From what I've read, they had tense moments but did talk them out. The one that comes to mind is their conversation in the back of the limo about Stephanie being frustrated about him being really popular and he told her to get a publicist. I never knew that conversation took place at the back of the limo. I hardly consider it a tense moment. But like you said, sometimes tense words can be blown out of proportion. Besides, I think they never denied those moments, and in fact added a few more (like when Stephanie told they were shooting "Steele in the Chips" and every reporter was around Pierce, and Stephanie was a bit upset). I think that taken into consideration the amount of time they spent together, they've made a decent work of their relationship and now that they hardly see each other things seem to be just fine between them. I'd love to see them reunited in any kind of project. It'd be a dream come true!

Reading through all of these comments I think in the final assessment we can say that they probably did get on each other's nerves at some point (see Culp and Cosby before them, Anderson and Duchovny after), but they found a way to work through it and become at least decent acquaintances.
I do believe that after Cassandra Harris became mortally ill, whatever ill will there was between the co-stars ended, because his love for his wife was just that powerful. They do not pal around, by any means, but I know they have presented each other awards in the past, and continue to be cordial.

Oh, there's no deny that they got on each other's nerves from time to time, and that's probably one of the most common things in the tv industry. So many hours, so much work can degenerate any normal relationship. They probably got tired of seeing each other's faces for sooo long.
What I don't understand is why they didn't talk to each other. You can't be THAT tired of someone's face! Many close to the show (even Doris) have stated how they used their assistants to communicate. But at the same time, they have talked several times on the DVDs (both Stephanie and Pierce) about the personal chats they used to have. How Pierce told Stephanie that she should go out more on Friday nights, and some more I can't remember. Of course Pierce had denied they didn't get along but I probably he did it for the sake of the DVDs's release.
So, yeah, I'm not entirely sure their relationship was that deteriorated as all that "inside sources" and even Doris claimed it was. JMO.

I hadn't heard that Doris also said that the two didn't like each other. She actually said they didn't talk but used their assistance to communicate instead?

An interview on CNN in 2002 when Everybody Loves Raymond was still on transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0203/08/lkl.00.htmlKING: It's unusual that everybody gets along? ROBERTS: Absolutely. Not only gets along, but trusts each other, which is the most important point. Really, really. KING: So you can be a hit without that? ROBERTS: Well, I was on a show called "Remington Steele," where the other two didn't speak to each other. GARRETT: Doris, Doris, we're on television. ROBERTS: I know. By now, honey, that's a... (CROSSTALK) ROBERTS: ... but there's a lot of that, because there's a lot of envy. KING: So it can still work. ROBERTS: It can still work, but not the way it does here. That's what's so wonderful about it. I'm dead serious about it. It's fun to go to work. ======================================= I've heard the same second and third hand - that by the third season they only spoke out of scene via intermediaries, and other that "little" thing the show supposedly ran smoothly. As Pierce once said in TV Guide, years after Steele ended, there were tensions but if you believe everything you read they at least weren't rolling around on the floor trying to kill each other like on Moonlighting. ;D

And at least you couldn't tell on screen with PB and SZ.
I was never as interested in Moonlighting and knew there was tension there but didn't realize they really despised each other.

Well, many things to add here: Doris never said they didn't like each other, but there's only one reason to use your assistant to communicate with your costar, and I doubt is lack of time. I have never read that CNN interview. I've only watched that Emmy interview where she softened it a bit (in comparison to that CNN interview) saying that she tried to smooth things over but at the end she said: "the hell with you both". I'm sorry to say it but on that CNN interview she was waaay out of line. And did she ever imply that PB and SZ didn't trust each other? I don't think that was the case here. Envy, like she said, maybe. But lack of trust? Funny thing about Moonlighting is that they almost slept together at the beginning of the series. Cybill Shepherd said it many times. They maybe ended on worst terms than PB and SZ but at least they got together for a DVD joint interview. It was so nice to see them together after all these years. So it seems that whatever happened between PB and SZ that made them ignore each other off screen but give to the audience one of the most amazing chemistries ever on screen isn't as much "in the past" as they claimed it is.

