saying it was "too much" for TV, by any means, just that I could see why Pax wouldn't have wanted some of it. It's also rather interesting to look back and see a television series shot in the 80's with a rather pre-AIDS awareness approach to sex, too. All very accepted, no talk of "safety" as you sometimes see now. When I go back and watch all of it, in order, I'll be able to tell you what struck me in particular, but right now I can't. cg

CG,
So you're not talking about Remington and Laura "pusing the PG envelope", but rather the guest star characters - like Howie and Cookie in "St. Sweet on You." Still, compared to shows today, RS was quite innocent.

Well, as you know CG, I received my very own copy thanks to two Christmas Angels I know. I have only watched Steele Away With Me, Red Holt Steele and Steele Framed so far. Though technically I have also seen Altared Steele because I own it on PAL tape. I really got the Steele bug again though, and can't wait to watch more. The show gains so much when it's not dubbed.

In a somewhat similar vein, has anyone noticed that The "Family" Channel, which was originally somewhat family-friendly, now has some of the cruder stuff on it? No, we're not talking cable crude, but as funny as I think it is, I wouldn't put children of a certain age in front of Whose Line or a number of other movies/shows they broadcast. If a network wants to show those things, that's their choice, but to keep calling it the "family" channel is misleading, imho. I guess being a mother makes me more sensitive to that stuff. cg

I've never considered Steele a PG show. While it doesn't have any explicit language or sex that would even earn it a PG-13 in movies it was always a mature show. I'm not sure it even has the content to entertain most younger children anyway. Would they watch for the mysteries, the romance, the adult banter? If they are entertained then that's a fringe benefit but they're far from the target audience.
Frankly though most sexual innuendo and allusions go right over the heads of most children unless they already know what's being talked about -- and then well they already know so IMO it doesn't matter -- the horse has left the barn already.
As for PAX they ran much more risque stuff, not to mention far more violent stuff (which they censored far far less -- which I find weird) in other time slots.
While on Steele they rarely showed anything, even with guest stars there was always an adult sensibility about sexuality and relationships -- if only with the language and the writing. This is a show that aired at 9 and 10pm on network TV for most of it's run.

If I wasn't clear to begin with, I wasn't commenting that I thought the show inappropriate; it was that I could see why a Christian TV station (the infamous Pax) would take issue with some of the thematic material. It was perfectly fine for regular network television.
I agree that any stations concerned about sexual content of shows ought to be at least as concerned about violence.

I was re watching Season 2 and watching Red Holt Steele. Its so funny how I notice the most random things. I just realized in the whole emotional scene....Stephanie's not wearing pants. Or at least it doesn't look like it.

MeTV began airing RS this week and they began with the first episode of Season 2! I tuned in when they were running in the bull pen. I watched today's episode, Red Hot Steele, in its entirety. Really did enjoy it. Good to see Remington Steele back on the air.
