Pierce being a very good tennis fan and giving headline writers cheezy Bond hooks. ;)

WIMBLEDON: Nadal has licence to thrill as Berdych is blasted

RAFAEL NADAL swept aside seventh seed Tomas Berdych with an awesome display of power and precision that drew gasps of admiration from James Bond to reach the semi-finals.

The world No.2 was the last player to get past the third round on this wettest of Wimbledons, but he became the first to reach the last four after surging to a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 6-2 win over the seventh-seeded Czech.

After taking five sets to beat his two previous opponents, Nadal will be relieved to get the chance to put his feet up ahead of tomorrow's semi-final against Marcus Baghtatis or Novak Djokovic.

Berdych had been expected to be a dangerous opponent, having beaten Nadal in three of their previous five meetings.

But, having mastered the young Czech twice on clay, Nadal demonstrated his growing confidence on grass.

"It was very tough out there with the wind, but I played very good tennis," he said.

"In the end, I'm very happy with the victory."

Nadal, who claimed he had played his best match on grass when coming from two sets down to beat Mikhail Youzhny in the previous round, dropped his serve for the only time in a close-fought first set.

But he grew with every rally and Berdych paid for crucial lapses of concentration at the start of the second and third sets in which he dropped his serve.

Centre Court was less than half-full when the players came out, with Pierce Brosnan casting a lonely figure in the Royal Box, and the late risers missed plenty of action, with six break points in the first three games.

Nadal had to save two break points in his opening game, which spanned nine minutes, and both men then dropped their serve as they struggled to cope with the swirling wind.

Berdych had another chance to break in the seventh, but they grew more confident on their serve and it was no surprise when it went to a tie-break.

Nadal, last year's runner-up, never faced any serious challenges after that. He broke the Czech in the opening games of the second and third sets and had his first match point on Berdych's serve at 5-1 in the third, but was beaten with an ace.

Nadal wasted another in the next game, but won when Berdych's forehand hit the net.

I was kind of hoping that they would report that PB, stunning in orange trainers and bright argyle socks, was looking on from the Royal Box -- but since the wind was already causing Nadal to drop serve, perhaps another distraction might have been fatal.<wink>

LOL! For some reason I think the socks might no longer be in his wardrobe. Pity. :D

He was also there with Keely (so not so lonely). She might not have let him out the door in that. ;)

From Sports Illustrated:

WIMBLEDON, England -- Five things we learned during a memorable day of tennis on Friday:

2. Even Justine Henin can succumb to nerves. For a player competing in her first Grand Slam semifinal, Bartoli -- inspired by Pierce Brosnan; hey, who isn't? -- played remarkably. She overcame a shaky first set and simply declined to miss a ball for the next 90 minutes or so. If ever there were a time to get into the "Zone," that blissful interval athletes dream about entering, this was it.

============================================================

FOX Sports: Secret agent inspires Bartoli

From Steve Griffiths in London
July 07, 2007

MARION Bartoli is within touching distance of a fairytale triumph at Wimbledon after she stunned world No.1 Justine Henin, but her toughest challenge is still to come.

The No.18 seed, from France, produced one of the biggest surprises in the history of the All England Club as she came back from a set down overnight to beat Henin 1-6 7-5 6-1 and set up a final showdown with triple champion Venus Williams on Saturday.

Bartoli's cool under duress was remarkable, but she put it all down to the presence of a former James Bond.

Pierce Brosnan, who played the secret agent, was watching the match and Bartoli was inspired by the presence of the actor.

"I was so stressed in the first set because it was my first time on Centre Court, but then I saw Pierce Brosnan watching and he is one of my favourite actors," she said.

"So I just started to play some good tennis for him.

"I hope he comes back on Saturday to bring me some more luck."

Henin looked odds-on to breeze into the final when she took the first set in just 22 minutes, but Bartoli gave the performance of a lifetime as she overwhelmed the Belgian with increasingly powerful and precise groundstrokes.

Bartoli had already beaten Serbian Jelena Jankovic, the No.3 seed, in the fourth round, but she easily surpassed that triumph by knocking out the French Open champion to reach her first grand slam final.

The 22 year old had never been past the fourth round of a Major before but, after initially looking nervous, she rose to the occasion on Centre Court in sensational style.

Beating Henin would have seemed difficult for Bartoli, but facing Williams could be an even more daunting proposition.

Williams gave a breathtaking display as she brushed aside Ana Ivanovic, the No.6 seed from Serbia, to make it to a grand slam final for the first time since winning Wimbledon in 2005.

The American is playing at the kind of level that made her the most feared player on the WTA Tour in the early part of the decade.

She destroyed Maria Sharapova in the fourth round, tormented Svetlana Kuznetsova in the last eight and could easily overwhelm Bartoli is the Frenchwoman cannot repeat her sterling effort against Henin.

