Doris Roberts Eyes Mrs. Meers Role in Millie
Will Ray Romano's TV mom soon be on the Great White Way running New York City's Hotel Priscilla? Broadway.com has learned that multiple Emmy Award winner Doris Roberts is eyeing a run as the sinister Mrs.
Meers in Thoroughly Modern Millie.
Roberts made her Broadway debut in 1955 with The Desk Set, a production for which she also served as an assistant stage manager. In subsequent years, she has performed in many Broadway plays (including The Natural Look, Last of the Red Hot Lovers, The Secret
Affairs of Mildred Wild and Cheaters) and won an Outer Critics Circle Award for the Broadway comedy Bad Habits, but Roberts has never before seen on the Gotham stage in a musical.
The actress is now best known for her performance as Marie Barone in the CBS hit comedy Everybody Loves Raymond. She has earned three consecutive Emmy Awards for her supporting performance as Ray's ever-
present mother. Prior to those honors, she won an Emmy in 1983 for her guest-starring role on St. Elsewhere. Earlier this year, Roberts' memoir, Are You Hungry, Dear?, was published by St. Martin's Press.
Due to the filming schedule of Everybody Loves Raymond, Roberts will not be able to begin Millie performances right after current Mrs. Meers, Delta Burke, departs on February 15. It looks likely Roberts
would not start until at least late April.
Thoroughly Modern Millie currently stars Sutton Foster, Christian Borle, Angela Christian, Leslie Uggams, Kevin Earley and Burke. Like Burke, Foster will play her final performances on February 15, with Susan Egan taking over as Millie Dillmount on February 16.
A production spokesperson could not comment on the casting of Roberts.
