Screen icon Pierce Brosnan to make Maui Film Festival encore
WAILEA — Screen legend and environmental crusader Pierce Brosnan has joined the galaxy of stars to be honored by the 2017 Maui Film Festival at the Wailea Resort, festival founder and director Barry Rivers announced this morning.
Brosnan will accept the festival’s Pathfinder Award in a tribute June 23 at the Celestial Cinema on the Wailea Gold & Emerald Golf Course. Later that evening, the festival will screen the environmental documentary “Poisoning Paradise,” which Brosnan executive produced and his wife, Keely Shaye Brosnan, directed and produced with Teresa Tico.
“Pierce Brosnan is the only person ever to be honored twice by the Maui Film Festival,” Rivers said. “Once with the festival’s 2008 Maverick Award for his activism in protecting the Earth and all creatures who call it home, and this year with the Maui Film Festival’s 2017 Pathfinder Award for an eclectic and electrifying career that continues to shine a light on the human condition and its ability to rise above the challenges life presents.”
Brosnan, who owns a home on Kauai, may be best known around the world for his suave portrayals of British secret agent 007 James Bond in the ’90s, earning over a billion dollars for the action-film franchise between 1995 and 2002. But the Golden Globe-nominated Irish-American actor is a film producer, environmentalist, philanthropist and artist.
As an actor, his schedule has been packed lately: Starting in April, he starred in the AMC Western dramatic series “The Son” (which has its season finale on Saturday), and in August he will be on the big screen starring with Jeff Bridges and Kate Beckinsale in Marc Webb’s “The Only Living Boy in New York.” This fall, he will star with Jackie Chan in Martin Campbell’s action thriller “The Foreigner” and another action-thriller “Final Score,” directed by Scott Mann.
This summer, he will film “Medusa,” based on “The Wreck of the Medusa” by Jonathan Miles.
Last year, he starred in thrillers “I.T.” and “No Escape.” He produced and starred in the espionage thriller “The November Man” in 2015; and co-starred with Aaron Paul, Toni Collette and Imogen Poots in “A Long Way Down” and with Emma Thompson in “Love Punch” in 2014.
The debonaire Irishman, whose distinctions include being named the “Sexiest Man Alive,” is the embodiment of a leading man, often in fast-moving action thrillers. But he has also made fun of his image in comedies including “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “The Matador,” and even tackled the musical requirements of “Mamma Mia!” (with a sequel announced for 2018).
His other film credits, spanning a variety of genres and stretching back to 1990, include “Love Is All You Need,” “I Don’t Know How She Does It,” “Salvation Boulevard,” “Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” “The Ghost Writer,” “Remember Me,” “The Greatest,” “Married Life,” “Seraphim Falls,” “The Tailor of Panama,” “Grey Owl,” “Dante’s Peak,” “Mars Attacks,” “The Mirror Has Two Faces,” “The Lawnmower Man” and “Mr. Johnson.”
Brosnan follows three previously announced honorees for this year’s festival: Navigator Award recipient Connie Britton, Rising Star Karen Gillan and Shining Star Freida Pinto.
Featuring film screenings, luminary tributes, filmmaker panels, parties and food events, the festival runs June 21 to 25 in Wailea and at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. For more information, tickets and passes, visit www.mauifilmfestival.com.
