www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i52a5818a20ffa0246d11a3e021727d9d'Percy Jackson' finds gods Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman join cast By Jay A. Fernandez and Borys Kit March 25, 2009, 02:27 PM ET Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Kevin McKidd and Melina Kanakaredes are heading to Mount Olympus. The quintet has been cast in Fox 2000's fantasy-adventure adaptation "Percy Jackson" as classical Greek gods Chiron (Brosnan), Medusa (Thurman), Zeus (Bean), Poseidon (McKidd) and Athena (Kanakaredes). Aries, Hades and Persephone have not yet been cast. The film, being directed by Chris Columbus, is shooting in Vancouver for a February release. Columbus and Craig Titley have adapted the screenplay from Rick Riordan's best-selling children's novel "The Lightning Thief." The Greek mythology-inflected book involves Poseidon's half-human son, Percy, who's on a quest across modern America to prevent a war among the gods. Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario and Brandon T. Jackson have already been cast as the book's lead teenagers. The all-star casting is reminiscent of the 1981 fantasy film "Clash of the Titans," which showcased Laurence Olivier as Zeus, Ursula Andress as Aphrodite, Claire Bloom as Hera and Jack Gwillim as Poseidon. "Lightning Thief" is the first of five novels about Percy Jackson and the Olympians -- the fifth, "The Last Olympian," is due in stores in May. The studio hopes to spin the books into a franchise in the "Harry Potter" mold. Columbus, Michael Barnathan and Karen Rosenfelt are producing the film. Mark Radcliffe and Greg Mooradian, Guy Oseary and Mark Morgan are executive producing. Carla Hacken is overseeing for Fox 2000. CAA reps Brosnan, Thurman and Bean. WMA reps McKidd. Gersh reps Kanakaredes. ========================================= Let's pray it's not another Clash of the Titans and hopefully FOX doesn't pull another Eragorn though these books are supposed to be better source material and Columbus is a solid director in this genre. Website for the books www.percyjackson.co.uk/They'd have to start shooting immediately for that Valentine's release date. Though the "gods"roles are most likely extended cameos in terms of shooting length. Chiron isn't even listed on the Who's Who page on the book site. Interestingly the authors physical description of the characters doesn't really fit the casting - especially Poseidon.

Book description
The Lightning Thief
The gods of Olympus are alive in the 21st Century. They still fall in love with mortals and have children who might become great heroes, but most of these children meet horrible fates at the hands of monsters by the age of twelve. Only a few learn the truth of their identity and make it to Half Blood Hill, a Long Island summer camp dedicated to training young demigods. Such is the revelation that launches young Percy Jackson on a quest to help his real father, Poseidon, avert a war among the gods. With the help of Grover the satyr and Annabeth the daughter of Athena, Percy must journey across the United States to catch a thief who has stolen the original weapon of mass destruction - Zeus’ master bolt. Along the way, they face a host of mythological enemies determined to stop them. Most of all, Percy must come to terms with a father he has never known, and an Oracle that has warned him of betrayal by a friend.

www.theoi.com/Georgikos/KentaurosKheiron.htmlKHEIRON (or Chiron) was the eldest and wisest of the Centaurs, a tribe of half-horse men. But unlike the rest of this tribe he was an immortal god, a son of the Titan Kronos and half-brother of Zeus. Kheiron's mother was the nymph Philyra who was coupling with Kronos when his wife suddenly appeared on the scene. To escape notice he transformed himself into a horse, and in this way sired a half-equine son. Some time later when a tribe of Kentauroi (or Centaurs) were spawned on Mount Pelion by the cloud nymph Nephele, Kheiron and his daughters took them into their care and raised them as their own. The Kentauros was a great teacher who mentored many of the great heroes of myth including Jason, Peleus, Asklepios, Aristaios and Akhilleus. Eventually, however, he passed away from the earth, after accidentally being wounded by Herakles with an arrow coated in Hydra-venom. The wound was incurable, and unbearably painfall, so Kheiron voluntarily relinquished his immortality and died. However, instead of being consigned to Haides, he was given a place amongst the stars by Zeus as the constellation Saggitarius or Centaurus. Kheiron's name was derived from the Greek word for hand (kheir), which also meant "skilled with the hands." The name was also closely associated in myth with kheirourgos or surgeon. In Athenian vase painting Kheiron was depicted with the full-body of a man, from head to foot, clothed in chiton and boots, with a horse-body attached to the human rump. The image probably reflected his appearance in Greek drama, where costume-limitations reduced his centaurine-form somewhat. By contrast the other Kentauroi, who do not appear in Athenian drama, were depicted unclothed with fully equine forms below the waist.

