Getting to know the Brosnans
28/05/2013
CLAN REUNION: Tom Brosnahan indicates the picture of his father, Joseph Patrick Brosnahan, then aged 3, on the East Kerry Roots Festival programme cover.
Tom Brosnahan may soon outshine his more famous relative, Pierce Brosnan of James Bond fame.
Both will be at a Brosnan family gathering in Ireland from July 25 to July 28.
But Tom - his family kept the surname's original spelling - will be fronting a documentary covering the event for Irish television. So how did he get the jump on Pierce?
The Orewa resident doesn't know.
He is one of only two relatives chosen by organisers and producers to front the film and wonders if it is because his father, Joseph Patrick Brosnahan, is photographed as a child with other family on the festival programme cover. Or perhaps producers were intrigued by his Maori heritage.
His mother was "Waiwera" Violet Agnes Hawkins, of Ngati Pahauwera and Kahungunu descent, northern Hawke's Bay.
The crew from Tar Abhaile, meaning "home-coming", will be filming Tom in Orewa on June 8 and 9 for a programme on the East Kerry Roots Festival.
This year's event focuses on the clan gathering in East Kerry where the Brosnahan-Brosnan families have been prominent for centuries.
Brosnans from around the world will gather at Castleisland and surrounding villages for the four-day reunion, where a new clan chieftain will be announced.
The film crew will follow Tom and wife Nancy on their journey with about 15 other relatives from New Zealand, including two of his sisters.
Tom is excited about going, and just as excited that Orewa's attractions will feature in the film, expected to reach an audience of millions.
The Brosnahans intend staying on after the reunion to visit other parts of Britain and Europe.
The Kerrytown Brosnahans book about the family's New Zealand settlement, especially near Timaru, suggests the family name is Gaelic, from O'Brosnachain.