Bartoli will at least go into the match with her confidence sky high after battling back to oust Henin.

She was initially out-classed as Henin cleverly moved her around the court in the first set.

She started to find some rhythm on her groundstrokes in the second set and got the decisive break in the 12th game to take the match to a decider.

Suddenly Henin was being to show signs of losing her composure.

Bartoli was playing every point as if it were her last and, throwing caution to the wind, she hit Henin off court.

She took the first five games of the set as Henin staggered towards an embarrassing exit.

When Bartoli got the chance to serve for the match, she could have let the situation get the better of her, but she closed it out in impressive fashion.

Williams had a far easier task as she turned on the style against Ivanovic to secure her sixth Wimbledon final appearance.

Although she was seeded No.23 because of her part-time presence on the WTA Tour, Williams made a mockery of the difference in rankings with a clinical 6-2 6-4 victory.

"I felt like I played really well in the first set," said the 27-year-old who will be chasing her sixth career grand slam title.

"I didn't give her many chances but she stayed right in there and was a tough competitor. This will be my sixth final here and I'm really excited."

Or maybe not. :D :D :D

Daily Mail

The Man with the Golden Racket needed the help of a special agent on Centre Court against Juan Carlos Ferrero yesterday.

To say that Roger Federer was floundering, having lost the second set, would be a tad dismissive of the Swiss Meister's capacity for extricating himself from tricky situations. But there was no denying the timing or the source of the transformation which carried him into a fifth successive Wimbledon semi-final.

Scroll down to read more:

On serve, early in the third set, Federer was being matched by the dogged Ferrero, whose cat-like scampering around the court was allied to groundstrokes that were the basis of his French Open triumph four years ago. For the first time this fortnight, inspiration was lacking in the world No 1.

Enter, stage right, Pierce Brosnan returning to his seat in the Royal Box. In a trice, Federer reverted to James Bond mode, used his licence to thrill and swatted away the baddie on the other side of the net with ridiculous ease.

He had been clearly shaken but not stirred. Less than an hour later a 7-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory was his and he was on his way out of the All England Club by the time his prospective semi-final opponents, Andy Roddick and Richard Gasquet, were walking on to No 1 Court to begin their match.

It was nothing less than we should expect from a superhero.

With his suave delivery and selfassurance, the four-time Wimbledon champion was every bit as smooth as he defended his employers, er, hosts, the All England Club, against the criticism from other players, including arch rival Rafael Nadal, that play should have gone ahead last Sunday because of the rain.

Federer said: "I don't think it's really the right way to go after the tournament. Wimbledon has raised prize money. They're building a new roof over Centre Court. They built the Millennium Building in 2000. We're not upset when they do those things. When it rains once and we have a scheduling problem, I don't think we should start going after the club right away. I disagree with what the players said."

Never someone afraid to stand apart, James Bond could not have put it better.

So is there an anti-hero out there who can prevent the Swiss star equalling Bjorn Borg's record of five successive Wimbledon triumphs in front of the Swede tomorrow afternoon?

There is certainly no one who can match the relaxed preparation that Federer enjoyed while all around were waiting for the rain clouds to clear since last Friday.

Typically untroubled by the elements which affected lesser mortals, a light cold notwithstanding, Roger's week had been a serene stroll through some of life's gentler activities.

"I was waiting like all the other guys but instead of being in the locker room, I was at home which was a bit more cosy. I went to the city once or twice. Went to the hairdresser. Watched movies. Played cards. Hung out. My mum went home to Switzerland after the Safin match and came back on Wednesday. She didn't miss a thing."

Even James Bond's mum isn't that cool.

Having been stranded at 5-5, 40-40 overnight, Federer eased his way to a tiebreak and kept the ball in play while Ferrero struggled to find his range. Normal service resumed, we thought.

Not so. The Spaniard played his role to perfection, foiling our hero at every turn while the 15,000 spectators slapped on their shades and sun hats. Suddenly, the strawberries and suncream pre-Wimbledon motif to this year's Championships did not seem quite so absurd.

Out of nowhere Ferrero levelled the match, serving more forcefully than he does on clay and surprising Federer with the tactic.

Something had to be done. Enter 007 in the Royal Box and his alter ego with the Nike headband on the court. Suddenly, Ferrero was swamped with shots fizzing at him from every which way.

The Swiss Meister unleashed the secret gadget which Q had furnished him for just such a difficult occasion — an imperious backhand that struck winner after winner past his tottering opponent.

For comic relief, Federer fluffed a serve so ridiculously at set point that the ball floated on the wind and plopped down close to the baseline. Only Ferrero, the fall guy, wasn't laughing.

A final, wickedly sliced backhand on to the sideline and a whipped forehand pass and the baddie was beaten.