www.timescolonist.com/Premier+blockbuster+tour+film+studio+lacks+star+power/1531345/story.htmlB.C. Premier Gordon Campbell played himself up as a movie star at a Vancouver film studio Friday morning, handing out mock posters for his “action packed, job creating blockbuster” of a campaign and rehashing his party’s support of the province’s film industry. Campbell wandered through Mammoth Studios in Burnaby and toured the set of Percy Jackson, a in-production feature film starring Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman and Sean Bean. While he didn’t meet the cast, Campbell did step into a recreation of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, built on part of the studio’s 120,000 square foot stage, complete with foam bronze busts of Greek gods and faux marble columns. He was joined by Peter Leitch, president of the Motion Picture Production Association of B.C., who praised the Liberal government for helping the film industry grow. British Columbia, which has become the third-largest film production centre in North America, has benefited from more than $1 billion production in B.C. and 35,000 direct and indirect jobs, said Campbell. The provincial government claims motion picture production spending in B.C. totalled $1.2 billion in 2008, with the number of projects up almost 30 per cent to 260 from 202. Campbell said his government has increased film tax credits and eliminated expiry dates for credits to increase stability for future productions. That’s created a “level playing field” for B.C. film productions, he said. “The film industry is really a linchpin of the creative economy that is building across British Columbia,” Campbell said. “A number of television pilots have started here, a number of series have been made here, those all have made a difference to our province and they make a different to our economy.” “We’re going to continue to watch this industry grow, we’re going to continue to encourage this kind of activity in the province of British Columbia,” he added. More than 800 people were working on the Percy Jackson film set. Mammoth Studios have been the site of past productions such as X-Men 2, Night at the Museum, Elektra and I Robot. However, not everyone in the province is pleased with the provincial film policies. The Greater Victoria Film Commission has sharply criticized the province for its Distance Tax Credit, which is designed to encourage film production outside the Lower Mainland. However, Southern Vancouver Island has been lumped into the Lower Mainland under the program and is not eligible for the tax credit, which the commission has called unfair. Capital Region film business has fallen to $7.3 million in 2008 from $28 million in 2005. Campbell made no promises Friday about changes for Greater Victoria. “I don’t really think you can argue that Victoria is remote,” he said. “I think you can, and we’d be glad to listen to them say, look here are the extra challenges that people have. We’ve said our principle is we want a level playing field.” “Victoria may have some additional challenges, but they are not a remote community. What they have is a challenge, for example, with the movement of equipment or materials across with the ferry process. We’d be glad to look at those things. “But you can’t claim that Victoria is a Smithers or a Vanderhoof, they’re not. So we want to make sure we encourage the film industry to go to locations all over the province.” Leitch said his provincial motion picture association is glad government is looking into Victoria’s concerns, but added that film production can be “cyclical” and “there are a whole bunch of factors that determine which locations films go to.” Campbell closed the tour by signing autographs of his mock action film/campaign poster for members of the media and film production crews. The premier carried a live microphone feed with him as he toured the studio. As he was handing out a poster to Natale Bosa, owner of the studio, the microphone caught Bosa’s remarks. “What the hell is this?” Bosa said, adding, “Did my tax dollars pay for this?” The Liberals were quick to tell reporters public tax dollars were not used to create the posters, which cost less than $2 each. “This production will begin May 13, hopefully,” he said. Campbell is spending the rest of Friday doing local media interviews, before attending the Countdown to Shanghai Expo 2010 in downtown Vancouver.