Doris wasn't exactly revealing deep dark secrets. So when Brad Garrett is basically trying to tell Doris they're on TV and not just chatting behind the scenes so shhh she starts to say oh but it's all rather well known. It was also at the time of the interview 15 years in the past. And now it's 25 years ago. It's was like revealing that William Frawley and Vivian Vance (Fred and Ethel on I Love Lucy) couldn't stand each other. It's just part of TV history.
Even in the Season One interviews where everyone is bending over backward saying how wonderful everyone else was it's obvious from some comments made there was friction and jealousy arising from Pierce becoming the break out star even during the first season.
In 1999 PB & SZ had lunch together. It was set up by (RS make-up man) Bron Roylance who SZ apparently still e-mails regularly and who is Pierce's best friend. Seemingly they're never going to be friends, they're just too different as people, live very different lives and no longer work together but that doesn't mean they are still at odds or aren't friendly. SZ was interviewed for one of his Celebrity Profiles in 2000 or 2001 and had nothing but nice things to say, in the same way PB & SZ did for Doris's biography show (who both got on with during RS and after). Time moves on and so do people.
With the first RS DVD release there were again hard feelings but not directed at one another. SZ was rightfully pissed and hurt when she saw the Season One DVD cover which is why she did not participate in the DVD extras. But that was directed at FOX, not Pierce. FOX fixed it with Season Two and SZ then participated. Alas Pierce's interviews (and missing commentary) were all done during the Season One release so we didn't get any of them together but that's all FOX's fault.

I can't believe that after ALL these years we are still debating whether PB and SZ got along during RS. My two cents worth is that they were friendly during S1 and S2 and then the friendship went downhill. Don't know what happened but I remember seeing an awful lot of tension during S3. Regardless, it was a great show and I am glad that I was able to enjoy it when it originally aired.

Well, in fact we're 30 years late to debate everything relating to this show, mostly because, well, it all happened 30 years ago. I guess that's the beauty of a debate: to hear eveybody's opinions no matter how new or old they are. I also don't know what happened but I love hearing what everybody think it happened. Of course at this point we're not even discussing IF something happened because practically everybody adressed the issue. I'm sure that whatever happened is all in the past now and that makes me think that it was not such a terrible thing, but STILL I'd love to know exactly what it was.

I know I am a little late to come to the discussion but it is obvious that Pierce and Stephanie did not HATE each other. Sure, it could be tense but there was serious love in their relationship. They had amazing chemistry....and it was 100% genuine. They did have some words but the news blew it out of proportion and Doris did too. Pierce once said that he knew Stephanie was a little upset about the amount of recognition he got and while they were waiting for a shot in the back of the limo, they had a really deep, long conversation where they confessed things to each other and talked through their problems. They were great actors, no doubt, but even the best could not replicate the love that they shared that was so apparent on the screen. Take for instance Fred and Ethel on I Love Lucy. Vivian and William HATED each other. Kind of like the way they said Pierce and Stephie did but Vivian and William actually detested each other. It shows on the screen. I've noticed that Pierce has a hard time concealing his feelings on screen. When he was mad with Stephanie, he spoke in more of a bord monotone. His facial expressions said a lot. But when they worked things out, he seemed to genuinely love her and everything was genuine. He wanted to leave RS partially because the writers were scared of LH and RS "hopping in the sac". Pierce wanted their relationship to further. I know not everyone will agree but I specialize in the area of human relationships and psychology so here's my two sense I absolutely love this picture of them as well. They look very good together.

I know for a fact that Brosnan warned his fan club in the 80s not to have him on their cover pictured with Stephanie and Doris Roberts confirms how the two did not like each other in this video

I so love the interaction between the 2 of them. I agree that I believe that there were feelings between the both of them. The chemistry was undeniable and I don't believe they could be that good of an actor. Their tender scenes looked heartfelt and genuine.

I was 12 yes old when I first started watching RS. I looked forward to watching their love on TV. SZ made me want to be a strong female and of course PB was gorgeous. I can not see the 2 hating each other and I had never heard it before. I can understand if SZ was hurt by all the attention PB had gotten since SZ was an incredible actress.
Any insight into this relationship is welcome.