Pierce Brosnan rose in admiration. It takes a superhero to recognise one.

Pierce cannot stay away from Wimbledon. He was there yesterday (I think) for the Men's Final. New photos from Splash.

First the sneakers, now the pants. Someone's feeling sartorially adventurous lately. As long as he doesn't wear them together, it's all good. ;)

Popsugar: It's a Party, A Summer Serpentine Party
Thu, 07/12/2007 - 12:45pm by Molly

Yesterday evening's Serpentine Gallery Summer Party 2007 in London brought out some beautiful faces and gorgeous summer dresses. Thandie looked especially pretty, but then again, she always does. I always adore seeing Josh/Pacey and his ever-fabulous girlfriend, Diane Kruger. Plus, who doesn't love seeing Pierce Brosnan? No one! No one doesn't love Pierce! I wonder if Kim Cattrall leaked any more info on that Sex and the City movie, because that's something she could talk my ear off about with no complaints. Don't you just love seeing such Summer-y parties? Makes me want to throw on a white dress and get outdoors.

The pants are fairly muted, actually, and the leather jacket and shoes pull the whole look together. IMO, no need to call in the fashion police.

I have to admit that seeing the word "serpentine" (above) always causes me to free-associate about the movie, "The In-Laws." Can anyone easily forget Peter Falk, (in my favorite of his movie roles) as a squirrely CIA spook with an extremely charmed life, telling frightened orthodontist Alan Arkin how to avoid heavy gunfire by making random zig-zag movements? "Serpentine, Sheldon! Serpentine!"

Right.

Of course, that film is the happy inspiration for the RS episode "Signed, Steeled, and Delivered" with another nerdy Sheldon character drawn unwillingly from his boring, but quiet life, into the mayhem side of the spy business. And the "Danang, the rainy season" double-speak would also fit right in, LOL!

Oh, I'm not complaining or calling the Fashion Police. I like it very much -- but for him lately it is adventurous. 8-)

LOL on The-In-Laws -- one of the all time great comedies (shame about the remake) but I never connected Sheldon and "Danang, the rainy season" with it though it fits perfectly.

Yeah? You never made the connection? Sheldon Kornpett / Sheldon Quarry? The CIA?

OK, maybe it would've helped if they'd had some conversation over Laura's dinner table about giant tsetse flies or the Guacamole Act of 1917. Or had Sheldon yell when they blow up the car, "My car has flames!"

Style.com: Splendor in the Grass - The Lowdown on London's Big Summer Fête

The annual Serpentine Gallery party to open its summer pavilion (always a temporary structure by a guest architect) had everything this year—sponsorship by Swarovski, extra-glittery guests, chandeliers, dancing in the park—except one tiny detail. Somehow, the pavilion itself had gone AWOL. In the run-up to London's biggest summer bash, it became clear that Olafur Eliasson's structure wasn't going to be ready in time for its inauguration. With social disaster looming, Zaha Hadid stepped in at the eleventh hour and built four glowing mushroom parasols to shelter the dance floor. "They're steel structures covered in fabric. Did it in four weeks," she said. To say that Nadja Swarovski was visibly relieved is an understatement. "Zaha rocks! She saved the day. What an example of creative problem solving," she said.

And happily, Rod Stewart, Pierce Brosnan, Tracey Emin, and Geri Halliwell, among other guests drawn from the farthest-flung poles of London/L.A./Euro society, seemed to be having too good a time to notice the absence of Eliasson's pavilion. Practically all of the city's young designer community showed up— Christopher and Tammy Kane, Jonathan Saunders, Richard Nicoll, and Hussein Chalayan included. Giles Deacon chatted with Thandie Newton about his flash visit to L.A. with his pre-collection; Sophia Kokosalaki and Liz Goldwyn arrived, both in Kokosalaki's bright draped dresses and the latter accessorized in Van Cleef & Arpels; and Stefano Pilati, in town to film a 24-hour shoot for his new Edition 24 collection, which will be live-streamed on www.showstudio.com this weekend, came with Camilla Nickerson, who was in a short YSL tux dress. Also tuxed was Phoebe Philo, just four weeks after giving birth to her son, Marlowe, who, she said, was named after the dark Renaissance playwright. And Cameron Silver of Decades dropped by with Clare Waight Keller of Pringle—he was sporting a bespoke suit and she was in a vintage Dior coat snapped up that day at Alfies Antique Market.

This being London (and a garden party with the threat of rain a constant), there was no discernible dress code, except, of course, for the Swarovski-tribute glitter—lots of it supplied by the crystal accessories that Kane, Saunders, and co. have designed for the house. Ironically, it was all lent out before the party-giver could grab a piece for herself. She had to resort to diamonds by London rock-meister Stephen Webster.