www.bclocalnews.com/tri_city_maple_ridge/mapleridgenews/news/44561317.htmlGreek demi-gods battle in GE Park By Phil Melnychuk - Maple Ridge News Published: May 07, 2009 4:00 PM Updated: May 07, 2009 4:27 PM Within the depths of Golden Ears Provincial Park, within four campsites where families usually spend their summer, the ancient Greek world is being reborn. It’s being fashioned through the work of dozens of trades people and set designers putting together the set for a feature film that will have echoes of Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings and stars Pierce Brosnan and Uma Thurman. The movie, still to be titled, will be based on the best selling book, The Lightning Thief: Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which tells the story of 12 mythological beings who still live in the 21st century, New York, in particular. “It’s a fantasy adventure,” says Ernie Malik, publicist for 20th Century Fox. “This film takes the premise of Greek gods of mythology and puts it into the contemporary world.” There’s also a human, or half-human, half-god character named Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon. Percy is suspected by Zeus of stealing his lightning bolt and Percy has to prove his innocence by finding the real thief. That promises lots of action, much of which will be filmed at Camp Half Blood, the location being created in Golden Ears. The movie is directed by Chris Columbus, who remembered Golden Ears from when he previously produced I Love You, Beth Cooper. Columbus also produced the three Harry Potter movies and wrote the 1980s films Reckless, Gremlins, and The Goonies. Malik said author of the book, Rick Riodan, has written five Percy Jackson books. If the first works out as a movie, others could follow. “That’s the idea, is this could turn into a five-picture franchise for 20th Century Fox,” Malik said. He added that the movie follows in the same vein as the Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia. Malik said shooting should be finished by the second week of June at the latest and work in the Vancouver area complete about a month later. About 200 crew are usually on site. “There are a couple days up there when we’ll have several hundred extras working as well.” Tom Blackbird, area supervisor for B.C. Parks, said the movie company has paid for a park use permit and pointed out it’s filming in a closed area of the park that’s not open until July anyways, so there’s no impact on public use. “It’s a major feature film. This is one of the biggest ones that have been in the park for a while.” Release date is Feb. 12, 2010, when the Vancouver-Whistler Winter Olympics begin. Blackbird said shooting for the movie Twilight took place in the park a few weeks ago.

rickriordan.blogspot.com/Friday, May 08, 2009 The Movie Set and More Yesterday was quite a tour de force. After my morning media interviews, a driver from the studio picked me up and took me to the production offices for the Percy Jackson movie. The studio, I’m told, used to be a distribution warehouse for Sears before it was repurposed, and the place is massive. I can’t give away any details about the project, so I’ll have to be careful what I say, but the first thing that struck me was how many people it takes to create a movie. I thought writing a book was hard! Hundreds and hundreds of people are putting in thousands of work hours bringing Percy Jackson to the big screen. We met set designers, prop workers, costume designers, video engineers – the list goes on and on. The concept art they showed us was just amazing, but nothing compared to the real sets. I saw everything from the Met Museum to the palace of Hades. The props are also meticulously crafted. I held Percy’s sword Riptide, and it is exactly like I imagined it. As I walked through the offices, people kept coming up to me with books to sign for their children. That’s the other thing that struck me: How many Percy fans are working on this project. So many of them have children who’ve read the books. The enthusiasm level is very high, and it felt like everyone was committed to seeing the project done well. In the late afternoon, we drove over to our event for Kidsbooks. They’d reserved a school auditorium for the night, and the place was packed to capacity, even though the Canucks were playing that night, which was stiff competition. Some people had driven 2-3 hours to attend the event. I met librarians, home-schoolers, entire classes who’d come with their teachers – really a great crowd. They were excited to learn the movie was filming right in their city, and in fact some of the kids said, “My dad did the sets for that!” or “My mom is working on the costumes!” Pretty staggering how one movie can bring so many people into the process. I signed books for about two hours. My favorite comment came from a boy named Mac, who was toward the end of my line. He slumped across the table and sighed. “If I see one more god-crazed little kid,” he announced, “I’m gonna blow it!” LOL. My day was only starting, though. Our driver took us out to the set to watch the movie being filmed. They are doing nighttime outdoor scenes at the moment, so the filming was in a huge forested park north of the city, and the crew is working only during the hours of dark, which means from 9PM-5AM. We arrived at the trailer lot, which is set up behind an abandoned school. Sounds like a Percy Jackson scene already, doesn’t it? First stop: the costume trailer, because I was not equipped for the extremely muddy, cold conditions out in the woods. I borrowed galoshes and a coat, and also got to see racks and racks of all the costumes labeled: Grover’s wardrobe, Luke’s armor, Percy’s school clothes, Annabeth’s jacket – it was pretty surreal. We then drove into the woods to the set through several security roadblocks. More rows of trailers and tents: portable cafes where you could get pretty much any food you can imagine (they don’t take lunch breaks, so food is delivered to the set constantly), costume repair shops, production trailers, trailers for the actors, etc., etc. The actual set was down in a valley with huge trees. Hundreds of extras in Greek armor with red and blue-plumed helmets milled around an enormous campfire, and battle standards for the cabins were flying. It very much felt like I had walked straight into Camp Half-Blood. We stood in the director’s pavilion and watched a few takes of a scene. I got to talk with Chris Columbus and meet Logan Lerman (Percy) and Alex Daddario (Annabeth). They all seemed genuinely energized about the whole project and said everything was going well. We didn’t stay long enough to meet Pierce Brosnan or Catherine Keener, who were coming later to the set. That would’ve been a thrill, of course, but we’d had an incredibly long day and I was ready to crash. We headed back into the city and I slept very well, but all too briefly. (If you'd like to learn more about the movie in progress, here's an article from a local Vancouver newspaper.)

Pierce Brosnan saved Uma Thurman from a runaway minivan. The Irish actor, who was on location filming new movie 'Percy Jackson', spotted the out-of-control vehicle speeding down a hill straight towards his blonde co-star. A source said: 'No one was aboard the runaway van as it barrelled towards a grassy area where Uma was relaxing with cast and crew. Pierce yelled, 'Get out of the way!' 'He raced after the van, wrenched open the driver's side door, jumped in and slammed on the brakes.' Before the actor - who played iconic British spy James Bond in four movies - managed to stop the vehicle, it hit a curb and crashed into rubbish bins - sending cast and crew running in all directions to avoid the collision. The source added: 'Everyone scattered out of harm's way. Pierce got kudos and hero 007 jokes from Uma. The transportation crew were in trouble for not setting the van's emergency brake.'

www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_ezine&task=read&page=1&category=2&article=7085Chris Columbus says I LOVE YOU, BETH COOPER Written by Christina Radish Monday, 29 June 2009 Best known for directing the first two Harry Potter films (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), and for writing such classics as Gremlins and Goonies, Chris Columbus is currently filming the fantasy-adventure Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lighting Thief, based on the best-selling novel about a New York kid who learns that he is the half-blood offspring of one of the Greek gods. At the Beth Cooper press day, Chris Columbus talked about how much he loved directing a smaller budget film again, and his excitement for the February 2010 release of the CGI-filled, big-budget Percy Jackson. Excerpts Q: What can you say about Percy Jackson? Chris: We have a tremendous cast. We just finished shooting Uma Thurman as Medusa, with Pierce Brosnan as Chiron. And, this kid from 3:10 to Yuma, Logan Lerman is Percy Jackson. I believe he’s going to be one of the great leading men. I really do. I don’t say that often, but I think he’s really an amazing kid. He’s got a sense of reality about him and a sense of real intensity that I haven’t seen in many 17-year-olds. Q: What interested you in that project? Chris: I’m like a little kid, really. I love to see movies where I haven’t seen things before, and I haven’t seen the world of Greek mythology done really well, on screen. It’s always those cheesy stop-motion monsters, so I really wanted to do them in a much more interesting way. Q: How are you achieving that? Chris: Really fine CGI work. We have Uma Thurman playing Medusa, but she’s wearing those things on her head. We’re putting several snakes in her hair that move, and move with the performance. It’s really interesting. Q: Are you staying true to the books, to set it up for sequels? Chris: Yeah, but there’s a bit of a sense of liberation with Percy Jackson because we’re changing the books. I wouldn’t say significantly, but we’re able to change them a little bit. Q: Are you worried that will upset fans of the books? Chris: I’m not worried. I think they’ll be excited. I’m really excited about the movie. I think we’ve made some of the right choices. A couple of the other books are going to be a bigger challenge, but I think they’ll be real happy with this one. Q: Will you be involved with further films? Chris: I hope so. We have a good cast and I love this world. It’s really exciting. Q: Do you still regret not having done more Harry Potter films? Chris: No, I don’t have any regrets. The only regret I have is mostly emotional. I see those kids on screen and it’s like seeing part of your family on screen. They’re aging before my eyes. And, you see all the sets that we built and all the actors that we cast, and it’s very surreal because it’s an entire world that I put together, yet I’m not part of anymore. So, that part of it is a little melancholy, but I don’t want to go back. Not now. Q: What do you think of the latest movies? Chris: I like them all. I really do. I really like Goblet of Fire a lot. I haven’t seen the new one yet. It was weird to see them because it was like we had set into pattern how those seven movies were going to be made, with the exception of the seventh book being split into two movies. We talked about splitting the fourth book into two movies because the fourth book was huge in length. My initial shock was, “Oh, my God, Tom Felton looks so old,” or “The kids are so good now.” Q: Has Percy Jackson got any similarities at all? Chris: The book does, so we’ve tried to remove those similarities. Q: Do you have a favorite kind of film to make? Chris: I honestly just want to try different types of films. We’re in a very scary situation right now because we’re in an economic disaster area, and yet movies are doing okay, but it’s these gigantic movies, like Transformers. Are those small movies going to continue to get made? That’s what we have to hope for. ***** Q: What are you doing after Percy Jackson? Chris: I have no idea. We have to get Percy Jackson out by February of next year. Q: Will you take Percy Jackson to Comic-Con? Chris: I’d love to, but Comic-Con is in July and we don’t have our visual effects finished. When people see the visual effects, I want them to really be blown away by them and they’re not complete yet. They’re just not ready to show. Q: What studio is that? Chris: It’s Fox. Q: Is that your home studio? Chris: Now. It used to be Warner Bros, but now it’s Fox. We’ll see. They’ve been good, though.

My son is really excited about the movie (and the fact that I'm going to watch that one with him - now that kids are big enough to be taken to the theater and left there, I have the luxury of chosing which movies we watch and which ones we don't.) He liked the books, which nicely coincided with him learning Ancsient Greece and all about the Greek gods last year at school. I'm afraid I'm going to have to listen to the last 3... Not that I disliked them, they were OK, but a bit off for my age - better than Narnia, not as good as Potters - and I do have other books I want to read.

scifiwire.com/2009/06/percy-jackson-faces-a-cla.phpPercy Jackson faces a Clash of Greek myth movies: Who will prevail?Chris Columbus is directing a film adaptation of Rick Riordan's first Percy Jackson & the Olympians novel, The Lightning Thief, a 21st-century take on Greek mythology. But Columbus said that he isn't worried that Warner Brothers is making its own Greek-inspired movie, a remake of Clash of the Titans. "No, because we're first," Columbus said in an exclusive interview Saturday in Santa Monica, Calif., where he was promoting I Love You, Beth Cooper. Titans, starring Sam Worthington, hits theaters in March of 2010, but 20th Century Fox locked in a February 2010 release date for Columbus' film. Was it a calculated decision? "Oh, yeah," Columbus said. In Columbus' movie, Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) is a boarding school kid sent to Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods. From there he has adventures with gods and creatures of Greek myth in the present day. This is not a spoof, mind you: Columbus takes his gods very seriously. "Percy Jackson's a very serious movie," Columbus said. "It's comedic, but it's only comedic in a way that an Indiana Jones movie can be comedic. So I think in terms of comparing it to something like Clash of the Titans, it is more of an Indiana Jones-meets-Greek-mythology [movie], as opposed to a pure period-piece Greek myth, Clash of the Titans." Columbus has taken some liberties with the source material: Maybe not every sequence from the book is in the movie, but maybe he came up with some better ideas. "Just some of the creatures have been changed," Columbus said. "We have sort of a breathtaking hydra sequence that replaces a sequence that used to take place at the [St. Louis] Arch. Our version of Hades is a little different. There are other changes here and there. Camp Half-Blood is a lot more dangerous, a lot more serious than it was in the book." Columbus has also cast Uma Thurman as Medusa. On the set, Thurman wore a blue skullcap painted with dots for computer-graphics artists to add her hair of snakes in post-production. Otherwise, this Medusa is as hot as Uma Thurman. "Well, Medusa has to be extremely seductive so she can get people to open their eyes and look into her eyes," Columbus said. "So she is a combination of one of the most frightening creatures I've ever seen on screen yet with a very seductive voice." Fox plans to release Percy Jackson & The Olympians in theaters on Feb. 12, 2010.
